Come on, Rochester! I'm waiting for the Starlings... I still haven't seen a one! When are you going to send them? Went to bed at 5am and couldn't sleep, too quiet! -- got up again at 6am...another sleepless night!! Please! Soon! If I don't get my one hour of sleep, I'm a terrible grump at the office!!
Anne in Toronto Hmmm, wonder if they make one of those nature soundtracks with the soothing sounds of Starlings.

Rochester Falcons / Falcon Watches / 3rd Falcon Visits Downtown Yesterday Afternoon - 9/7/10

Just a quick report of the brief battle over the pedestrian bridge.
Brian H and I witnessed a battle between Archer, Beauty and a Mystery Falcon. It mostly involved Beauty and the 3rd Falcon, very close in size. Archer got in a couple hits but stayed away from the two females. When they passed over us, we could hear ee-chupping fill the air.
They flew towards the Kodak Tower circling a few times before heading downtown. A&B landed on the top I-Beam of the old Changing Scenes Restaurant, while the 3rd Falcon flew over the Times Square Bldg, past it and turned back toward the north. She passed the Frontier Comm Twr, then headed towards the Kodak Tower passing behind it. Brian and I watched her until she flew out of sight heading north west, in the general direction of Kodak Park. Was this our purple banded visitor checking out A&B's territory?
After the other female left, Beauty entered the nest box and stayed there for a long time. Archer was out and about, keeping watch on the territory.
We'll keep watching.

Hey Anne, Like MAK said, we have lots and lots of Starlings over here. I'll be sure to shoo a few hundred of them across the lake. I was out for my daily hike today and once again realized that, although we have pigeons, sparrows and crows around as usual, we don't have any starlings! We haven't had any all Summer... Have any of you, in similar geographic areas, noticed this? Are any of you hoarding starlings? I know they aren't the most popular birds, but their absence leaves the early morning sounding, well, quiet! I know, I know -- what am I complaining about? It's just that it is too quiet -- I can't sleep! Honest! *grin*
Just wondering...

Beautiful pics of the purple banded Falcon Joyce!
MAK, Dana and I kept watch in the area most of the late morning, afternoon. No sightings.
She is a gorgeous Peregrine. I know we'll get lucky one of these days and get a positive ID. Will she remain in the area? Will we finally get a 2nd nest site? Only time will tell.
