Baby aardvark takes first steps in Antwerp zoo

A two-week-old ant-eating aardvark has been unveiled at Antwerp zoo in Belgium. Little Nuru, which means 'light' in Swahili, is only the tenth baby aardvark born in the zoo in more than 50 years. Xavier Beghin, a spokesperson for the zoo said it was difficult to get aardvarks to breed.

Aardvark mothers can be rather nonchalant with their offspring and not very loving, he added. At night, accidents happen with mothers knocking their babies with their powerful feet. The mothers also often do not produce enough milk so their young struggle to put on weight.
It was the baby aardvark's mother Curly's fourth attempt to give birth. Her first three babies did not survive. The spokesman said she may have learnt her lessons, adding Curly had become very protective towards little Nuru since the baby was born on January 6.

During the first two weeks of her life, she was kept under 24-hour surveillance. Mr Beghin said that it was too early to see if baby Nuru is a boy or a girl. An elusive, nocturnal creature, aardvarks are rarely seen in the wild. They live mainly in sub-saharan Africa.

As  Siobhan Ruck once posted after the death of a fledgeling in San Francisco, "It may have been a short life, but every bit of it was lived as a Peregrine Falcon."

Thanks for the reminder, Paul.  Very sad tonight...

Replacement Female Jan 20, 2012

We do not yet have all our questions answered about the death of the adult female bald eagle at Norfolk Botanical Garden on Jan 6, 2012. However, as of yesterday Jan 20, 2012, we do have the answer to one question. Is the current female that the male is with the same female that he had been with since Sept 2011? The answer – NO! The current female is yet another fifth year bald eagle in her first breeding season. Look at her tail feathers that have brown/black in them unlike the prior female. She is also molting head feathers with a distinct bare spot in the top of her head, and her bill is still turning yellow with grey. She also has many more older, more worn, lighter brown body contour feathers. Eagle cam photos Jan 21, 2012.

Wow...so many thoughts right now...she's almost 2 so she's pretty strong to make it this far... interesting that she's near where Beauty was hatched.  I've often wondered if the Toronto nesting cluster of Mariah's daughters might indicate that's where Mariah was hatched.

But mostly I'm happy she was found & is receiving good care and sending healing thoughts her way...  wub2

I have them in my yard, but they are VERY hard to spot.  I've spent lots of time thinking I was watching a robin then I see the blue as it's flying away.  My bunch tend to sit close to the trunks of the trees they're in and they like the fluffy conifers.
