In the category "It's an ill wind that blows no good", ferries and trains across Europe are doing a booming business as travellers try to get the better of the no-flight situation. But the following takes British Bureaucracy a bridge too far... Slainte! Bobbie From the BCC... Man forced to cycle on to ferryA London businessman stranded in France by the no-fly ban is back in the UK after having to buy a women's bicycle to allow him aboard a returning ferry. Thom Noble, 52, from Highgate, said operator Norfolkline had no foot passenger tickets left and would only let him on as a cyclist. He said staff at Dunkirk even made him ride the cycle, which he bought from a second-hand shop, up the ferry's ramp. Norfolkline was not available for comment on Saturday. Child's bikeHe said half a dozen people grounded by the volcanic ash had the same idea and boarded the boat in a wobbling parade of two-wheelers. One man, a British Airways gold card member, was riding a children's bicycle. Mr Noble, the managing director of a marketing company, and his colleague, set off on Friday morning from Zurich in Switzerland. The trip involved six trains and three taxis just to reach the French ferry port. He said the second-hand shop had had a run on bicycles and he bought a women's bike for 49 euro (£43) while his colleague picked out a bright pink contraption with a giant basket in front. Mr Noble said once in Dover they were forced to dump the bicycles in order to get on a bus to go to the railway station.

Ireland's birding world - especially the Twitcher Fraternity (and I do mean "fraternity"!) - nearly lost its reason a few years back when news of the Ivory-billed appeared. However, I recall that their initial delight soon turned to scepticism. Still... what with so many new species being discovered so recently, maybe they are still out there... to repeat an earlier poster's sentiments - perhaps "Hope" truly is "the thing with feathers"...

Bobbie-were you a Rochester follower in the days of the incubation haiku? It was a fun way to pass the time. And Aafke's name that bird contests...I'm forgetting something else...
Hey Ei...Bobbie was on the old Kodak Board discussion! Yes, that long ago! I thought so, but I wasn't sure...a lot of us have been around that long! Yes, 'twas I! At least unless there is another Bobbie on the Forum, I do go back a long way - and, like Dumpsterkitty, I am forgetting everything else!! How nice that people remember each other... which is why I am so delighted to be here again - thanks to everyone who makes it possible. Slainte! Bobbie

There are currently no aircraft operating under Instrument Flight Rules between Iceland and Germany. All scheduled flights to and from Iceland, Scotland, England, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Belgium and much of France have been cancelled. In this picture, each small rectangle marks an aircraft position.

This is so strainge,so quiet.I can't see the ash, because it is to high in the air,but I can hear lots of birds.Greetings Carla Eerily silent over Irish airspace too, tho we are not as hard-hit as UK and the Continent. Right now, I am listening to a wildlife programme on Irish radio, where they are discussing the effects, if any, which this ash cloud might have on migratory birds. Some - Whooper Swans, Pink-footed Geese, Greylag Geese, Puffins - are now returning to Iceland on their northward Spring migration and have been seen covered in ash. Most birds, however, appear to migrate at lower altitudes - and they are also smart enough to go around the clouds. I'd be interested, tho - as we all would - to hear others input on this. If the eruption continues, there could indeed be further problems - geese especially will be ingesting affected grass, while Puffins will return to traditional burrows and attempt excavating through the ash. So there could be more to this than a few cancelled flights... A not-very-Slainte (Cheers!) message this time... Bobbie

No I'm not the screaming one.I live in Purmerend, about 12 km from Amsterdam. I don't know why there is so much screaming. The church is always under construction. There is a lot traveling noise. It's a noisy site. Greetings Carla A lot of noise and always building? You betcha! I wonder if Gaudi actually planned it so it would be never-ending. Happy to hear you are solid NL ground! (I can't stand on a chair without getting dizzy... that's what men are for... ) Are you being blasted by the volcanic ash? Slainte! Bobbie
