Is this a hawk? I thought maybe an Owl! He said it made a horrific sound! I blew it up a bit. Not sure what it is!

Not that I have a clue about ID... but this comment about a "horrific sound" does not make me think of a hawk. Correct me here... but don't they usually make high-pitched "kee-kee-kee" sounds? I always think these are quite delicate sounds, in spite of their power, size (in some cases) and strength.

That's my two-cents-worth. No - wait - this is Ireland, and we are broke... so that's my 648 Euros' worth...

!!! Escaped Peregrine Near Liftbridge?
January 30, 2011 - Burlington - Lift Bridge
Frank Butson Reports:

On Sunday I recieved a photo of a Peregrine Falcon that was taken at the liftbridge. Clearly not one of the resident pair,it appears to have tethers or a leash on. Local CPF volunteers have been notified and the word is out to Burlington/Hamilton birders to keep their eyes open for this bird. Please contact CPF with sightings of this bird. There is a good chance it is able to hunt on its own and a chance it could free itself from the gear, but also a chance that it could get tangled. Any further news will be reported.  Shocked

One of the reasons I always worry about falconry birds. Maybe they are happy, but still...

Well done for finding that, Donna! I knew this 2011 season was on the horizon and I must find out ways in which we can do something productive. I do have a few pieces of info but have to get them organised in a sensible format. Thanks so much for highlighting this dreadful practice - which, sadly, is also taking place in Cyprus. I have some info on that but could not bear to post the photos.

Last year was horrific, I hope this year it can be minimized or stopped!

Old habits and sheer stupidity.

I've got a frog in my throat... This burrowing owl was left with a huge pair of frog's legs dangling from its mouth when it tried to eat breakfast in one go. The bird struggled to gulp down its prey as it stood in a grassy field. Photographer Michael Cenci took this photo while on holiday near Cape Coral, Florida, US. He was delighted with the picture, which he calls "Frogleg Moustache" because the legs look like a handlebar 'tache.

Anyone remember "Froggie the Gremlin"???

Is that Andy Divine in the clip? Aka as "Jingles P. Jones"?? (Just saw him in "Liberty Valance". Splendid John Wayne/James Stewart vehicle.) They don't make stuff like that any more...

From the Buster Brown show?

Yes! Yes!

"My name's Buster Brown... I live in a shoe. That's my dog Tighe... look for him in there too!"

Amazing what a person remembers...esp "Plunk you magic twanger, Froggie!" (One hesitates to post such a thing in these knowing times...)
