I can't tell anything in the picture.  It is going to be harder and harder to spot Orion as he expands his territory.  I do believe he is a gifted falcon.  Perhaps it is because of that food all over him when he was a baby.  Isn't he way ahead on the juvie falcon flying curve?  Seems he totally skipped the flappy stage.

You are a good outdoor bird mom.  Sparrows are obviously happy.

Love it. Thanks.
409  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: This is no pigeon! Peregrine falcon shows up on sidewalks of New York on: 08-Aug-12, 05:26:16 PM
I just got this from the Hudson River Almanac.  Thought the bird had to be from MetLife or Hospital for Special Surgery.

8/1 - Manhattan, HRM 4.0: As a friend and I walked down Second Avenue in mid-afternoon at the southeast corner of 42nd Street, we saw what we assumed was our neighborhood red-tailed hawk but later discovered was a young peregrine falcon. It sat motionless in the street, dazed and clearly injured as it could fly only in short spurts, almost haltingly. We and others stopped traffic and by moving slowly toward it, got the bird onto the sidewalk. We tried to stop pedestrians from walking past too closely because clearly that was unnecessarily frightening the bird. A bystander called the Wild Bird Fund and, after a while, two police officers arrived. We finally left, but not until there were enough caring people indicating a willingness to stay until help arrived.

[This young peregrine, one of three from this year's nest on the Met Life Building, had been on the wing for almost a month and a half before ending up on 42nd Street. After being picked up by the New York Police Department that afternoon, she was taken to The Wild Bird Fund, a new Manhattan rehabilitation facility. On 8/3 she was transported to The Raptor Trust in Millington, NJ, for further examination and treatment. I'm pleased to report she is currently on the mend. The Raptor Trust's vet reports that she has a fracture on the left wing (which he says should heal fine), as well as a slipped tendon in her left ankle (which will be fixed surgically). Her prognosis is good for a full recovery and release at some point in the future. Barbara Saunders, NYSDEC Region 2/Fish, Wildlife, and Marine Resources.]

[Peregrines pursue avian prey in flight, tricky business at best and even more so in the tight quarters of Manhattan’s "canyons." In addition to learning to master their hunting skills, young falcons need some sheer good luck to survive - hopefully this bird will prosper thanks to many helping hands. Steve Stanne.]

Just read the text about Orion flying high in the wind over the garage.  I WISH I had stayed.  I could have driven Donna home, too.

This is a fabulous resource in Links.  Hope it's ok to post the link here, too.  Just click on the markers to see the pictures of the buildings.  You get a sense of how proficient Orion is to be able to make it to all the locations.

Carol, you rule as the Rochester Falcon Fotographer.  I just try and copy you.  Glad you liked the pictures.  I love the peregrines because of Rochester.  I always give credit to you folks.

Seems appropriate to post a response to twitter reports here.  Running, hopping, walking, jumping, flapping along an OCSR I beam seems to be Orion's most favorite sport.  I agree.  Sign him up for the Olympics.

Thanks Paul and Bobbie.  We missed you both.  It was a great trip and thrilling to see Orion fly so well.  I have everything crossed that he makes it.

Just put up some more.  These are landmark pictures for the most part.  I'll look through my 1500 pictures once or twice more to see if I missed one or two that looked pretty good.

Orville must have wanted some air.  He has a much better view from there.
417  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Please Enjoy Orion Pictures on: 06-Aug-12, 09:46:53 AM
Thanks, again all.  Rochester falcons are the reason I now take pictures.  I had to keep up with Marcia, Carol P, Dana, Grannywood, Lou, and Jim P.  Sorry if I forgot some of the other photographers there.

Thanks for the compliments, but...  I always come away from Rochester falcons and their folks feeling really good.  The lens and pics are a reflection of the falcon folks in Rochester.  You don't get great pics without great people telling you about the birds.  Doesn't happen.

Seems appropriate to post this here, even though Ei started it.  Thank you for the great Rochester welcome and hospitality.  MAK gets a BIG APPRECIATION PAT for hosting the girls.  Now my visit to Falcon Mecca is complete and I am sitting at a rest stop in the rain that will be in Rochester soon.

Pictures are coming.  A few Rochester folks got a mini preview.  Hope to get them up this afternoon here.
