!!! Kendal Update
July 29, 2013 - Toronto - Don Mills
CPF Postmaster Reports:

July 29th - 2013

We have just received an update on Kendal as of July 29th-2013

Kendal’s doing fine as of date. Both eating well and holding his weight and still receiving medication for pain management and to prevent Aspergillosis (not uncommon in captivity if peregrines are under stress). He still has the wing wrap on, and he’ll have it on for a minimum of 3 weeks.

Kendal is being housed in a room by himself to minimize stress and keep things as quiet as possible for him.

Just thought it was a neat shot...

Ah!  That may be the reason.  I don't have the word "falcon" in my twitter handle and I didn't say "falcon" in my tweet.  I only said "juvie."  I will try that.  And thanks for the number info.  I thought there was a way to send tweets just to @rfalconcam from my phone, but I guess not.

Shaky will have to set you up so that your account is one that is re-directed to rfalconcam before your tweets go there, key word or not.

6143  Anything Else / Totally OT / Re: Twitter Hints Needed on: 29-Jul-13, 01:40:27 PM
I just signed up for a twitter account a few days ago and started following rfalconcam and some of the watchers.  However, I just tried to tweet to @rfalconcam from my pc and my tweet hasn't come through on the forum yet.  Is there something I'm missing?  According to Twitter, my tweet was sent.  Also, how do I tweet to @rfalconcam from my phone?  Sorry, I'm a phone luddite, and I don't have a smart phone.

The ground watchers are set up so their tweets are forwarded from twitter to the forum provided they use certain keywords...like falcon...if their twitter moniker doesn't have a keyword in it. That's why Dana...Lou...Larry... come to mind...have to add falcon in there somewhere. And those who have it in their moniker will have ALL their tweets show up on the forum, whether intended or not.

That's a Shaky thing to set up.

The rest of us need to use Rfalconcamnow from the forum to distribute our news. I don't believe I can directly tweet to it and have it go anywhere except twitter.

I have a basic phone too...no need for anything fancy. Once you set up your phone on twitter you send a text message to 40404 and it will show up on twitter. Anyone who follows you and has mobile messaging enabled for you will get the tweet on their phone from 40404.

I have limited texts on my plan so I don't have mobile enabled most of the time. Before I left for Rochester I enabled mobile messaging for the people I follow. Then Carol & MAK & Dana etc.'s tweets to rfalconcam were delivered to my phone. And Rfalconcamnow tweets too.

I think that covers the basics. Hope that wasn't too confusing.

I really couldn't tell where that was from the article...so I won't ask.  secret

I heard an interview on Science Friday (NPR) some time ago where a scientist was talking about being able to implant electrodes in insects' brains in order to control them remotely...the implication being that these insects could be loaded up with certain types of chemical sensors and then sent into caves, buildings, etc...essentially using them as spies.  This particular technology was still being developed...but maybe bird spies aren't so far-fetched  happy

Love Science Friday when I am home! I miss it, tho I could probably search it out online. Thanks, Patti. (Anyone ever see TBBT episode when Sheldon was on SF?)

My local station doesn't subscribe to ScienceFriday but they do stream live online. Rochester's probably does too

True...it is in the realm of possibility. But I would hope the leg band wouldn't say "return to tel Aviv"  handshake

Wild Parrots Spotted in Rochester, New York

Sightings of wild Monk Parakeets (AKA Quaker Parrots) in western New York have been rare. Although the birds are reputed to have occasionally ranged as far north as Montreal, they exist in far greater numbers in the lower regions of the Empire State, relatively close to their original point of escape and dispersion at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

However in late 2012, a team of five monk parakeets was identified building a nest on a cell phone tower in Rochester, New York. This identification was credible, being made by Michael R. Wasilco, Regional Wildlife Manager, at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Subsequent visits from observers, including Jim Tarolli, who took the photo included with this article, substantiated the sighting on a popular bird board. It appears that the parrots have built their colonial nest on a tall (approximately 75-foot) cell phone tower in back of a shopping mall in a relatively suburban part of Rochester known as "Kodak Park."

To my knowledge, this is the first instance of a sighting in Monroe County, New York. Earlier in 2012, it appears that a pair of parrots had built a nest somewhere in Albany, far to the East of Rochester but still "upstate" relative to the birds' downstate habitat, but the birds' plans were interrupted when the female was captured by authorities, an event followed by destruction of the nest and the disappearance of the male.

No one has yet advanced an hypothesis explaining why wild parrots are now appearing so far north and west of New York City. It's unlikely that "The Rochester Five" flew all the way up the Hudson River and Mohawk Valleys from Brooklyn. Quaker Parrots are legal in New York State so it's possible that the "Rochester Five" are birds that were released from a home or a pet store and "went native." Only time will tell whether authorities in Rochester welcome or attempt to repel these new additions to Rochester's diverse list of birds.

ISTANBUL — A bird of prey found in a Turkish village has been cleared of local suspicion it was aiding Israeli spies.

The private Dogan news agency reported Friday that villagers in a rural town in central Turkey found the kestrel this week and delivered it to local authorities after discovering a leg band marked "24311 Tel Avivunia Israel." Such bands are often used to track bird migrations.

Authorities confirmed in a statement that they released the bird into the wild Thursday after x-rays performed at a veterinary hospital found that "there was no other device" attached to the bird aside from the leg band.

Dogan, which published a copy of the x-ray record, says medical staff labeled it "Israeli Spy." It was not immediately clear whether the label was tongue-in-cheek.
