[We got lucky - here just west of Allentown PA we had only 5 inches of snow. We had planned a family holiday gathering in Philadelphia today but it was canceled because the city broke a 100-year-old record and got 23.2 inches. Highways are clear but the city itself won't be fully plowed out any time soon. My sister on Long Beach Island on the Jersey shore had 18 inches, enough to bring her community to a screeching halt. We lived 35 years in the snowbelt in Oswego NY on the east end of Lake Ontario, so it's been fun watching everyone else dealing with massive snowfall. Dot in PA]

[What a fascinating piece of writing! Who knew that city peregrines around the world have taken to night hunting? Conservation groups have been working hard to get large cities to dim their lights to avoid killing so many migrant birds. At least these peregrines have reaped a benefit from city lights. Still, I sure wish cities weren't so brightly lit, killing so many birds during migration.Dot in PA]

[This is a minor issue but has been driving me nuts. Usually when I click on a smiley to insert it into my posting text, the graphic shows up on the preview. Sometimes, though, only the graphic name shows up on the preview. When this happens, if I add an extra colon after the graphic name in my text, the graphic then shows up in the preview but so does the extra colon. Any idea why? If you need to see an example, it happened to me this morning when I posted a reply to the "In praise of old dogs" topic in the General Nature category.Dot in PA]
