Dana and I were planning on going to Buffalo early Saturday morning.  I received an email from Sage (in Buffalo) Friday evening about the nest location being changed after the two eyases were banded at Niagara Falls.  They were very worried that the adults were not attending to the young ones.  Dana and I decided to make that our first stop Saturday morning.

Very nice pictures Dana!  It was so nice to see that all was well with this Peregrine family.   clap

Fly Free Lady Gaga.  You won't be alone.  Too many went before you.   Sad

"A huge thank you to the Rochester group - (now nick-named the RFW,, - (the Regional Falcon watchers) who travelled from Rochester New York to Niagara Falls, Buffalo New York to provide the valuable observations from the Niagara Falls New York side of the falls,,,, that were able to visually confirm that both parents were in attendance and were already involved in feeding the hatchlings in the new nest cavity."

Who are the Regional Falcon Watchers and where are they from?   confused  tease

I personally like Rochester Falcon Watchers, since that's where we're homebased.  We're just in travel mode, since we don't have any fledges to watch.

We arrived at Terrapin Point on Goat Island around 9 am.  This gave us a direct view across the Niagara River at the scrape.  Sage and Roger were already there and had seen an adult deliver food to the new location.  I set up my scope and almost immediately saw the female enter the new scrape and stand in front of the young with her wings, giving them shade.  It was really sunny and very warm.  Sage and Roger left and Dana and continued to watch for a couple hours.  In that time, we saw two feedings and a food transfer from the tiercel to the female.  Both adults flew back and forth, while the eyases either dozed or moved around like little white fuzzy godzillas!  They are at that very cute, ackward stage.  No pin feathers yet that we could see.  This will be a very late fledge.

All was well and I contacted Mark Nash by text to let him know.

Holy Moly!  I can't help but remember Quest's first day of flying.  On her 2nd flight, she did come to the ground and there was an almost rescue.  She had other ideas though and now look at her.  She is her momma's daughter.   Cry  Good job all!    clap

Knock on wood.  If there is a place where Harlie can get into trouble, she probably will.   But then Quest took her time choosing the right place.  She certainly scouted out Canada and Cape Cod.

and Nantucket.   wave
6636  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Eggs or No Eggs at KP! That is the Question! on: 11-Jul-11, 04:27:46 PM
I received an email on the 9th (of July) at my work address from one of the workers at the power plant at KP where the scrape is located.  He said that they are very certain that there are two eggs and that both Unity and Archer are trading off incubating.  It looks like they (the falcons) have dug even deeper into the scrape and that's probably why we can not longer see the eggs from below.  They (the falcons) were seen turning the eggs.

Sooooooooo, the question is, are these the old eggs that are probably not viable?  Or are they a new clutch?   confused

We'll keep watching and reporting what we see.  and I'll share what I hear from the folks that work there.

I am so glad to hear that young Harlequin  wub2  has fledged safely and is doing well on her first flights (and landings!).  The flights are usually easy, it's the landings that get a bit tricky!  Thank you Carly for contacting Bruce and getting an update on our girl.   clap

I wonder if the 2 eggs MAK posted in her June 17th FalconWatch report are the one's she is sitting on now?
photo/MAK

After MAK alerted us of eggs at the scrape, I checked my pics and found 2 eggs in a photo on Sunday June 12th, 5 days before.  Old or new eggs?

Here are some pics of today's watch at 3:16 pm:

On my way home I check to see if Beauty is on Xerox.  Sometimes it is so dark, that I have to use my camera to tell.  This was taken at 9:27pm:

Well, we all saw the two eggs sitting up front back in June, but they either were disposed of or pushed back further where they are now being incubated.  These two eggs were not cracked, so they were at least a 2nd clutch.  Now the question is, are they the eggs being incubated?  Or is there a 3rd clutch of eggs?

Guess we'll never know and all we can do is wait and see.

All the Rochester Watchers are keeping an eye on them and will let you know if anything changes.

Personally, I  think all of you ROC Watchers know more than you let  on to us "couch perchers".  Cheesy  ( I say that with reverence!)
You are all so knowledgeable about our falcons, so I think this clutch is going to hatch, and that the Falcon Flakes will revel in the new birth in the snow!    happy

lol Margaret!  lol  We (the Rochester Falcon Watchers) have absolutely no idea what's going on at KP.  It's all new to us and we're as baffled as everyone else.  Wish we were able to give some answers, but we truly don't have any.

All we can do is report what we see.   falcon

I may be speculating - but it's been awful quiet from the "northern front" lately, and Lou saying six "hopeful" watchers up at KP.    Hopeful?   It's piqued my curiosity about what's going on up there...what are we "hoping" for?

Hey Margaret.  We're all keeping a close eye on Unity's behavior at the scrape at KP.  We're speculating about whether there are eggs or not and daydreaming about a Winter Fledge Watch!   lol

I don't think it's a butterfly Annette, looks creepy and see through!

Looks like a developing insect inside a cocoon?   Maybe it dropped down into cam view?

Looks like a leaf hoppy to me.   lol

!!! Lady Gaga looking good
July 07, 2011 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge
Dennis Patrick Reports:

At 4 P.M. we took a bird into the Vet’s office so she could have something to eat. The lady on duty said that she would give it to Lady Gaga around 6 P.M. because of having surgery on her leg this morning. She was awake and looking at us when we saw her. She is being well taken care of so we left there feeling somwhat better than yesterday. It’s always sad to see such a wonderful creature in a cage rather than flying like she has been doing. We’re thankful that she is looking so good. Will keep you updated as time goes on.

To add a little more information about the nest site.  These ledges are all that remains of cut-off balconies.  The balconies became dangerous and had to be removed.

Balconies like you can climb out your window on to the balcony? Were there doors at one time? I guess it's a good thing because maybe they wouldn't pick that building if they were still attached. Sayin! Good info Carol, thanks!!

Yes Donna.  From what I was told, it led me to believe that people could go out onto the balconies.  There must have been a way to get out onto them.
