Mind yourselves out there today!

 blustery

Stupid stupid drivers. Took me 25 minutes longer than it should have to get to work. We got maybe 5 inches, 6 in spots. The main roads are all plowed & salted & sanded. Still a bit slick, so I probably would have kept it to 40-45 mph. Got stuck, along with a plow truck & 1/2 mile of cars, behind a clown doing 10 mph. UNBELIEVABLE!

But I'm here & safe...you all stay safe too...be back later!
8044  Other Nature Related Information / Raptor Web Cams / Re: Chris -- SCREECH OWL nestbox 2013 on: 26-Dec-12, 09:30:06 AM
I think the year it was off line was due to Chris being ill & unable to tend to the nest box and cameras. I can't recall if there were owlets that year or not.

At any rate-this year's owlet family portrait! http://chriswjohnson.blogspot.com/

"I gather some loyal followers have been waiting (and waiting, and waiting) for the official 2012 Owlet Family Portrait. Well, happy Christmas, and merry holidays; wait no more.

From left to right, that’s owlet 4, 2, 1 and 3. Owlet no. 1 tested its wings on a number of occasions by flying away from the photo shoot, forcing me to drop whatever I was doing to go retrieve the scamp before he/she could go anywhere unreachable (under the nearby brush pile that was the preferred target, for instance). After seeing that no harm came from flying away or being retrieved, owlet no. 2 soon started doing the same thing.

Feeling obligated to return to the nest the same number of owlets I’d borrowed, lest the adult owls decide I’m completely evil (as opposed to my normal status as a mere pest), those test flights, while very sensible on the owlets’ parts (what better time to test those wings properly?), were a bit stressful for me. Mme. Owl, who observed this whole process from a nearby tree, calling to the owlets from time to time, seemed to prefer that they be kept together as well. (Was her message “put up with the annoying monkey; it does this kind of thing, but you’re safe … or the monkey gets my talons in its head”? That was the translation I settled on at the time.)

Anyway, everyone was returned to the nest safely, and Mme. Owl did not swear a vendetta against me, so, as usual, it all worked-out. However, owlet no. 1 must have liked what it saw of the outside world (all of the owlets did) along with the feel of air on its open wings (“a prince of the power of the air”, if my Emerson is coming back correctly), because it decided to leave the nest that very night, shortly after sunset, as is traditional. Owlet no. 2 waited an additional three days before leaving. Was that unusual enthusiasm in owlet no. 1, or was it because he/she was laid three days before owlet no. 2, even though they ultimately hatched within hours of each other? I have no idea.

Study all you want, but never forget that the closer you look, the more mysteries nature offers you. I can’t imagine a better deal than that."

Rhea Mae Watches Over Toronto City Hall
December 24, 2012 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Tracy Simpson Reports:

I stopped in on my travels at the Toronto Sheraton Hotel in search of Rhea Mae and her handsome beau Tiago.  As there is virtually no place to park, I circled the block and hoped for red lights at every intersection so I could scan the buildings.  As I turned east onto Queen St., I looked over at Nathan Phillips Sq. and city hall but it wasn’t the skaters and festivities that caught my attention.  There was a lump on the antenna on city hall.  Rather than dismiss it, I pulled over and pulled out my binoculars and found Rhea Mae perched on the very top of the antenna!  I circled the block again and this time found Tiago on the south side of Richmond St on a building so high I had to stick my head out of the window to see him!  I parked the car and decided to take a minute to grab a few pictures of the pair.  Rhea Mae was overseeing things at city hall and was clearly on the hunt.  I could see her head swivelling back and forth as she watched events below.  Tiago was much more restless as he flew back and forth from corner to corner of his chosen building and I could hear him chupping with each landing.  Tiago was clearly excited about Rhea Mae’s current interest in hunting.  As I left the pair, they remained in their chosen spots and although not as readily seen on camera, they are certainly home for the holidays!!

Quest is at her nest box. They seem to have increased the refresh rate on the camera-I have a few videos. She has a GINORMOUS crop!

Pot Plant Owl post quoted below

21 December and the end of the world as we know it

I like to think that today, the 21st December, marks the end of the world as we know it. Now before devout religious fanatics or athiests alike get up in arms with my statement, hear me out.

I love new beginnings. A New Year where all ones past woes are left behind as one starts afresh. I love birthdays that mark another milestone in ones life. I love the dawn - the beginning of a new day unlike any other. I love the start of a new life form - a seed that grows into a magnificent tree, and a small egg that reveals a tiny chick.

And I love the idea, however far-fetched it may sound to others, that a New Dawn is beginning for us here on Earth. Right here. Right now.

We have the chance to start afresh - to look at the beauty that is all around us and appreciate it. All of you who have followed PPO and her family (for months or years) are already there. You love and appreciate Nature. You respect and admire the trials and tribulations that our owl family has gone through to be with us again today.

I'd like to believe, no, I need to believe, that others, who have not taken the time to notice the natural world around them, are waking up for the first time and starting to 'get' this thing called Life.

Life isn't about fancy cars, or lots of money, or designer shoes. Yes, those items can make living more comfortable, but they are not the real deal.

The real deal is right in front of us all. In my garden, it is in this pot plant nest where two little owl chicks are finding their feet (and soon their wings).

I like to think that today marks a new beginning - for us all.

Thank you for the info - I'm glad they are relatively safe, in a rural area. In the city where I live, they wouldn't have a chance. I don't think I've heard of a "sentinel goose" before.

Many birds will have one member of the flock watching for danger while the others are going about their business. I've heard them called the sentinel. That just seemed to be what that one goose was doing LOL!
