S is for Shelduck

The Shelduck is a large kind of Duck.
We have lots of them. In Spring there are lots of babies and they create large groups of babies, 2 young female birds take care of them, they call it creches.

The Smew is a very beautiful duck, specially the males in black and white are very good looking.
We only have them during the winter and it's hard to find them.

For me the O is also for Oystercatcher

It's one of my favourite birds, really. He belongs in my top 10.
He looks so nice with his long orange bill and in Spring it is very nice to see little groups of birds together and moving in a fun way.

There are several versions of the nursery rhyme, but this is the one I remember

Pattycake, Pattycake, baker’s man,
Bake me a cake as fast as you can;
Roll it, pat it, mark it with a B,
Put it in the oven for baby and me.

Pattycake started as pat-a-cake, which actually makes more sense.  And this bit about the clapping game from wikipedia...

The game

The rhyme is often accompanied by hand-clapping between two people, a clapping game. It alternates between a normal individual clap with two-handed claps with the other person. The hands may be crossed as well. This allows for a possibly complex sequence of clapping that must be coordinated between the two. If told by a parent to a child, the "B" and "baby" in the last two lines are sometimes replaced by the child's first initial and first name.

N is for Nuthatch
It's the only N bird that I can find. I saw my first Nuthatch in a park in Budapest, Hungary. Funny how you remember things.

Here a few pictures from the Nuthach webcam this year, it was a great webcam and so nice to follow this bird during the egg season. At first they made the hole in the nestbox a lot smaller.
