7156  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Falcon Flakes New Year Tradition on: 30-Dec-10, 07:51:45 AM
What fun, Ei! Wish I could attend... tho I would be bringing beverages with caffeine! (...and perhaps a wee dram? After all - it IS Hogmannay!) What does everyone get up to? Where do you meet? I love details, even when I cannot come!

Slainte to all!

BOBBIE

Of course you can join us Bobbie!  See the chat button up above?  Click it and you're there!  This is a virtual NY party!  The folks on the ground do the traditional first falcon watch with a dram of (blackberry brandy I think?) a bit later in the morning!

So, whatever time is equal to 11:30pm or so eastern US time pop on in!

Ei

Yes!  The local Rochester Falcon Flakes will be meeting on the Broad St. Bridge at noon on Saturday, for a toast to a successful 2011 Falcon season.  Please join us if you can.  This is a yearly tradition.

Hmmm, maybe we can talk Shaky into pointing Camera 1 at the bridge for a few moments on Saturday if he's around.   happy

I will try to make the chat for awhile tomorrow night with Justice and Lucky.  Lucky just loves to tell his tail of his flight from Rhea Mae!   newyearbd yippee dance1 cockatiel

I remember this video, however, I didn't realize that it was a falcon feather that was used in the gravity experiment done on the moon...

Mariah let them borrow one of her feathers as long as they returned it when they got back to earth.   lol

Ely from 2008 is raising a family in central New York State.

Majesty from 2002 [one of the Toronto Five] is raising another family in Flint Michigan. She is also the last survivor from this hatch. Her parents were Ponce-Kingsley and Victoria.

Zanar from 2004 has a successful nest on the Ogdensburg bridge with four chicks.

Where is Ely?

Is Majesty Mariah's sister?

Zanar is Valiant's (Sabrina) mate?  Does anyone know about the 4 chicks?

Yes, Zanar is with Valiant.  I have notes at home about the 4 eyases-I'll post the details later...

I had heard from June who heard from the DEC lady in Ogdensburg that one of the eyases fell into the river before fledging.  Thankfully a man had been kayaking and came across the struggling youngster.  He reached his paddle out and the young falcon climbed up onto it and was brought to a rahabber.  Soon after the eyas was given a clean bill of health and returned to the nest area.  Another happy ending.   clap

Do you mean is Majesty Cabot-Sirocco's sister?  They have the same parents, Ponce-Kingsley and Victoria.  She would be Mariah's sister-in-law.

7168  Anything Else / Totally OT / Re: Snow!!!! on: 27-Dec-10, 08:29:12 AM
Snow report from the south:

8 inches Sunday morning in Taylorsville, NC - reports from Raleigh, NC weren't good, so since our path led us east, we didn't leave until 2:00 PM for our good condition 8-hour drive home.  The roads west were just about dry, but the got progressively wetter heading east.  I-40 East and I-85 North in NC had no traffic to speak of.  Durham to Richmond was not good - ICE closed I-85 south of Petersburg.  Rich was suffering because we were listening to the Giants fiasco on XM, but it did make the 1.25 hour stopage bearable.  East of DC (pretty much at Andrews Airforce Base and Rt 4) the snow came down!  Hard!  Fortunately, we were less than 20 miles from home.  Followed a truck that was smoking, stinking, and obviously lost almost all the way home (couldn't get around the fool - roads weren't good).  4x4 up the driveway (maybe 2-inches blowing hard) and we were home in a bit over 8.5 hours!  Amazing what no traffic can do!

Cold and sun is coming out from the Chesapeake today!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

It could have been worse.  You could have been listening to the Bills fiasco!   hurt

MAK and Sue are now in Columbus Ohio. Told her get her scope out and look for Falcons! The bus took off a bit late last night. They still have a full day of traveling.

Looks like that transmitter MAK is wearing is doing great!    lol
7170  Anything Else / Totally OT / Re: Snow!!!! on: 27-Dec-10, 07:49:15 AM
I got maybe 3-4 inches by my house.  The roads are clear but a little slick.  Took me an extra 15 minutes to get to work.  People who could walk here are calling out due to weather.  I just don't get it.

Ei

3-4 inches is like a light dusting here in Rochester!   lol

Everyone be safe out there!
