Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcons News / Re: Beauty Found Injured - Downtown Rochester (2/10/12)

Do other raptors fight to the death like peregrines? This has been bothering me for quite some time now. Most of the back yard birds I'm familiar with usually settle their battles before any serious injury occurs. How will the peregrine population ever increase if one simply replaces another through serious injury or death? Perhaps this is happening because of so many nests in cities?? Sometimes it almost seems as if peregrines are determined to keep their population low. It's extremely frustrating to watch. I sure hope someone can post some good information on this subject for me to read.

I've read this over and over and it still doesn't make sense that any conservation group would see an eagle "take" as a step forward in protecting golden eagles. The whole concept sickens me. It is horribly ironic that a "green" source of energy is turning out to be so lethal to birds and bats. There have to be solutions much better than sanctioning legal raptor kills. Dot in PA

Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: Incredible photos of Christmas Island red crab migration

Dale, that was incredible! Here's something I found out about the migration that's pretty cool: While the rains provide the moist preconditions for the march to begin, the timing of the migration breeding sequence is also linked to the phases of the moon. Eggs are released by the female red crabs into the sea precisely at the turn of the high tide during the last lunar quarter. How they know the right time to release their eggs is another amazing miracle of nature. Dot in PA

Anything Else / Totally OT / Re: Sugar Plum Fairy as you've never heard it!

Donna's original posting of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy has now become my favorite Christmas music. I also loved Shaky's two versions of Carol of the Bells. I've always been grateful for all the falcon information here but the non-falcon postings are every bit as wonderful. It makes it fun to sign in, never knowing what I will find. Dot in PA

Thanks, Bobbie. We do our tree in birds, too, although we mix in some other Christmas ornaments. Many of my birds have feathers that are looking a little the worse for wear but it's really hard to find replacements that don't cost a fortune. Dot in PA
