RSPB fake nests aim to lure ospreys to southern England

Ospreys were extinct in the UK for four decades before returning in the 1950s
Conservationists are attempting to lure rare ospreys to new nesting sites in southern England using polystyrene models of the birds in "show homes".

Osprey breeding grounds are centred on Scotland and the RSPB [Royal Society for the Protection of Birds] wants to see them spread to other parts of the country.

The charity hopes the birds will be tempted into thinking the new sites are good places for ospreys to settle as they return from the winter in Africa. Five fake nests are at Arne reserve and two at Poole harbour, both Dorset.

The RSPB says ospreys would once have been widespread but became extinct in the UK for four decades before returning to breed in the 1950s, with the birds now mainly found in Scotland.

'Amazing story'
Mark Singleton, RSPB visitor manager at Arne, said: "This is a really exciting experiment and one that has worked at other locations in Europe, so we're hopeful that before long we might just have some breeding ospreys of our own."

He added: "If we did get ospreys breeding at Arne it would be an amazing conservation success story and, as well as improving the population and range of this magnificent bird a little more, it would be fantastic for all our visitors."

Two "polyospreys" have been to added to the 6ft-wide stick nests which have been splashed with white paint to give them that "lived-in" look. The Dorset coast has been chosen because ospreys are adapted to catching fish. The RSPB hopes from there they will spread to other parts of the south of England, which provides better food sources than their current home in Scotland.

Reading Joyce's post and that butcher-job picture, Ei, made me think "this is a job for the arborist or tree surgeon".  Get the experts in to manicure and trim the trees and bushes and also to estimate the damage.  Call your insurance company (you never know).  You are talking HUGE trees/bushes - get the experts involved to both save the lilacs and your pocketbook.
[/quote]

Vent away! What a nasty trick! But on the bright side (IS there one?) - I need to trim one of our lilacs as it has got very tall and leggy, with blooms only at the top and out of reach. The website from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHA) says they can be pruned all at once... in which case you wait 3 yrs for more blossoms. OR - and this is what I plan to do - prune one-third each year for 3 years. While they say this should be done in autumn, perhaps something like this could work. Good ideas re insurance and pros, tho.

See if the insurance people will let you get a Lilac-Cam so you can catch the blighters!! nono thumbsdown

Big excitement! Window washer guy is doing our windows and is getting buzzed by a very irate Archer who is making a racket and dive bombing the guy. Only one more window to do.

I really wish I had my camera for this show.

Is that window-washer guy like the one in the Diet Coke commercial? So... where's your office???

(I think what we have here is the Silly Season... that seemingly endless period between egg-laying and hatching...)

This has me thinking, when the eyasses fledge, and I have my window open and one happens to fly in, can I keep it as a pet? I always wanted a pet falcon. I can train it to keep the starlings out of my feeders, scare away the squirrels, keep my cats in line . . . oh the possibilities!

I dunno.  Do they allow pets in JAIL??

This from yesterday on the BBC website... A couple of translations first... An ASBO is an anti-social behaviour order, usually issued by police to neighbourhood tear-aways. Traditionally, England's monarch of the day "owned" all swan herds.

Call to Queen over 'Mr Asbo' swan in Cambridge

Rowers in Cambridge have called for the Queen to remove an aggressive swan nicknamed "Mr Asbo" which they claim attacks people using the river.

The bird patrols a 1,600ft (488m) stretch of water near its nest in Fen Ditton, a spokesman from the Cambridgeshire Rowing Association said.

President Bill Key said the swan flaps its wings and pecks rowers and boats. Mr Key said the cox of his crew is afraid to go into the water because she was injured in an attack by the swan. The Cam Conservators said they have been in discussions about its removal.

Her Majesty's Warden of the Swans, Prof Chris Perrins, who works in the zoology department at Oxford University, said: "The Crown does not own this bird but it can claim it."

"The cox of my own crew is frightened to go in the water because she received bruising from an attack," says Cambridgeshire Rowing Association President, Bill Key. He said it is essential that permission is sought from Her Majesty's Swan Marker, David Barber, who advises on behalf of the Crown whether a claim for ownership will be made. If approval is given, a licence must be collected from Natural England.

Prof Perrins said the options include relocating the swan or clipping the feathers on one wing to discourage aggressive behaviour by throwing it off balance when it attacks.

Mr Key said that 1,000 local rowers and 2,000 university students use the stretch of water.
"This swan caused untold disruption and injury last year and the same thing is happening again now," said Mr Key. "There have been dozens and dozens of attacks. The cox of my own crew is frightened to go in the water because she received bruising from an attack in the past."

While this is a plea for funds (and therefore perhaps seen as inappropriate for this forum, which I understand...), it nonetheless acts as an informational piece about the serious plight of wolves throughout North America.

Lobos under deadly attack…

Extremists are targeting the most endangered wolves in the world for death.  Help us put the criminal killers behind bars and save these precious animals before it's too late.

Dear Wildlife Supporter,

First she was shot.

Then the body of this highly endangered wolf was dumped -- like a sack of garbage -- along the side of the road.

To scientists she was F386, a five-year-old female that represented hope for her struggling species.

To us, she was a beautiful animal who deserved the right to live in the wilds of America's Southwest, where these wolves once thrived.

This terrible killing underscores the growing mindless hatred threatening Mexican wolves -- or lobos -- the rarest wolves in the world.

Please donate today to help catch the wolf haters who are stalking and killing lobos and put in place a protective recovery program for the most endangered wolves in the world.

Decades of trapping, shooting and poisoning exterminated lobos from the wild. In 1998, wild wolves returned to the Southwest -- but more than a decade later, their lives are in grave danger.

Criminal wolf killers, mismanagement and a venomous anti-wolf movement have caused the Mexican wolf population to plummet to just 42 -- putting these rare animals at risk of a second extinction in the wild.

Please stand with us today and give these wolves a fighting chance through your tax-deductible donation.

The bottom line is that lobos will not survive the fierce onslaught of these extremists without our immediate action. Your contribution will help Defenders...

-Post rewards to help law enforcement capture and put these lawless wolf killers behind bars.
-Push Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to fast-track a science-based plan for restoring lobos to their rightful home in the Southwest. Already, nearly 53,000 Defenders activists like you have sent messages to Secretary Salazar urging immediate action, including thousands of wolf supporters living in Arizona and New Mexico.
-Counter the propaganda of extremists through an aggressive public education campaign.
-Use proven on-the-ground techniques to keep wolves away from livestock and away from those who would harm them.

Please donate now to help save the last 42 wild lobos and other wildlife struggling to survive.

The plight of lobos is desperate. Only two breeding pairs are left in the wild as these wolves struggle to survive -- including the mother and father of the Middle Fork pack who have each lost a leg to a painful human-made trap and gunshot wound.

State officials have twice targeted this three-legged pair for removal from the wild. Defenders is again working on the ground to ensure these wolves stay out of harm's way.

The fight to save these magnificent wolves from a second extinction in the wild will be tough, but with your help, I know we can succeed for them.

Save something wild,

Rodger Schlickeisen

P.S.  Wolf-haters are stalking the last 42 Southwest wolves in the wild.  Help us put wolf killers behind bars and secure protection for these beautiful animals with your secure online donation or call 1-800-385-9712 to donate by phone.
