241  Rochester Falcons / Rfalconcam Website News / Re: Update on Website Problems - 5/11/12 on: 12-May-12, 09:41:12 AM
Collecting everything is only one piece of the puzzle. Putting everything back in the right place is the hard part, especially on an active system without the help of skilled programmers.

Ouch! Do we have any forum members from RIT's IT department (or any other professional in an IT department at any other school or business) who are willing and knowledgeable enough to help with this, or even able to advise on what might need to happen?

Is there anything that general forum members who aren't IT-savvy can do to help, or at least anything we should not do to avoid making the process more difficult?

Thank you, Shaky!

They aren't all full posts, unfortunately, and Shaky said Yahoo had a glitch too and some stuff wasn't copied over.  But you are absolutely correct-all is not completely lost.  While it's far from ideal, between the dailies and Yahoo and our friends at BCAW we should be able to put a reasonable amount of the missing information together.

Is there any way to put out a press release to the public requesting any pictures they might have, just in case there are people who didn't participate on-line, or only watched the cameras, but otherwise didn't participate in the forum? Contacting Rachel Barnhart perhaps?

Just read the 2012 Timeline topic posted under Rochester Falcon Discussion, where this was discussed.

My best wishes to all!

I have everything going back to 2007 backed up. I have almost everything up to March backed up. Just nothing after March 1st.  bang head

Aren't all the posts automatically forwarded to the kfalconcam board on yahoo? I know I hadn't posted there in years, but my posts from this year showed up there, including the ones that were removed by moderators. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear the pictures are included (e.g. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/kfalconcam/message/170540 ), but the text is there to recover that much.

I hope this helps. Best of luck to everyone working on this problem, especially Shaky for being the forum-face of all those efforts. bow

245  Member Activities / Events / Starting today! 2012 Tree Peony Festival of Flowers is early this year. on: 12-May-12, 07:16:28 AM
Unfortunately, I can't go this weekend, but here's hoping some of you can!

-----

Linwood Gardens is pleased to present the EARLY 2012 edition of the Tree Peony Festival of Flowers. The gardens will be open from 9 am through 5 pm on May 12 and 13, May 19, and 20, and May 26, 27 and 28. Please note that these include the usual three weekends of Saturdays and Sundays, and Memorial Day Monday as well, but has been moved back a week. There is no weekend in June this year.

Due to the early spring, the flowers will arrive early, and we will be open for Mother's Day weekend! Also, we will be visited by several musician groups this year:
     Recorders:  May 12, 1:00 pm
     Alpine Horns:  May 13, midday
     Bagpipes:  May 20, 10:00 am
     Dulcimers:  May 27, 2:00 pm

Any festival day provides spectacular views of the Genesee Valley, the summer house, and the rest of the grounds and gardens. The variable weather of spring strongly influences bloom times. The earliest tree peonies, the Japanese varieties, should begin blooming first, and current updates will be available on the website. Historical photographs are on display in the Summer House. If it gets chilly, there will undoubtedly be a cozy fire going in the Oak Room.

When you visit, the suggested donation is $8, which goes toward garden preservation. This donation also allows you to enter the raffle to win a tree peony. A $10 donation includes not only the raffle ticket, but also a guided tour.

There is no shade in the parking areas to allow animals to be left safely in your vehicle. As there are also several resident pets, for your pet's health and safety, please refrain from bringing any animals with you other than documented service animals.

A limited number of tree peonies are available for purchase, to be picked up in the autumn. Additionally, small gift items are also available.

Hot and cold beverages, soups, light lunch fare, snacks, and desserts may be purchased on site. Sorry, no picnic facilities are available.

As spring is providing a beautiful and peaceful setting here, we hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,
The Tree Peony Festival of Flowers staff and volunteers

Further update on my almost-puppy:

Got to stay with her during the Tree Peony Festival, and she has had some downs and ups. She was doing considerably better, until, due to her excessively thick triple coat, the very wet weather, and her difficulties moving because of the vestibular symptoms and her age, she acquired a nasty infestation of creepy-crawlies...YUCK!

As a result, she is now shaved quite a bit, has been on additional meds, but has made leaps and bounds, and is now 'back to work' when the weather isn't too hot... and ravenously hungry, which will continue until she is done with the steroids.

She is back to talking, and whining, and looking for water in the ditch to wade in (which is what we thought she had done until she stopped eating again... poor girl.) All in all, things look bright. The bonus is she's a lot cooler than she would have been, and she's pretty intelligent about staying out of the sun, so she's not getting sunburned. Also, we found out she's part llama, which explains why she has never liked being brushed...

It's pretty neat to be able post a question about a scary moment in life, and have a community of people I've never met rush to help, comfort and educate me, and make a dog's life so much better!

It doesn't seem adequate, but thank you all again!

Cache or food caching - storing dead birds in known 'larders' (a.k.a. various building nooks and crannies) for later consumption... especially helpful when dealing with hungry eyases...

Watcher! The dedicated locals and visitors who volunteer to help educate the public while observing and, if necessary, intervening to protect sick/injured/disoriented peregrines (and occasionally other strays) should they become unable to properly care for themselves.

Wildlife rehabilitator - An authorized specialist devoted to taking care of sick/injured wild animals, who works with the goal of releasing healthy animals back into the wild. Often works in concert with a veterinarian, providing longer-term care for wild animals. Some provide sanctuary for animals otherwise unable to be released back to the wild.

How about TV (turkey vulture), and I can't remember if there are any other abbreviations for commonly chased intruders...

Falcon - approximately a third larger in size than a tiercel... (recommend side-by-side comparison of B and A that someone so kindly posted previously)

BWF/BYF (big white feet / big yellow feet) and the age approximately that they change...

Crop (picture most definitely helpful, especially a full one)

Egg-turning - done frequently during incubation to keep one side from sticking, and helps ensure fertilized eggs develop properly

The reason bad eggs must be removed from the nest (bad for feathers, I think?)

The major landmarks in eyas development - pin feathers, body temperature regulation, etc...

Money bag / purse and foot - parts of Mercury statue

Courtship behaviors - bowing, food deliveries, etc.

Pebble-picking

Falcon eating eggshells - helps replenish mama's calcium levels

Brooding, mantling, and other eyas-protecting behaviors

Food-exchange, talon tag, stoop, and any other flying behaviors

We don't have any little ones locally to watch this year, so if we dig through our memory banks to other behaviors or characteristics we have watched during the past summers, I'm sure there are more... and a pleasant reason to reminisce...

I'm confused...wasn't that the egg that MAK found on the street.  Or maybe I missed something...

Forgot about that - I'm going to blame it on the heat! Embarrassed  I believe you are right...

Does anyone else see a landing falcon with wings raised in the stain on the south side of the nestbox? (Upper right corner.) Or is it my eyesight playing tricks on me?

255  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Pictures from the Rfalconcam cameras on: 31-May-11, 08:52:31 PM
Their could be another egg in the well at the nest. Archer looked like he put one over the side to the left of the nest box. Maybe it's still there. He didn't seem to carry it away.

Am I right in thinking the only way to see that would be to seriously unzoom the Main Cam, if it is in a spot not blocked by a board?
