two more.

Oh...by the way...these were the ones I wanted to share...still waiting for Joyce's since I don't know what forum they came from.
14013  Anything Else / Totally OT / Re: Smileys on: 06-Sep-09, 08:25:14 PM
I must have done something different when I tried before...thanks Dot!
14014  Anything Else / Totally OT / Re: Smileys on: 06-Sep-09, 08:23:38 PM
I'd swear I've tried just this before, but maybe I was missing something...
14015  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / Re: Alcoa Anglesea, Australia on: 06-Sep-09, 06:33:11 PM
Well, I sent them the pic and they've posted it with this note...

Monday September 7, 2009
It does appear that Sheila has laid four eggs.

Thank you to those who emailled in photos to help confirm this.  With Sheila increasing her time in the nest box,  there has been limited opportunity to view the number of eggs.

There are a few pics posted on the Cleveland board that look more like 4 eggs than mine, but that's OK...as long as they have healthy eyases!

Jim in ATL dug out the URL's for some of these (thanks Jim! Don't know if you've migrated here yet) and a few others from the IWF site...I can't seem to get them to work over here...

Judi-who was it who described a red tail as looking like a white football from the front when it perches on a pole?  Was it Siobhan?  Anyway, she's where I learned about the patagial markings...

Judy-as Judi said, the wing markings in flight are a dead giveaway.  In this picture (also by Lincoln at Pale Male)  the dark area on the leading edge of the wing from (as I think of it to remember it) the "shoulder" to the "elbow" is the comma shaped patagial mark

Also interesting to note are the 2 sets of shorter primary wing feathers...they're growing in after the annual molt...they lose them in symmetrical pairs in a defined order...the ones near mid wing are further along than the ones toward the tips.  I'm pretty sure this is Lola-her belly band is much darker than Pale Male.

A couple of other clues...if it's sitting on a pole, it's likely a red tail-it's their favorite hunting perch.  Hunting on the edge of a grassy field and a road and/or the edge between a mowed and unmowed section of grass just like your picture, it's likely a redtail.  They watch for movement in the taller grass waiting for the mouse or vole or whatever to come out into the open and pounce.  Some days it seems about every other pole along the road on my way to work has a red tail on it...makes driving tough sometimes  happy

I wonder what it can be?
Thanks,
Judy

Hi Judy-

A juvie Red Tail Hawk for sure!  Compare to this one...

This is a photo of the surviving juvie Red Tail hatched in Riverside Park NYC taken by Lincoln Karim and posted on his Pale Male website

Note the pale chest, dark belly band and light eyes-the eyes darken as the bird matures.

Nice pictures of a beautiful bird!

She did head back to Port Hope by the 31st, but it's good to know we have a watcher on the ground in the area, Carly!  That whole edge of Lake Ontario seems to be peregrine central.  I wonder what it is about the north shore of the lake that makes it more attractive than the south shore-other than Mariah patrolling a goodly chunk of the south shore  Wink

I was just over visiting Quest's rolling map and it appears she took a little side trip over to Etobicoke on the 29th...

OK Joyce...I figured out a not very elegant but functional way to find the source url's from other forums, so...which forum are these from?  I've seen them, just can't remember where (probably Buffalo, now that I typed that)

Anyway, let me know & we'll get them migrated!
14024  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Offspring / Re: Millie Finds a New Home, Family in Michigan on: 04-Sep-09, 03:44:03 PM
Great news!  We've updated Imprints.

Too bad we haven't heard anything more about Ihteram since she was unceremoniously prevented from nesting at the St. Joseph's Cathederal site  Sad

The thing that gets me in this whole tangled family tree thing is what are the chances in all the I don't even know how many wild peregrines out there that we'd have so many instances of known blood relatives of peregrines in Rochester pairing up with other known blood relatives of peregrines in Rochester...that's what's REALLY boggling my mind!  crazy

And I think we will one day find out that Ihteram moved from Detroit to Oregon, Ohio and took up with Millie's ex Swifty...or some such Falcon Crest moment  laugh Just knowing for sure that she survived to adulthood I have faith that she's nesting happily somewhere.
14025  Anything Else / Totally OT / Re: Smileys on: 04-Sep-09, 01:32:01 PM
I have a few like that too, from the IWS Eagle forum...no idea where they came from and no clue what the code is...

OK...I've done a test or 2...I can get them to paste & function on the Yahoo board and see the code there-I'll work on this over the weekend...
