I know you didn't Carol.  I did more research and emailing and Linn and Rueben are much further from this little guy - I think I didnt' google accurately, it is the other pair at ICIC he's likely met up with as Frank said.  Not that that makes the situation any less precarious.

I didn't realize the Gyrfalcon was just a juvie apparently - what a sad situation, I feel bad for him too.  If he stays free he will have to learn to be a wild falcon on his own and there are no others like him here to meet up with and enjoy his freedom with.  I hope the owner can get him back, much as I'd like to see the little guy free..I suspect his life wouldn't be easy here as this is not his natural environment.

Ahhh, I didn't realize the Gyr was a juvie.  A very sad situation.  I feel really bad for him too.  He certainly seems to be hunting well thankfully.  Although if he wasn't, it might be easier to capture him if he was hungry.  Hope it all works out.

Don't feel bad at all Carly!  I never meant to make you feel that way.

I'm glad you posted this information.  It's better to know what's going on, than not to know.

I totally trust Tracy and Big Frank and the other CPFers to keep an eye on the situation.

It may not be Linn or Rueben at all.

My hope is that all the birds involved will be safe.   wave

November 12, 2012 - International, National and Local News
Frank Butson Reports:
It has some local competition, with a Coopers Hawk that hunts the same pigeons, a local Redtailed Hawk that hunts  the hydro field just north of the plaza and apparently a Peregrine Falcon who it had a tussle with on Sunday afternoon.

Isn't this Linn's neighborhood?

Yes, Linn and Rueben are in this area, nesting on the Yellow Pages Building in Scarborough.  When she first showed up there, she was seen on the Bell bldg, which has a hack box on it.  Tybropa-Cree and his siblings were hacked from this box.

There is a very good chance that the adult Peregrine is either Linn or Rueben.  This is not good news!   Sad

I really don't know what to say.  When I posted the story of Cher Ami this morning, I thought to myself, "Anne is going to love this story."  I loved to read Anne's stories about her balcony pigeons.

Dear Annie,
Rest in Peace

We Remember the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month when World War I came to an end!!

This is a day early, but I wanted to give everyone a chance to share their thoughts and to remember and thank all those that have served to give us the freedoms we have today.  Thank you all!

Veteran’s Day Tribute to Cher Ami.

I usually report about the Rochester Falcons, but today I wanted to talk about and honor another kind of bird on this Veteran’s Day.  Against all odds, a very unlikely heroine saved 194 lives on October 3, 1918.

The more than 500 men of the 77th Division of the United States Army were trapped behind enemy lines, surrounded by enemy troops.  They were running out of food and ammunition and they were desperate to communicate their location to division headquarters 25 miles away.  In those days, they didn’t have cell phones, computers or satellite radios.  No Tweets like the Rochester Falcon Watchers use now.  In this case, the homing carrier pigeon was their only form of communication.

As the 77th Division came under “friendly fire”, homing pigeons were dispatched.  The pigeons carrying the first two messages were shot down.  Only one was left, Cher Ami (Dear Friend in French), a Black Check hen (at first believed to be a male).  She was dispatched with a note in a canister on her left leg.  â€śWe are along the road parallel to 276.4.  Our own artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us.  For heaven’s sake, stop it!”

Cher Ami rose from the brush and came under fire by the German soldiers as they spotted her.  The American soldiers watching her saw her get shot and fall to the ground.  But some how she launched herself skyward and again took flight, and was gone.

She made the 25 mile trip to division headquarters in sixty-five minutes.  Despite being shot through the breast, blind in on eye and with a leg hanging only by a tendon, she completed her last mission, delivering the message that would save 194 American lives.

Army medics worked hard to save her life.  They did but were unable to save her leg, so a small wooden leg was carved to replace it.  When she was well enough to travel, this little one-legged hero was put on a boat to the United States, personally seen off by General John J. Pershing.

After arriving in the United States, she was awarded the Croix de Guerre Medal with a Palm Oak Leaf Cluster for her heroic service.  On June 13, 1919, she died, but was never forgotten.

Today you can still see her at the Smithsonian Institution, where she is on display in the National Museum of American History’s “Price of Freedom” exhibit.  If I ever have a chance to go to the Smithsonian, I will definitely visit with Cher Ami and thank her for a job well done!

5623  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Has KPF Been Spotted Post-Sandy? on: 09-Nov-12, 07:14:36 PM
Yep, two falcons seen this evening.  Although I never had a chance to verify it was Dot.ca on Mercury's money bag hand, I'm fairly certain it was Beauty on the FCT.

No one has reported seeing KPF since MAK's last sighting.  I keep looking for her daily.  She may have migrated.  Or not.
