You know - maybe it is just me and the Irish Experience... but I am not sure I would agree with putting signs up to signal the presence of PFs or any other BoP. It seems like an invitation to pigeon fanciers, egg collectors: "Target! This way!" It may be different when they nest on tall, inaccessible buildings
There is no way those nutjobs are getting up to the nest box on Times Square. Security is too tight. It's King Kong I worry about.

I would like to see something like these street light banners that you see everywhere in the city: They could be put up on all street lights within 2-3 blocks of Broad and Exchange, and they could easily be swapped out during the off-season for holiday banners, etc. EDIT: Notice that the one on the left has a peregrine color scheme. How would banners with these strangers on them promote the Rochester Falcons?

We went back up to Montezuma yesterday and when we arrived we saw a Peregrine in a snag. Similar to yesterday, but different spot. It was convenient that there was an Osprey there to give us a size reference. This one was definitely a male juvie and much lighter in color. While Don set up the camera, he flew off to stoop the shorebirds. We waited a long time, but he did not return.
We decided to stop at May's Pool to check for the Ibis and Little Blue Heron. As we were walking out to the platform I looked to the left and saw a Peregrine swoop in and harass the Grebes and shorebirds...Yeah, another Peregrine. This one looked like one of the Peregrines we saw on Saturday, definitely a female juvie and dark. She flew around a couple of times, but everyone else was looking at the Ibis who was in full view at the time.
Now I had two Peregrines and still no id pics. We spent a lot of time driving around the area looking for Peregrines but didn't have anymore sitings. We finally left the area about 5:30...but we'll be back up next weekend for a meeting at the Refuge. Suzanne
Come on Suzanne! The least you could do is get us ID's on these youngsters.

Maybe the females are more likely to stay because they are more concerned with guarding the nest box and making sure no other females take an interest in it?
Could definitely be a reason why one of them sticks around. It's not always the female at all nest sites. Good Observation Sue M.

Is it possible that males leave to warmer climates to mate and have another family? Could happen in those few months, NO? Just thinkin. Females too. Prob not. - Donna
Let's see. Let's use Kaver as an example. If Kaver left Rochester in late October , and returned in mid February (I think that was his timing), that would give him only 4 1/2 months away from Rochester..... Interesting question though. Wonder if it's ever happened.

As Donna is asking a question, I have one.
Some posts speak of Peregrine Falcons migrating... will "ours"? Or do they stay in ROC for the winter? Why do some go and some stay?
Thanks, Experts!
Last year Beauty stayed the winter and Archer migrated (the last watch report with him in it that I found on a quick look was 09/26). Why some do & some don't is really a good puzzle. I don't know that anyone has quite figured it out, but there has been some discussion on one of the Red tail blogs I follow-I'll have to do some research this weekend... I know it has to do with availability of prey. Some birds of prey will follow the migration of the prey birds or relocate to a warmer climate where prey is plentiful during the Winter months. Rochester has a lot of prey available all year round, so why Archer (and Kaver) migrates is a puzzle. In fact, every Winter, we seem to be home to multiple wintering Peregrines that find the Winters in Rochester a nice place to be. Maybe our Tiercels migrate because their prey are the smaller birds, which there might be less of during the Winter. While the females take the larger birds, like Pigeons that remain in the city all year. Just thinking out loud.

Same here BC...would love to know who they are....especially the (big) male.
On another note, as curious as I am lately, was wondering: if Mariah and Kaver met outside the Kodak area, would they recognize each other, say after 2 years?
I'd like to think so.

Breaking News! This just in from Brian H, Joyce and Kathy O. There are TWO Peregrines at Kodak Park. They've been standing in the pouring rain watching them for the past hour or so. Brian says that the Tiercel is very large and the female is REALLY big! Joyce will check her pics tonite to see if she got any pics of the bands. Stay tuned! This is very exciting! Is the one falcon Mariah? Annette - They don't believe either falcon is Mariah, sorry to say. They do think the female is the purple banded Falcon we've been seeing at KP for a few weeks now. This is the first time that two have been spotted there.
