This blog has links to photography from Birdcam users. It is a product promotional site, but some of the photos are amazing!

For example, a rufous humingbird:

Has anyone checked out the history of the building Beauty was born on?

The Cathedral of Learning is an architectural melting pot - the inside has classrooms designed by the various cultural/ethnic groups of Pittsburg, including remnants of the British House of Commons after it was bombed in World War II. It's fascinating if you like culturally diverse architecture and/or history that you can tour virtually.

And, of course there's the bird culture that can be found on the outside! happy What gorgeous buildings to grow and  fledge on! (The building on the right is the Heinz Spire Cathedral, common resting site for fledglings.)

How sad that the web page has to carry this type of disclaimer.

590  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / how to look for eggs without looking for eggs... on: 12-Apr-10, 11:26:37 PM
Ok, now I'm seeing eggs that aren't there. I swear I thought this looked like a 3rd egg.....but not. She is still in Labor or whatever you call it in a Falcon.  Embarrassed I'm going egg-buggy.  star

Fortunately, on cams 2 & 3, the eggs show up as vivid white at night (i think that's due to infrared)... it's just the main cam you have to really search for them...

on the main cam, when you are looking for an egg at night, don't look for an egg... i know that seems odd to say, but what shows up better is where the stone pattern isn't there anymore... the edges of each of the pebbles show up fairly well, and if there's a smooth patch, and it's not pf parts, it might be an egg...

i've attached a WIDE picture showing the lower portion of the nest box illustrating what i mean... slide the bar back and forth, and you should see lots of gravel, pf feet, and then two smooth spots with no gravel pattern (eggs)...

hope it helps... ezsha

I believe Shaky is batching them by date, so that they take up less space...
I click on them, and then hit back, and the new buttons disappear...

Hope this helps!

She passed away last fall, but her archives of decades of photos were discovered a couple years ago. They are mostly of Chicago in the 50s and 60s. She was a French immigrant who came here and fell in love with movies and her camera.  (Thank you, mldeed, for posting the european blog link, which started this webquest.)

The gentleman who bought them  has created a wonderful blog, on which he is posting a great many of her pictures... he still has thousands to go...

An article with more about the gentleman and his inspiration... it's a neat and also enigmatic story... ezsha

(She liked to photograph people... I hope this guy was careful... urban pf bait, for sure! Cheesy)
595  Support / Camera Problems / Re: Cam 1 looking at the Erie Canal lock? since 6:16 on: 12-Apr-10, 02:35:49 PM
The Erie Canal is in Rochester???  That's Lake Ontario - is this an offshoot (of course, Greenwood Lake at the turn of the 20th Century was part of the Morris Canal - never connected).

The Erie Canal used to go right through... the image that started this thread is one of the old locks, I believe...here's a map of the original system, which Rochester also has remnants of...

Here's a map of the current canal system...

For those visitors from around the country and the world, here's a bit about where the Erie Canal
passed over the Genesee River, via aqueduct... as previously stated, Broad Street was added on top...

The Erie Canal now passes through the south part of the city, near the University of Rochester.

Hope this helps...

Hey everyone.  I know this is a learning process for all of us, including me!  Wink  Try to remember that everything posted on Rfalconcam Now is posted as a Tweet to the Watchers.  This section should ONLY be used for posting Falcon sightings.  Include the time and and what falcon is on camera (if you can ID it).  During the Fledge Watch the Watchers will appreciate knowing what falcon in in the nestbox.  Thanks!

Sorry about that - I thought I was on another tab for Cam issues.... If a moderator could move this topic, I'd appreciate it!

My apologies!

597  Support / Help! / Another non-help Shaky question on: 11-Apr-10, 06:29:01 PM
Is it possible to get a "panoramic view" looking out from the nest box with the cameras? A series of ground level and also box level photos so those of us who can't be there can gain a better understanding of where stuff is?

The picture of the lock, and earlier in the spring Mercury made me think of it...

Thanks either way!

I think Ei and Aafke (sp?), off the top of my head...

Yes Aafke is from the NlL but Ei is from Georgia, NY.  Cheesy

I'm from what??? sp or NlL?
hysterical I'm from The Hague, The Netherlands
greetings Aafke

Sorry, Aafke - when I am unsure of the spelling of something, it is common for me to put (sp?) as a way of requesting forgiveness if it is mispelled... I have been to the Hague  and Amsterdam briefly, and appreciated my visit there greatly... you live in a beautiful country! (And I recently learned that Holland is to the Netherlands as New York is to the United States, so I no longer call it Holland!)

Sorry Ei... for some reason I thought you were overseas too... Embarrassed Welcome back to NY! (in my mind, anyway! Cheesy )
