I got a tweet from Friends of Blackwater...

Bird Friendly coffee now available along Florida's turnpike

Followed the link... which came from the National Zoo...

Followed the link embedded there ...

Then poked around and found this page

We are featuring The Red Knot on one of our coffee blends, in hopes of building awareness and gaining support for the Delaware Bird-A-Thon...

Never know what you're going to find out there  gum

This was posted to the CMNH forum by BIG FRANK:

"My raptor watch is along the shoreline in Toronto. If these guys migrate there is a good chance they will go by my site. I will be keeping a good eye out for the antena/tracking device. Saw 73 Peregrine's pass the park last season. So far have seen 6 this August. Migration is just getting underway. Fingers crossed we'll see Quest."

Funny-I saw that and was just preparing a capture of her map...she was right outside the park where he watches (Rosetta McClain Gardens) on August 4...

As a matter of fact, The Things They Carried was the summer reading assignment a few years ago for our incoming freshman class at The College at Brockport (a unit of the State University of New York, where I work).  The freshmen are detailed to read the book before they come to college, and there are various class activities and assignments built around it.  The idea is to build civic awareness and engagement, and to foster discussion of topics raised in the book.  It's part of the "American Democracy Project," and has been very successful in raising the consciousness of our new students.  It's really a great program.

I saw that it's required reading at many schools, yet I'd never heard of it before today.  I have many, many memories from that time...I'm definitely adding it to my next book shopping trip.

Could not get the sound to work, Ei, but I read the piece. Yes, a Driveway Moment. Another piece from that sad time - one I had never heard of but which the younger ones knew - was a story that was read in full on NPR last Memorial Day - called "The Things they Carried'. I never moved for an hour.

I found this story by that name...looks like a book I might like to read...

I heard the first part of this story last evening on NPR and the second part this morning-one more to go (missed when it's scheduled)... All things Considered part 1 Morning Edition part 2...

One of those stories where you can't get out of the car until it's done, kleenex in hand...

One of the blogs I frequent, TYWKIWDBI, shared 2 interesting videos today.  One is a Monarch Butterfly roost  and the other is a compilation of old films set to Aaron Copland's The Promise of Living

I happened to have both playing at the same time...the music is quite lovely with the mostly silent butterflies.

Inquiring minds want to know...does she look like Mariah or Kaver or both?
Any pictures of the overall scene so we can imagine we see 2 falcon shaped specs?

She was too far away to get a good look at her. She appeared to have a light breast like Mariah's, but not as white as Kaver's.

Google Maps Street View will give you the overall scene.

Oh well!  At least we know she's healthy & well & looks like she's settling down!
12223  Rochester Falcons / Satellite Tracking / Re: Our Quest for Quest! A Success! - Saturday, August 28, 2010 on: 30-Aug-10, 10:52:32 AM

About an hour later, while talking to a couple of cyclists, we noticed a 2nd falcon perched just below and to the right of the male. Going by size, it was a female, and it also had a full crop. It was facing us so we could not see her back.

Conclusion: the female is Quest.

Thank you all for finding her!   yippee

how about Hurricane?  he was hatched at the Sheraton in  Toronto, too
Hear he may be a first time dad this year 2thumbsup
jeanne--thanks for the info on hurricane----it makes perfect sense that
he'd be the son of wind  and windwhistler----who else is he related to him ? do you know?
(maybe a great great grandpa named tornado, ha ha) thumbsup

I don't know all that much about the Toronto family trees, but I believe Tiago-Rhea Mae's mate-is the son of Windwhistler and Mandy when he was the tiercel at the Sheraton and King Street nests at the same time.
