She does AND I know people who still use those things! Shocked

WHAT?! You mean we are NOT supposed to use them??? (This is the kind of thing we can get while we wait...) :Smiley

We're down to three eggs.  I did notice yesterday afternoon that one of the eggs was dented or dimpled, so I'm not surprised that we're down to three this morning.  More than likely that egg was not viable and Archer and Beauty knew this.  Being first time parents, this is not unusual.  Remember that only two hatched in 2002, the first year that Mariah and Kaver were a pair.

Oh my and oh dear! I know we are all sad about this. But wasn't it amazing that Archer and Beauty knew that something was amiss?  We watch and we wonder - but they know. They are shaping up to be Parents Extraordinaire. Perhaps someone could provide us with a bit of "science" here (not that it changes anything, but it could help us understand)... such as - How do they know? What is the trigger?

Bee 'alarm' scares elephants away

Elephants produce a rumbling alarm call that warns of the threat of approaching bees, scientists have found. The researchers also discovered that the elephants retreated when a recording of the call was played - even when there were no bees nearby.

The study was led by Lucy King of the University of Oxford and the charity Save the Elephants.
She believes that such calls may be an "emotional response" to a threat and a way to co-ordinate group movements. Ms King explained: "We discovered elephants not only flee from the buzzing sound, but make a unique rumbling call, as well as shaking their heads."

Despite their immense size and thick hides, elephants are afraid of bees. Adults can be stung around their eyes or inside their trunks, whilst calves could potentially be killed by a swarm of stinging bees as they have yet to develop a thick protective skin.

Reducing conflict

The discovery, reported in the journal Plos One, was part of an ongoing project in Kenya, which aims to reduce conflict between elephants and farmers.

As agriculture expands in Kenya, elephants are forced into smaller and smaller ranges, and the animals often enter the farms that are now in areas where they once roamed.

"Farmers will do anything to keep their crops and families safe from damage, and unfortunately records of shootings, spearings and poisonings of elephants are on the increase," Ms King wrote on the University of Oxford's website.

"Our project work is trying to come up with a low-tech deterrent method that will not only keep elephants away from fields of crops, but will also enhance the income of farmers through the sale of bee products." Such a recording could prove a useful and humane elephant deterrent, the team said.

and then we have Rhea Mae and Tiago's little one that tried to escape by bus a couple year's ago.  A bus headed for Niagara Falls!  Thankfully Linda was on Watch.  She stopped the bus from leaving and called Mark & Marion Nash.  The little would-be traveler was scooped up off of the top of the bus and returned to the Sheraton nest ledge. clap thumbsup 2thumbsup

The Stone Owl laid its second egg but if you look at the 2nd camera, there's an egg on the floor outside the box.  I just saw a Pigeon in this area and that egg probably belongs to her.  Shocked

NO idea how I missed this - but that amazing osprey in Scotland laid her third egg (total = 58!) on 20 April. WHAT is she like! bravo

The site also contains a fascinating blog, which I will put together (edited) when I get a chance... or check it out at

Apparently another osprey may be in the vicinity, as today's post is "Three's a Crowd!"

Thank you Bobbie! There may be hope yet!

That's pretty much all we have, Donna - hope! From the piece I posted, it does seem as if a modicum of sense - not to mention sensitivity and downright basic human decency! - might prevail. How much do such things dehumanise us all.

More info re this from today's ASPCA e-News... Further comment from me would not be helpful, I fear, esp in reference to 'frivolous cases'. Better to check the ASCPA website to see what we can do. There are also other topics on the site which are worthy of note...

Supreme Court Nixes Crush Act as Unconstitutional

In its Tuesday ruling on U.S. v. Stevens, the U.S. Supreme Court permanently struck down the “Crush Act,” a 1999 federal law banning the creation, sale and possession of materials depicting genuine acts of animal cruelty. In the majority opinion written by Chief Justice Roberts, the court attributed its decision to the law being both unconstitutional and overbroad.

The Crush Act was designed to stop the commerce of crush videos and other depictions of illegal acts of animal cruelty “in which a living animal is intentionally maimed, mutilated, tortured, wounded, or killed.” The act depicted did not have to be illegal where it was filmed, only where the resulting product was sold. Stevens, who marketed videos of dog and hog-dog fighting—some of which he filmed overseas—was the first person convicted under the Crush Act.

In addition to violating free speech rights, the Court asserted that, due to its overbroad language, the Crush Act could be used to prosecute frivolous cases. An example it cited was the sale of hunting videos: hunting is illegal in Washington, D.C., so under the Crush Act, someone selling a hunting video in D.C. would be breaking the law, even if the video was filmed in a state where hunting is legal. When he signed the bill into law, President Clinton recognized this potentially sticky issue and requested the Justice Department to limit prosecutions to “wanton cruelty to animals designed to appeal to a prurient interest in sex.” However, in the opinion of the Court, “We would not uphold an unconstitutional statute merely because the Government promised to use it responsibly.”

Although this verdict is disappointing, there is good news on the horizon. The Supreme Court left the door wide open for new, more narrowly drafted legislation to specifically target crush and animal fighting videos—and there is already interest on Capitol Hill in getting such legislation passed. The ASPCA will gladly work with Congress to draft new language that can withstand tests of constitutionality to provide law enforcement with the tools to effectively combat extreme animal abuse.

Certainly this is not what Thomas Jefferson et al. had in mind... We have to take "...under God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance, but we can do this?! One despairs!

My mom, whose gardening skills I inherited (ahem), loved lilacs.  For several years, she pulled out this one "weed" but later found out it was a lilac (must have been transplanted from a neighbor's yard).  After she found this out, one of our neighbors asked to weed the yard (a woman in her 80s who loved doing this and needed more than her yard).  Sure enough, the lilac got pulled again. Mom gave up.

Reminds me of when we had the teeniest of gardens in Dublin years ago... and I asked Rod to pull the weeds... NEVER thinking I had to identify these. When I got home, all my herbs and vegetables were on the compost heap! Most, tho, were rescued successfully... Ah, memories!
