Tracking NX

Where is she now?

October 1: NX was able to check in today. Since we heard from her last, she has ventured further inland on the Little Wicomico River to a place called Hansons Cove. It is a heavily wooded area, and her tracks show her flying back and forth to trees on either side of the cove. Her last known position shows that she has returned to her a preferred tree in a more populated zone of the river.
NX spent a few days exploring Hansons Cove on the Little Wicomico River.

September 30: NX did not “phone home” today. On September 28, she was still in the same place along the Little Wicomico River. She may be out of cell phone range, and will check in again when she is back in an area with coverage.

Beautiful flowers! thumbsup The butterfly is a monarch?

That's a Monarch!  Beautiful pics!
Beautiful pics as always!

This reminds me...while driving up to Saratoga to my periodontist (he's worth the 2 hour drive) and on the way back I noticed huge numbers of butterflies fly over & near the Thruway.  They were orange, so I'd guess they were Monarchs.  I think the caterpillars develop (what's the right term-pupate?) into butterflies on milkweed, so it makes sense they'd be on highway edges.  There were just so many of them!

I remember reading or hearing a few years ago that monarchs were in decline in NY.  Ward Stone (then biologist for NYS DEC) had asked everyone to note if they saw ANY Monarchs and report in...I remember noting very few.  I guess they're rebounding, at least along the highway.

The Rfalconcam merchandising team is working on calendars for 2012, and we need your help!  We would like followers of Rfalconcam to submit 1 wildlife picture they have photographed.  Yes, this photo needs to be one you have taken yourself.

Directions on how to submit your photo will follow.  In the meantime, this gives you a chance to go through your own archives and find us a whimsical, cute, spectacular, unique, or even scary view of the wildlife world.

Thanks for your efforts in this endeavor, and please wait for further instructions rather than posting your pictures here.

Carrie-- general wildlife (i.e. non peregrine)?

Yes, for this one, general wildlife, non-peregrine.

Sounds like there will be a peregrine one too...maybe no Rochester babies, but plenty of Rochester peregrines...and there were lots of grand-eyases this year...better start saving my pennies!

But there is more to this group than just our primary focus...excellent idea! clap

Carol- is Kaetzchen Gabriella of Tokira a new baby?  I don't remember seeing that picture before...

Yep  happy
She was originally bought from a decent breeder in Kentucky two years ago, by a person (and I use the term loosely), who, at six months, had her spayed and declawed, and dumped her in a shelter.  The shelter manager wanted to adopt her, and took her home, but something happened to his living arrangement, and she went back to the shelter.  By that time she was so traumatized that when she was put on Petfinder in early spring this year, she was listed as "Feral".  A bunch of us who are involved in Oriental cat rescue got together, and after about 150 emails, all coordinated by Deb in CT, we arranged a relay transport to WV.  We've taken it slow, pretty much at her speed, and she's for the most part recovered.  I still can't pick her up, but she does come to me for scritches, and treats, and is fine with the other cats.  I've had her nearly five months now.  She was two years old on July 4th.

Carol
Back up to four cats...

Congratulations...to you and to her for finding such a great Mom at last!  She is beautiful!

My boy Chewbacca still won't let me pick him up...it's been 8 years now.  You can see he wants to be OK with it, but feet off the floor & he panics.  But he snuggles up in bed at night and loves a good butt scrath, so all is well in the end.

Another blast from the past...this one a bit further back.  I don't know who took the picture.  I printed it soon after I saw it on my old not great printer.  It's been hanging on my office wall ever since. I discovered one of the work scanners can actually handle pictures...so...from 2006...
