I have to admit that Brian was the one to ID the mink. I wouldn't have had a clue. Although I did get a picture minus the head, due to the mink's head and fish were under a log. Brian told me that they are currently protected. I really don't know that much about them. I'll have to do some research.

Speaking of fish. Brian and I saw a mink fishing on the river next to the Broad St. Bridge yesterday. Imagine our surprise when he pulled an approx. 2 lb, small mouth bass up onto the rocks and dispatched it. He/she then dragged it into what looks like a small den made of big bundles of sticks. Very cool!

Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Kakking

You guys are CR "ACK" N me up! OK so a Juvie alarm is Ack and an adult is Kak! Very interesting. B"ack" to the "ack"tion. I think it's a multi-used verbalization. Fright or maybe surprise (by the man on the tower). Hungry (as in feed me now mom and dad!). Attention (here I am!). I'm not sure a juvie has more than one sound. I'll have to pay more attention. I do know that not all juvies sound the same. A few years ago, one of M&K's young had a very, very whinny/tinny sound to their cry. You always knew when this little one was coming.

We talked about this tonite. I consider kakking, an alarm call by the adults. KAK!KAK!KAK!KAK! Very loud. Ee-chupping, more a conversational vocalization. We decided (Jeanne, Brian, MAK and I) that a longer drawn out, whiny, higher pitched, aaaacccckkkk, aaaacccckkkk, aaaacccckkkk is the juvie cry.

Rochester Falcons / Rfalconcam Website News / Announcing the Debut of the Dale Pesmen Eyas Design Merchandise!

Announcing the Debut of the Dale Pesmen Eyas design.Dale is a very talented artist and a friend to the Rochester Falconcam for many years. I absolutely love the drawings/paintings of "our" Falcons and eyases that she has done over the past few years. I've fallen in love with all of them. But there is one that I absolutely adore, her picture of a fluffy white eyas with a feather clutched in its' big yellow feet, eyes looking up at the camera inside the nestbox. I asked Dale if the Rochester Falconcam could use this design on T-Shirts and other merchandise to raise money. She gave me an immediate, "ABSOLUTELY"! After hard work by the Merchandise Team, we are now pleased to announce the debut of this Dale Pesmen design. There are three different feathers available; bluejay, cardinal or waxwing. Please check it out at this link and remember that a portion of everything you purchase will go to the Rochester Falconcam to help keep the cameras running. http://www.zazzle.com/rfalconcam/gifts?cg=196994477429059086Now the featured item on the Rochester Falconcam site. THANK YOU DALE!!!

Hmmm, interesting and unusual behaviour for a juvenile. Can't remember if I've ever heard a juvie kak before or act aggressively towards a person. Whine and cry, yes. Seems more the behaviour of an adult when a human may be too close to a young one. Very curious. We definitely learn something new about them all the time. That's one of the reasons I love to watch them.

Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcons News / Re: Jemison "Doing Well", More X-Rays Scheduled
|
on: 04-Aug-10, 10:55:32 AM

Any word on how Jamison is doing? He was supposed to get new x-rays a week or so ago but we still haven't heard how that came out. Is he/she healing? Is he/she in the flight cage yet? Any news would be welcome.
Last I heard, the x-rays showed that the bone was healing and calcifying and that Jemison was in a small cage that he can move around in and flap his wings. After that, he would be moved to a large flight cage if all went well. We're waiting for more information. Hopefully soon.

Before it got too dark, Dana reports that both Archer and Beauty are on the Kodak Tower. When I left at 8:15 pm, Callidora was on the Frontier comm tower platform. She took off heading east.
