Looked like a starling to me. They like to walk along the railing on the Broad St. bridge in the morning and eat the little spiders. And let me tell ya there's plenty of them! I don't mind them but Dan gets creeped out by them. Can you say arachnophobia!!! Am I ever happy it was not a pigeon... phew!

In my way off-center way, I wanted to drop stuff in the pool hole for future generations Great idea, Janet - you shoulda done that! I think I will just leave things under the bed... easier than actually digging, but with the same overall effect...

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — Flo the chimpanzee bounds about her enclosure, hurls a rubber ball, then stares quizzically at the New Mexico green chili pepper that will be her morning snack. It has been a long time since Flo was on exhibit at the Memphis Zoo, even longer since she learned to smoke cigarettes during a stint with the circus. Most recently, she was a research chimpanzee here in New Mexico, part of an expansive biomedical testing program for hepatitis C and HIV. At the moment, though, she is out of a job — but perhaps not for long. Flo and the 185 other chimpanzees who live at the Alamogordo Primate Facility at Holloman Air Force Base have not been research subjects for nearly a decade — part of an agreement between the National Institutes of Health and the military, which prohibits using the animals for biomedical tests on the base... But recently, the health institute decided it wanted to use the chimp colony for medical research again... http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/02/us/02chimps.html?ref=todayspaper

Could not get the sound to work, Ei, but I read the piece. Yes, a Driveway Moment. Another piece from that sad time - one I had never heard of but which the younger ones knew - was a story that was read in full on NPR last Memorial Day - called "The Things they Carried'. I never moved for an hour.
I found this story by that name...looks like a book I might like to read... Perhaps what was broadcast on NPR was a long extract... As it took an hour, I assumed it to be a short story. Whatever it is, one can feel the awful heat, the terrible loneliness. It's rough and raw and at times even funny. It will leave a lasting effect.

I heard the first part of this story last evening on NPR and the second part this morning-one more to go (missed when it's scheduled)... All things Considered part 1 Morning Edition part 2... One of those stories where you can't get out of the car until it's done, kleenex in hand... Good ole NPR and their Driveway Moments, huh? Love 'em! Could not get the sound to work, Ei, but I read the piece. Yes, a Driveway Moment. Perhaps it's time for me to retell the story of my Sister's Pigeon. Cyrus was one of a clutch at a bird rehab where my Sister volunteered. She adopted him, and he was her spoiled pet for 21 years, minus those from 5 through 12, when he was in parts unknown, and given up for lost after taking off through an opened window. When he returned seven years later, my Sister was at work, and her husband called her to tell her Cyrus was back. Unbelieving, she rushed home, and he flew right to her and buried his face in her neck. He died peacefully in his sleep in her arms at 21 years old. Carol WV [/quote]
Carol, what a lovely tale! It's fun to think of Cyrus out there in the wide world, only to decide one day - for himself! - that he wanted to come "home". My sweet father-in-law once had a rescue pigeon called Twit (because that's exactly what he was!). He loved playing games with an old cloth over his head. When one of us would whip it off, he would go back to it and try to pick it up, bringing it to one of his fans so the game could proceed. Funny little lad. And was there ever wailing when he went to that Great Pigeon Coop in the Sky... did not last as long as Cyrus but certainly long enough for us to miss him.
