I knew this was going to happen...Archer's already having a tough time keeping the eggs under him and he only has 3 to deal with right now!  hysterical

He held out well, as she arrived at 7:45. He's taking after his grandfather!

Speaking of Archer taking after his Grandpa...for those new to this group, Shaky's archive site is also the repository of a great deal of historical information, including the egg brooding shift changes and feeding charts from 2002-2008.  (Yes, I'm already taking notes for this year's chart)

Wow, now I can watch falcons in bed!

AND when you DO finally get up, viola!  Watch the sky over the tops while reading your droidomatic phone with the prisms!   nerd nth
13402  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Pictures from the Rfalconcam cameras on: 13-Apr-10, 08:39:08 PM
OK...the picture is a bit creepy...but in all these years of watching I never realized they have feather eyelashes!  That main cam is something else!

Wow! What detail...

And the brunch on her beak and under her chin...this is why I personally prefer our still picture format...you can't get this kind of detail on video (well, you probably could, but who could afford enough bandwidth to transmit or view it as much as we not-addicted folk do)

You mean the peregrinescope.

No, silly! The reading in bed kind!

Now, when will we know the names of they baby birds? Gender? Do we vote for the names?

Nope - we have no say in any of the above Sad

Not neccessarily true, Janet.  Gender, we surely have no say, but we have had input into eyas names in the past.  I'm hoping this wonderful community can be involved again!

LOOONG way to go before we even start talking about it.  33-35 days to hatch-counting starting ?...30 +/- more days to banding.  Not to be a party pooper...we're all VERY excited...but there's a reason for the old saying don't count your chickens before they hatch...

May 12 for Helga Jean!

Still didn't say if there's a story behind the name Helga Jean...inquiring minds and all that...

Ok - the story behind the name....
Over the years when friends were preggers, I'd call the baby Heartbeat or some such name.  With many more people finding out the sex of the baby long before birth, many now name the baby.  I like that.  So, for those that don't know the sex or haven't picked out a name, I make one up and call the baby that name until birth.  Generally, it is something the parents would never pick.  Helga is a nice strong-sounding Germanic name and Jean just flows nicely with it.  BTW, a friend is VERY pregnant, having a girl, hasn't picked a name, so I always call the baby Helga Jean.  It's a good name!

To answer how I will know which egg is Helga Jean - that will be the PUSHY One  laugh

Thanks!  Neat tradition and a loverly name (my Grandma was a Fatthauer)!

Just wait until I get my iDroidxus smart phone. I'll be able to access all of Rfalconcam, even chat.

Does it come with prism glasses so you can watch the birds live while reading the forum?   Shocked
13408  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Has brooding begun?? on: 13-Apr-10, 03:08:12 PM
It seems Beauty is spending more time there, although she did take a break from 1:22 to 1:39... Just recovering from laying an egg, or is there such a thing as brooding lite?

Figuring out when hard incubation begins is usually a look-back exercise...if that 15 minutes is the longest at one time in the next 24-36 hours we'd be fairly safe in assuming hard incubation has started.

Sneaking posts in while at work has it's difficulties...hit post before I meant to...

But even if all signs point to the real deal we could be wrong...they've fooled us before.  Just have to trust their instincts.

Yes, we (Shaky, Lisa McK and Carol P) saw Archer on top of the Times Square bldg, next to the NE wing.  He flew off and I spotted him flyinging past Midtown and low behind a bldg.  Never saw him after that.  He's probably out on a hunt.

Just an FYI that this is directly above the nestbox.

It's neat that we can "talk" to each other while you're on watch!  This will be a useful tool once you need eyes on the ground & the nestbox at the same time!
