The eyases are so mobile now!

(movie)

Just wait until they hop over the perch and head out into the poop-free zone.

Poop-free zone?? There's a poop-free zone??

For now.

Not so poop-free anymore

Say it IS a duckling... I did not know that falcons took prey other than on the wing. I would be interested to know if they take prey from the ground.

They generally don't take prey from the ground. But they have been known to go down to the river for a bath occasionally. And they will retrieve prey that fell to the ground. Archer did bring a duckling once. Probably just right place & time.

Hey Mom! Whatcha doing up there?
5344  Anything Else / Totally OT / Re: Mercury in Retrograde on: 11-Jun-14, 02:37:44 PM
Uh-oh!  I have already experienced the effect of Mercury in retrograde today, and yesterday we named an eyas Mercury when Mercury was in retrograde.  Yikes!    Cheesy

Barb in WLA mentioned that on social stream last night...

Nest Box Blue.

(OK - I am going now... always thought I could be gainfully employed by naming paint colours and car types... Well... someone has to!)

That works for me!

P.S.-I never got a chance to mention yesterday...outstanding Seussian commentary yesterday!

Also interesting to note what we usually don't see...the undersides of Nor'easter's legs & feet are yellow. Maybe it's a pigment that turns blue when exposed to the sun? We will figure out the reason some day  nerd
5347  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: 2014 Pictures from the Rfalconcam Cameras on: 11-Jun-14, 10:48:24 AM
Yep, she's a big girl.  And look at those gorgeous blue feet!  I think we'll need to come up with a name for that shade of blue.  How about falcon blue?

Hers are even bluer than Nor'easter...and maybe even bluer than Rosetta's...

Maybe Tesh blue?
5348  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: 2014 Pictures from the Rfalconcam Cameras on: 11-Jun-14, 10:40:21 AM

Well, I think Rhea Mae's legendary appetite has met it's match! No wonder Tesh couldn't stand up!

Banding Day videos

These videos show the retrieval of the eyases, the collection of samples from the nest box, the camera cleaning, and the return of the eyases.

I will try to re-record the video into smaller segments over the next few days
5350  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: 2014 Pictures from the Rfalconcam Cameras on: 10-Jun-14, 09:51:25 PM
Will the video be posted? I missed them being removed from the nestbox. I came at the cleaning.

I heard NCA was recording but had to go out right after the banding. And ustream doesn't post highlights right away. I'm sure whatever was recorded will be posted as soon as possible.

All tucked in with Momma watching over them...goodnight!
5352  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: 2014 Pictures from the Rfalconcam Cameras on: 10-Jun-14, 01:51:09 PM
DEC reported during banding that she had a very full crop. That might have played a part.
Thank you DEC!  And I apologize for my panicked partially all caps tweet And for spelling eyasses incorrectly in that same tweet. Smiley

I don't think there's any need to apologize for the panicked tweet. I don't think any of us were breathing at that point.  handshake

Still pretty much huddled in the corner...nice wings here though.

GET THIS THING OFF ME!
5355  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: 2014 Pictures from the Rfalconcam Cameras on: 10-Jun-14, 12:16:31 PM
Little stinker, scared us all stiff too!  I can breathe now!  yahoo

And thank you to DEC for sticking around to make sure all was well...

Yes big thank you and big sigh of relief.  handshake

Oh my - I had to walk away from computer.  Just came back, and it's like a miracle!  Heat or dehydration?
Did the eyases get weighed and checked out?  Will there be a report?

They don't get weighed here, but they are given a general health check. We usually don't hear anything  if all is well, which it usually is.

I really don't know what happened. I wonder if it toppled over & froze like they do when they're threatened. The other 3 barely moved that whole time but they were right side up so they looked OK. They all finally moved when Beauty came to the perch.
