??? Hayseed?! I need notes or something to help with your language Bobbi. How does this happen when I hear that you are from Rochester? : MAK, I think this is because I have now spent more time living on Erin's Green Isle than I did in Rochester. Plus - and as you may have noted - I love language, the use of words... no wonder I work in publishing! On "hayseed", tho... this we used as a common parlance among my ROC gang... meant anyone who was unpolished, dim, not up with the modern way of doing things... (Doris Day in "Calamity Jane"?? The Dukes of Hazard? Ellie-May in "The Beverley Hillbillies"?) Sorrreeeee if I continue to confuse!!

Hey, Carol! Do I know your friend? Our place is a "tip" too! (too much Forum watching...)
Once... when I was not long on this island and still getting used to the "new language"... I complimented a girl on her lovely vest... and she immediately began checking to see if her underwear was showing...
My very favorite is the exuberant Yank at a proper London reception, who extended his hand and gushed, "Hi, I'm Randy!" Carol Heaven forgive me, but a friend of mine (Irish) married (short-lived) an American chap named Randy... shoulda been her first hint... and you shoulda heard the comments during the toasts! My own posh faux-pas was at a la-dee-da wedding here where a tray of drinks (served by a waitress!) was proferred. I said I would wait for "the red", to which she replied: "Madam, it's champagne!" What a hayseed!

She preens She watches She left at 7:17 and went to Mercury's foot. When I was introducing my (at the time) young niece to the joys of birding, I would describe as best I could what they were doing, why... One day, she was watching the personal hygiene activities of something on a wire and came back with the reply: "Oh, look, Aunt Bobbie! He is having a prune!"

Tam O'Shanter - Tam O'Shanter is Robert Burns' most famous narrative poem about the problems of bumping into witches at Halloween, particularly when under the influence of drink! The neighbourhood takes its name from the Tam O'Shanter Golf Course (Wikipedia article on Tam O'Shanter-Sullivan, retrieved in May 2008).
While Donna is quite correct about the origin of "Tam O'Shanter," I associate it with a hat of the same name (and origin). They were popular for little girls back in the 30s and 40s (check Shirley Temple) and I had one that I was quite proud of. Fancy new things were a rarity during the war years and that is probably why I remember it. That, and the neat name. Kapi in VT as in this Kapi? Aw, rats! I was gonna say "Let's play!" and get someone to "Name that Actor", but I note it says who it is in the jpeg title. ( I knew without reading it, of course...)

Right, MAK! Dustbin = garbage can.
Ain't we quaint??
I have a UK Friend on a Cat List, who recently referred to her house as a "tip". The context was quite funny For the uninitiated, the tip is where the dustbins' contents end up... A lot of us on the cat lists, several from the UK and Australia/New Zealand, have a lot of fun with the different meanings of common words across the water. Carol Hey, Carol! Do I know your friend?
