A seal pup has been rescued after being spotted in a busy lorry park at a ferry terminal in south west Scotland. Workers at the Cairnryan port spotted the six-week-old earlier this month. Despite their best efforts to encourage it back into the water the pup refused to go and so the Scottish SPCA was called in. One ferry worker tried to put the animal in the boot of his car to keep it safe - but it broke out and was found on the dashboard. The pup - which has been named Smartie - was recovered by Scottish SPCA animal rescue officer Alistair Hill. He said the weather in the area had been "particularly bad" at the time with strong winds and stormy seas. "The seal pup had made its way into the lorry park via a steep, man-made banking," he said. "It would have taken a lot of effort for him to get up there and he had no intention of returning to the choppy waters. "Normally we'd ask people to leave seals alone until we arrive but there was a risk he could have been injured in the busy lorry park so a member of staff put him in their car until I got there." However, the seal managed to escape from the boot by pushing down one of the rear seats and wriggling up onto the dashboard. "He is clearly a very smart seal as he ended up watching the storm out the windscreen of the car from his warm, dry spot on the dash," said Mr Hill. The seal is recovering from his adventure at the Scottish SPCA's National Wildlife Rescue Centre near Alloa. Centre manager Colin Seddon said: "Smartie was weak and dehydrated when he first arrived but he's now doing really well in our care and already feeding himself. He's currently housed in an individual seal pen which has a wet and dry area for him. As he grows in strength and size we'll move him to one of our outdoor pools where he'll interact with other seals and get used to swimming and feeding in the deeper water." It is hoped the pup can return to the wild in about a month's time. via Arbroath

From the youtube page... Published on Jan 28, 2013 18 Jan 2013 at 0843. Intruding falcon gets mobbed. The story in short: An unknown, un-ringed intruding falcon came to the box at 0843. Note the very speckled breast, unlike the resident female. After a while she was aggressively mobbed [0:30], most likely by a resident bird although the flybys are so fast that even using video at 25 frames per second an accurate idenification could not be made. The intruder eventually left the box and a couple of hours later the original pair returned to do a bit of pair bonding. All calm at the moment, but who knows for how long. These diputes for territory are natural and nature will take its course. This activity may indicate that peregrines are starting to establish nesting sites ready for the new season. www.hawkandowl.org

Kathy O, Lisa McK, Dana and I took a trip to Buffalo to spend some time with Diamante at Central Terminal. Both Diamante and Gleig were home and I was thrilled when Diamante stooped directly over me! That boy can really move! lol We also saw him fly into some nearby trees and snatch an unsuspecting Starling from one of the branches. Quite an impressive hunter. Love to see "our kids" doing well. I love to hear he's doing so well! Did you get any pictures?

We all have our favorites and some get more attached to individuals than others, NONE of us likes to see the end come for any of the Peregrine's that's a given. Everyone has to realize its part of a healthy population that there will be challenges, winners and losers. That there are more Peregrines out there is a new dynamic, we never had enough to have so many challenges for territory.
I guess that's the price we have to pay for a recovering species. Sigh...

It seems like a very strange pose for a peregrine, living or dead, to be in. The proportions seem strange -- where is the tail? -- and there seems to be a light spot on one of the wings. It also seems wider than I would expect a peregrine to be. It's a mystery.
Paul
All the watchers that were downtown believe it is a peregrine.
