From Christiane on Kfalconcam: So sorry to hear about Valiant--does anyone know if he had fathered any young at the Ogdensburg site; didn't know if anyone was following that location. What a loss this week. Fly high Valiant and Callidora. Christiane My records show he nested twice in Ogdensburg with Zanar (69/K B/B 2004 Crowne Plaza Ottawa) 2009 & 2010. I'm not sure how many hatches there were in 2009, but I have them marked as not surviving to fledge. There were 4 hatches in 2010 and no reports of fatalities. There were no reports that anyone was able to find for 2011. So there were 3 potential additional nesting years somewhere unobserved. That is my one comfort with this news...he left offspring behind. Still terribly sad...

From 8 February, I will not be online a few weeks because I go to the hospital. Since the end of July last year I have pain in my right hip. On 9 February I will operate.
I hope the surgery is successful! Will you be able to have someone let us know you're OK after the surgery? We do worry, you know. You know there will be lots of healing thoughts coming your way!

Nest Update 01/25/12: On Wednesday, we saw one of the parents perform the old trick where they dump grass on the seated parent to get that adult to stand up so they can switch positions. And as we see, it usually works. I love when they do this...I always think of Mariah trying to get Kaver to move. I wonder if she ever dropped pebbles on his back?

Snoring Dormouse with sound - listenThings I did not know before viewing this adorable video shot by Surrey Wildlife Trust Mammal Project Officer Dave Williams: 1) The dormouse, a little rodent species you'll find in Britain, hibernate in the winter in nests they hide on the ground. 2) The dormouse spends up to one-third of its life in hibernation, and typically begin that winter "sleep" when the first frost hits, and their food sources are gone. 3) They loose about a quarter of their body weight during hibernation. 4) The word "dormouse" comes from the Anglo-Norman dormeus, which means "sleepy (one)" You can donate to support the Surrey Wildlife Trust's nature conservation work here. via Boing Boing(via @joeljohnson, photo: Dave Williams, Surrey Wildlife Trust)

And M/T isn't exactly his number...he's M/T* (the T is sideways)
Facts I found: Sabrina was M/*T left sideways (that's why * is left of letter) Sabrina was banded June 1, 2006. One of the USFW numbers used in Rochester in 2004 was 1687-01177. Learn something new every day...never knew the * was supposed to indicate direction! Thanks!

Figured I'd post this here: By Diana Robinson
Crows and falcons already coexist in city
The writer of Saturday's letter suggesting the use of falcons to rid Rochester of its crows seems to be unaware of two points. First, the crows gather in Rochester as darkness falls and leave early in the morning, whereas falcons hunt during daylight hours. Second, we already have falcon presence in Rochester. At least one peregrine falcon, Beauty, is seen downtown on a daily basis, often pausing on or around the Mercury statue a couple of blocks from where the crows gather. Her appearances are reported on Facebook (Rfalconcam) and at rfalconcam.com.
—DIANA ROBINSON ROCHESTER as posted in the D & C
Can you imagine releasing a non-resident peregrine in downtown Rochester? OMG! I wouldn't want to see that battle!
