So what part did you audition for, Shaky? (And don't tell me The Lamp!)

Ralphie's old man, of course.

Mother: All right. Now, are you ready to tell me where you heard that word?
Ralphie as Adult: [narrating] Now, I had heard that word at least ten times a day from my old man. He worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium; a master.

Ahhhhhhh...

Mother: No, you'll shoot your eye out.
Ralphie as Adult: Oh no! It was a classic, mother BB-gun block. "You'll shoot your eye out!" That deadly phrase honored many times by hundreds of mothers was not surmountable by any means known to Kid-dom, but such as my mania, my desire for a Red Ryder carbine, that I immediately began to rebuild the dike.

So what part did you audition for, Shaky? (And don't tell me The Lamp!)

I guess the best thing for people like me is to offer a big round of applause to those who are able to help. Thanks to all of you!!

GEVA presented the stage version two Christmases ago. My family was a 25-strong contingent - including Master Owen, who just ate it up. Another of our traditions: The film plays in the background every single Christmas Eve at the big Cousins' Gift Exchange. The request goes out every year: Who's bringing the cookies? And who's bringing "A Christmas Story"?

I keep waiting for my 7-year-old nephew Owen to do this!

Okla. boy rescued after tongue gets stuck on pole

(AP) WOODWARD, Okla. - In a scene straight from the movie "A Christmas Story," an 8-year-old Oklahoma boy got his tongue stuck to a metal pole after he licked it on a dare.

Officials say when rescue crews arrived Tuesday morning, the boy was standing on his tiptoes, trying to wriggle his frozen tongue free from a stop sign pole across the street from Woodward Middle School.

Paramedics were able to help the boy by pouring water on his tongue. Once free, the boy told officials he got stuck after his brother dared him to lick the pole.

The boy was taken to a Woodward hospital for treatment.

The scene was similar to one in "A Christmas Story," a 1983 movie adapted from Jean Shepard’s memoir of a boy in the 1940s.

I knew you would not let me down, Donna! Yes, do make that contact, as this is one of the most amazing natural history series I have seen in ages. I missed it earlier in the month, but discovered it was being repeated - I was hooked! Most of the bears' saga is revealed in the Forum posts, but that will not take from the drama - and dramatic it is!

Well, duuuh on me - I did not realise there was such a string of posts already about Lily and Hope. Still... that TV series is splendid and well worth a look... tho perhaps you have all seen it by now. I should get out more... or stay in less??

Ooooh! I just saw a BBC programme about Lily and Hope! I am not sure of the title, but I think it could be "The Bear Family and Me". It is amazing! Maybe you will get it on PBS, or perhaps National Geographic... but do watch for it, as it is something else. I will try to find a link later, but no doubt Donna will beat me to it! Go, Girl!

I am useless at doing videos - even worse at getting Big Mac to play them for me. But I managed to get this silly little piece...

"Screech Owl who was caught and carried around by the wing by a dog. Amazingly enough, there were no broken bones. He is missing his tail feathers and had a small puncture wound on his wing. He is recovering in our ICU. When he is well enough he will be moved into a large outdoor flight cage with other Screech Owls."

Our rough collie, Ceili, was wandering around the "acreage" one day when she came dancing up, as usual. But... something did not look right. Sure enough - she had a Pied Wagtail in her mouth. Not hurting it. Not biting down... just carrying it around! I called her over, made her sit, and I extracted the bird without protest from her. No bother, no probs... just very bright little bird eyes looking at me. He/She was fine and flew off, none the worse for the unscheduled trip.
wow What a good dog!

She was! And still much-missed. Never knew a dog with such a sense of humour.

(FYI - "CEILI" is pronounced "KAY-lee" - the Irish word for "a dance".)

Following the visit of some top Chinese official to the UK (he is apparently being wined-and-dined throughout all of Europe right now...), Edinburgh Zoo will soon play host to two Giant Pandas. (Imagine 5 years of diplomatic negotiations to bring this about!) This piece has a bit of the Desmond Morrises about it in places, but still worth a glance.
