8101  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Pictures from the Rfalconcam cameras on: 27-Apr-10, 07:49:47 AM

We're down to three eggs.  I did notice yesterday afternoon that one of the eggs was dented or dimpled, so I'm not surprised that we're down to three this morning.  More than likely that egg was not viable and Archer and Beauty knew this.  Being first time parents, this is not unusual.  Remember that only two hatched in 2002, the first year that Mariah and Kaver were a pair.

Since it is a solar battery, will it continue to transmit signals after it falls off and will someone retrieve the transmitter to be sure it is ONLY the transmitter that is stationary.  Has a transmitter been found & retrieved before .... after falling off??

The transmitter should continue to send signals, if it's in a location that receives sunlight.

When Skye's transmitter kept transmitting from the same location, we weren't sure if her transmitter had fallen off or not.  It was just west of Toronto, so Mark Nash was kind enough to offer to go look for the transmitter.  Sadly, Mark found Skye.  She was deceased, possibly due to predation.  Skye was still a juvenile and the mortality rates for young Peregrines in their first year is extremely high.  Mark was able to collect the transmitter and it was returned.

Quest has made it to adulthood with her transmitter.  By all accounts she is an accomplished hunter and we certainly know that the transmitter hasn't slowed her down at all!

and then we have Rhea Mae and Tiago's little one that tried to escape by bus a couple year's ago.  A bus headed for Niagara Falls!  Thankfully Linda was on Watch.  She stopped the bus from leaving and called Mark & Marion Nash.  The little would-be traveler was scooped up off of the top of the bus and returned to the Sheraton nest ledge. clap thumbsup 2thumbsup

How much longer can we expect her transmitter to work?

I think her 2 years is almost up. May get a few more weeks/months out of it. I guess after 2 years, one would think she'd settle. She'll have to be recaptured and have some new batteries put in...(if they could ever keep up with her). She's a wild woman.  clap 2thumbsup

I don't think it's a matter of the battery running out, it's a solar battery.  I do believe that the harness is designed to fall off after a couple years.  It will definitely be interesting to see how much longer we'll receive transmitter readings on Quest's travels.  She certainly does move around alot!

Definite problems with the Sheraton Cameras.  Received the following two emails from Linda Woods:

Hi Carol,
No luck with rebooting, I think we may not have internet anymore. Just as I got to the nest, they did a hand off of the nest, and I clearly saw all four eggs.  Perhaps next week at the earliest for a hatch. I'll have to check everyday.  Rhea Mae and Tiago are doing a good job.

Hi There,
A quick check on the Sheraton and Tiago was doing his time on the eggs. They like to keep tight under the camera, so even seeing them live can be difficult.  But I saw no sign of hatch this morning. No egg shells yet.
SOON. - Linda W.

Linda attempted to reboot the system but was unable to.  Hopefully it will be back on line soon.

Thanks MAK!   happy

I heard afterwards that the Tiercel's name is Cade after Thomas Cade.  What a beautiful bird!   heart

You did do a nice job Carol! June did too! Can I get an autograph sometime?

Lou

PS I believe the falcon that was shared is "Kade" with a "K". At least, that's what Dana from BBRO shared with me. You're right that it is named after Tom Cade, the founder of the Peregrine Fund.  Dana also shared that Emma, the female that was shown last year, passed away this past year.

Thanks Lou!  Very sad news about Emma's passing.  I never had a chance to meet her.  So it's Kade with a "K"?  Cool name, no matter how it's spelled.   thumbsup

You did a wonderful job, Carol!!!  And what a perfect name for a peregrine!  We owe much to Tom Cade for his work restoring the population of peregrines!  Cade is a beautiful bird!!!!!  So exciting to see a peregrine up close!

Thanks Jeanne and all the Watchers that came to the presentation.  Let's see, there was Kathy O, Lisa McK, Joyce, Brian H, Jeanne, Dan S, Dawn, Susan C, Dana, Lou, MAK and her friend (I'm so sorry I forgot your friends name!).

June did a wonderful job with the first part of the presentation, explaining Rochester's part in helping to bring back the Peregrine Falcon.  It's so sad to think that we almost lost this magnificent creature.   Sad

My part was introducing the new Rochester Peregrines, Archer and Beauty and sharing the new Falcon Watch area, which is much different than what we were used to at the Kodak Tower.  The room was packed and hopefully we'll get some new volunteers for this year's Fledge Watch.

At the end of the presentation, we had a surprise visitor, Kade, an absolutely gorgeous Peregrine Falcon Tiercel.

As we were getting ready to leave, we received word that a Merlin had been captured and banded at the Hawk banding station.  The Merlin soon arrived, an adult female.  We were able to see her for just a few moments before the Braddock Bay volunteer released her.  She was off!  Too quick to get a take-off picture.  What a wonderful way to end our day at the Birds of Prey Day at Braddock Bay.   clap

I was at Frontier Field last night and on the wire overhead was what I thought was a falcon, eating his (her) dinner of a small bird. Possible? Many at the ball game saw it and some caught pictures, but I didn't have my camera or binoculars (rats!)

Hello CarolKat.   wave

I've seen Kestrels in the area around Kodak Office, but it certainly could have been a Peregrine.  Although Archer and Beauty seem to be eating their meals closer to the Times Square bldg.  Thanks for reporting!
