Hey, you Watchers - mind yourselves driving in those conditions!

Oh that's so gross! They should have let it burn after that!

Cannot imagine why they didn't - that was also my first thought.

Thought for Today (Appropriate for a rainy day in Rochester!)

"When life rains on your parade

.....bring out the slip'n'slide!"

I walked into a store yesterday (during the rain) and did my own Slip N Slide! I don't normally do "splits" but can NOW! Ouch!

One of my sisters and I - the Old Cougars! - are besotted fans of Rafael Nadal (He lets us call him Rafi). Whenever he has had one of his injuries, we always offer to "kiss it better". We are not making that offer this time - but DO hope you recover from those splits, Donna! (Is there a place for you on "Amerca's Got Talent", perhaps?)

Oh! First thing I should have said (I heard this somewhere and howled...) - You lawyered-up yet??

It's always wonderful to read about a species that manages to get the jump on us. This is one such story. I was privileged, long ago, to be in their company on Puffin Island off the southwest coast. The noises they make in the darkness are truly bone-chilling. Being utterly incapable of negotiating the precarious cliffs, with nesting burrows for Puffins and Manx Shearwaters as well, I did have a useful niche - cook.

The DEC has been notified of a possible pair at KP and we'll keep them updated on what's going on through the Fall and Winter.

There were two nest boxes at KP at one time, both on buildings on the east end of the plant on Lake Ave.  They were both taken down by Kodak.

I'm really glad to hear that the Kodakers are excited about having the falcons there.  Last weekend one of the guards stopped and asked us about the falcons.  Word is spreading.

Such good news, Carol P. And another huge "thank you" to the Watchers for spreading the word on behalf of all of us! I will be watching anxiously re more nest boxes.

Have a nice day!

great northern diver?

I have decided (therefore it must be true!) that it is not a diver...

This makes me sick to my stomach

It is sickening, Jeanne. Which is why I am trying to keep it to the front of people's thinking. There are obviously exceptions, but by and large, "our" NA birds have half a chance. Many birds that migrate over the Med area do not. Whatever you and anyone else can do to register your protest - or to support organisations like BirdLife -  please do it! And unless someone on the Forum tells me to stop it, I hope I can continue to post on this vital subject.

Well come on people!  We need some more guesses. gum

Ok. I am going to make a "derriere" of myself and say Barnacle Goose. (Tho it could be a Canada Goose... or Brent Goose... or indeed any black and white goose.) The fact that it is dabbling and not diving is my only clue, apart from the colour... and the fact that the front could just as easily be the back... had to figure which way the feathers were going and am not sure I have that.

There.

Still... fun!

wow beautiful bird. clap What is birdjam?

From the context, it seems to be some sort of sound lure system - play the tape, lure the bird.
3942  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Malta slaughter continues, in spite of Raptor Camp efforts on: 04-Oct-10, 11:19:42 AM
A press release from BirdLife Malta on Friday. I don't know whether to put my head on the desk and cry, or just go out there and bang heads... don't think I could take the useless sadness of it all, tho. This kind of thing needs cool heads - and more than a little bravery. Neither of which I possess.

So not an Auk sp. at all??

Looking at that big tummy makes me wonder about a goose sp... but what's it doing in that habitat? Could just be a pond on a windy day, of course... (and really, Bobbie... geese do migrate, so who knows where you might see them!)
3945  Rochester Falcons / Falcon Watches / Re: Twitter on: 04-Oct-10, 10:56:18 AM
Bobbie Archer seems to be on a later schedule, he leaves later and then comes back later in the spring. (well later than Kaver  wub2 did anyway) I wish he wouldn't go, but at least on the bright side he doesn't have to fly anywhere near Malta.  scared blue

And so say all of us, BC! "Our" birds are lucky in so many ways...

(I am still fidgety about Archer leaving in good time!)
