3646  Anything Else / Totally OT / Bobbie's "Big Ick!" Award goes to... on: 22-Dec-10, 09:39:08 AM
THE GILDED TURKEY!

Never mind the article... have a look at this sucker.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/food/2010/11/stefan-gates-golden-turkey.shtml

I think I will go for the bologna, thanks...

Slainte!

(Anyone else want to take part in the "Big Ick Challenge"? Please do! The winner will receive a free lunch at the Highland Diner when I am home in Spring... Who could resist?! The judges' decision will be final - tho the judges have yet to be selected. Nor have the rules been established - they may change as the contest proceeds. The winner should not become complacent, as he/she may discover that the prize has gone to someone else while they are trying to claim it. Gloating will disqualify.)

I recently worked on a publishing project re planting winter food crops for birds... an easy and cost-effective measure which could be done anywhere. This is the RSPB's report, with other links.

Whoa, what an amazing story jeanne and a great mom she is. See, there's also a lot of good in this world.  clap  crying

Yup. And a lot of that good is on this Forum, as I have learned!

I had previously posted that I hoped I would not have to say "I despair!" one more time this year. Seems those hopes were in vain. What could they be thinking... or not. Doesn't your heart just break?
3650  Anything Else / Totally OT / Re: Mole in place at the Archives on: 22-Dec-10, 06:56:32 AM
Ohhhh, no... I am undone! Because I will soon be hooked on it. This site is splendid, Paul and Mary! I am bookmarking it immediately. (Gotta say, tho... those Ex Moles got my "Big Ick" rating... paperbag)

Ah ladies, I certainly can relate to all this.  But since mine has passed, I'd give anything to have this problem again.  Be thankful for what you have.

Oh indeed, I am more than thankful! Maddening as he is, he is also, as my posting said, "My Hero"!

I hope you can remember the silly moments... I do.

Is this genetic? In their DNA? Like not asking for directions? Hey, Donna, does Rod possibly know Mr Donna??!! KINDRED! Why, I could be shopping with Mr Donna and not even notice the difference!
3653  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: More bird-feeding ideas on: 21-Dec-10, 09:17:04 AM
Was watching BBC news last night and the reporter from here was stuck in England and may not get home for Christmas. You guys are getting hammered. Poor birds, I feel so bad for them. Aafke said she's getting snow, snow and more snow. Whoa!

We are getting walloped here! The snow started coming down again last nite and by the morning we were covered...

Of course there was NO WAY I was driving in it, but My Hero (Rod) figured we could get to Wicklow to do The Big Shop, as conditions are meant to get even worse (the airport is closed again), and it looks like another 4-5 inches are expected. People are actually sleeping in the airport... sure am glad I am home!

Anyway, The Hero digs us out and I call Barbara (a neighbor up the lane), and she comes shopping with us too. Rod drops me off at the supermarket and takes B into WIcklow to get some stuff, then they swing back for me. I say "Hurrah!", because I will not have Rod on my butt while shopping... grabbing the cart, wandering off, asking endless questions. Well, I get 2/3 done and in he comes... grabs the cart, asks whether I have the asparagus - I tell him we are NOWHERE NEAR the vegetables yet... but he hogs the cart and keeps asking "Where to now?" I want to tell him "TO HELL IN A HAND-BASKET!" but I curb my tongue.

But we finish eventually - tho I do not have quite a few things I was going to do throughout the week. I swear to God - when and if this marriage ever ends, it will be at a supermarket!!

And THEN - now, here is the kicker! He rushes me, gets our stuff in the car, and then he SITS THERE as we have to wait for Barbara, which I SAID we would have to do!

Right - I feel so much better!

Other than that - we still have no tree... I hate to mention this.
3654  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Ireland's Newgrange and the Winter Solstice on: 21-Dec-10, 09:08:51 AM
One of my favourite places in Ireland is Newgrange. And it is of particular importance at the Winter Solstice. Have a look at this piece from the BBC... and then hit the other links for more info. A magical place!

On other years, they have had video links, but I am not sure about today as there was heavy cloud cover... and thus no visible lunar eclipse either.

Those lucky enough to be in the tumulus at the Solstice are selected by a lottery... needless to say, I have never "got lucky"!

This RSPB website obviously mentions UK/Irish birds, but I think it translates well to other wintry locations. Here, we are getting another Arctic blast, so feeding the birds is a top issue and is being mentioned on most radio programmes today. We managed to get down our hill today for The Big Shop, but had we waited longer, we would have been sorry! Where's that Irish snowplow and the guy with the shovel?!

Found this on the RSPB site... something fun to do with children.

(I assume they mean the feeder is made from recycled material... not the birds..)

Ours is a rat-rat, Dale... you want it?

rat-rats I like to see, not own. I don't so much like seeing them near things I own, either.
But thank you for your generous offer

Why, you are so welcome, Dale! After all... 'Tis a time for giving...
3659  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: Garden Bird Tip of the Day on: 21-Dec-10, 07:46:11 AM
- Forgotten apples looking past their best in the fruit bowl? Make up for those forgotten good intentions by cutting them in half and putting them out on the ground - the blackbirds and others will thank you for it.

I have been meaning to send that tip for ages, Donna! Thanks! Also - we put a half apple on a pole (sturdy, and with a baffle... because of the Rat-Bird!) just outside our kitchen window. The critters that appear! I will see if I can get Rod to do a pic and will then send to Donna...

Oh, you hammer a nail into the top of the pole and stick the apple on that... gottit??
3660  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: lunar eclipse tonight (early-early tomorrow morning) on: 21-Dec-10, 05:19:41 AM
I believe that totality was 3:17 AM in the DC area - I caught my first glimpse at 3:22 AM and watched the moon grow all the way into Arlington.

What luck - and on the day of the Solstice too... what are the odds? Here - nada! I repeat - boo-hoo!
