I've checked my Buffalo lists of juvies. My guess is that this mystery falcon is from UB MacKay 2012: "Phoenix" (aka Talon Alda) male, b/g-16/AW, yellow tape. Parents are BB and Yankee.
I don't think it is a Rochester tiercel. Baron 2013 would more than likely have streaks, and doubtful Zephyr's 2008 band tape would last 5 years.
If you look closely and enlarge my photos, it looks like a 6 in the black. If you use Google Chrome you can enlarge screen to 150% and see 6. I thought I saw A in green on another pic, but nothing that I could get clear enough to post.
Well, they are pretty much neighbors, Billie and Phoenix! Interesting Joyce. Hopefully he will sit still long enough to get a good read on the band sooner rather than later. Though we do love a good mystery!

I know Beauty and DC are the odd couple but I find it really strange there's been no bonding at the box since the end of July. They did a lot of bonding before egg time this year and Peregrines all over appear to be bonding and spending time at the nest but nothing with this pair. Even Pigeons are getting comfortable around the nest box because there's no Falcons around to scare them off. Just weird..
They never have done a lot of off season bonding at the box. They're bonding at their other favorite places as they usually do.

This was an interesting statement - "DDT was banned in the Northern Hemisphere and regulated worldwide in the 1970s, but some places in the Southern Hemisphere still use the insecticide." I wonder where those places are?
And how do they know and why aren't they fined???? I read an article once upon a time that it was allowed to be used indoors where malaria mosquitoes are prevalent. I don't honestly recall right now where...

My thoughts exactly, Donna. And thanks for the article, Kris. I didn't realize that DDT wasn't banned in Australia until 1987, several years after it was banned here in the US.
I didn't realize they banned it that many years after we did either plus the half-life of DDT was quite surprising! I seem to recall a discussion of this last year. And I wonder if there has been any research into whether DDT could be stored in the polar ice that's melting... http://www.geotimes.org/aug08/article.html?id=nn_glaciers.htmlWell there you go...can't win...unless you just deny climate change even exists...
