Goodbye Whitey the Squirrel.

You were different than the other squirrels, but they learned to respect you.  I'll miss you.   Sad

Thomas Hood
Born in London, England in 1799.  Died in 1845 at the age of 45.

"November in London is usually cool and overcast, and in Hood's day subject to frequent fog and smog."

I think this explains why he wrote this poem about November.  He probably didn't see many birds in November.

Nice thought for the day Anne.

Thanks, Carol, for the additional information, clarifying where the poet was coming from.  Guess I should have thought of that...  I'll remember next time.

That's what's nice about this group.  There's always opportunity to learn something new.   happy

A Bird

A bird came down the walk,
He did not know I saw;
He bit an angleworm in halves
And ate the fellow, raw.
And then he drank a dew
From a convenient grass,
And then hopped sidewise to the wall
To let a beetle pass.

She is a creature of habit.

Check spots: Xerox, HSBC, jail communication tower, Frontier communication tower, Times Square, Wilder Bldg, Mercury statue, both side old Changing Scenes Restaurant.

If she's not in any of those spots, and she usually is, widen the search:  Kodak Tower, Midtown, B&L, Library, then all the surrounding buildings (corners, ledges, roofs, window sills).

After you've watched for a while, your mind will tell you when something is out of place, like a lump that is either a pigeon, crow, hawk or falcon.

During this whole search, your eyes are to the sky, searching for the stream-lined flight of a very fast bird.

A huge female also seen in yesterday's blog.  She has a silver band on right leg.   Jacquie @ DEC digiscoped her and saw green showing through the feathers on the left leg.  So, this bird is from an eastern state but until we can get a better view and catch some numbers, it remains another Buffalo mystery.  Where is our Stella?   Shocked

More pix, etc. on blog!  Rochester - is this your bird?

Sage - Let us know if you get the numbers/letters on the band.  We'll let you know.  Hope Stella is ok.

November

by Thomas Hood

No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member--
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds,

November!

Kevin recited this poem to me every November 1st since 1979!  Needless to say, he didn't like November!  Now I take up the lament!

Patti, these are beautiful pictures!!!  I had to smile at Grissom and Mariah.  This was a year before I started watching in person but I do recall a dropped pigeon-- and a frustrated mama bird!

The pictures of Quiver are just wonderful!

Aaahh the memories.  Thank you Patty.

Not true. I'm normally in bed by 1:29.

Shaky's new book is all "One-liners"! Hey, he gets his point across!

He's got a million of them!

Terry said that when Flo came into Quiver's life, he was ecstatic.  He adored her.  I'm so glad he had that happiness in his life for a little while.   heart

 Sad

I'll never forget Quiver.  I can't remember exactly what year it was, but Wild Wings brought down a few of their birds for a Falcon gathering at the west end of the pedestrian bridge.  Matt B was holding Quiver.  As Quiver was joyfully shouting his very distinctive call, the Rochester Peregrines gathered above on the smoke stacks.  M&K and the young fledglings seemed to wonder, where was this pesky Kestrel?  This was during the time there were Kestrels nesting at the BeeBee Station and quite often we'd see them mix it up aka the infamous Kestrel runs.

Quiver didn't care.  He was a Kestrel and darn proud of it!  Fly Free Quiver!   heart
