Don't forget to check the comments in Imprints. Lennoxman has such a sense of humor and his last post included pics from a peregrine's eye view from the top of the Lennox Power Plant where the nestbox is.
It looks as if there's a door in the front that has been fastened shut. How on earth would Quest recognize this as a nest box?? Or am I looking at the back of the nest box in these photos? I'm easily confused ...

Hi fellow falcon watchers! I'm a Buffalo falcon watcher!
Did I hear mention of a round-eyed cat? Cookiecat wants to be introduced!

Cookiecat is a beauty! :I like her long tongue and the photos of her being held so we can see how huge she is!

I just received these pictures with a warning to be careful outside and wait for (baby) hedgehogs. greetings Aafke[/quote] I'm so glad you posted these adorable pictures! I've never even seen a hedgehog up close, let alone a tiny rolled-up baby with the cutest face imaginable.

I want to make one of these. I have the cage type and the bigger woodpeckers wont use it.
Many feed stores like Agway sell a larger size cage that the bigger woodpeckers like the hairy and red-bellied will use. Even so, that's not really big enough for a pileated woodpecker to get comfortable on. If you make the suet log, make sure it's plenty long enough for a big woody. Even if you're too urban for a pileated, other woodpeckers can share it instead of allowing only one at a time.

I've used a log like that for many years and it has always been extremely popular. Suet is a really nutritional bird food. I don't put perches on my logs, though. Woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches, and titmice don't need a perch - they cling to the bark with no problem. The directions given for making suet have you render it (that's why the cooking) but that's not really necessary either unless you plan to use molds to make a specific size suet cake. Uncooked suet goes easily into the holes even though it can be a bit messy. It freezes well, too. Grocery store meat departments used to give suet away free for the asking, but now, unless I get lucky at a butcher's shop, I usually have to buy it at Wegmans.

Just got this very good news from Bat Conservation Times:
The U.S. Congress has approved $1.9 million in federal funding for research to identify the cause and seek solutions to White-nose Syndrome – the disease that is devastating bat populations throughout the northeastern United States and threatening bat species across North America. The funds, included in the final version of the 2010 Interior and Environment Appropriations bill, mark a dramatic increase from the initial allocation of just $500,000 for monitoring affected bat populations. The WNS-research support was added by a joint committee that resolved differences between House and Senate versions of the bill. Both houses of Congress approved it on Thursday (October 29). The bill now goes to President Obama, who is expected to sign it into law.Dot in PA
