The Narragansett Turkey is a breed of Meleagris gallopavo which descends from a cross between the Eastern Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) and the domestic turkey brought to Colonial America by English and other European colonists beginning in the 17th century. According to the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, the Narragansett Turkey is a "historic variety, unique to North America" and is named for Narragansett Bay This is what I found Not sure if it's the same as yours! Unfortunately, I couldn't get any closer, and the zoom function made everything blurry... I was taking the pictures from across the canal, and after reviewing my pictures, I don't see the really white one that first caught my attention. I believe s/he had already disappeared down the opposite bank by the time I got my camera out. Coming down the road, I originally thought they might be turkey vultures, but when I got out of the car, I started talking to them to get their attention, and was greeted with a melodious and rousing concert of "gobble, gobble, gobble, gobble!" Definitely not vultures.

I was coming home along the Erie Canal well west of Rochester, and spotted an unusual groups of turkeys on the opposite bank. I am uncertain as to whether there were eight or nine, but three of them were predominantly white/grey. Possibly this is a recessive trait, but I was hoping someone here might have more informaiton. Cornell Lab does not have any pictures that I can find.
Any input would be appreciated. (The clearest picture doesn't show all of them, and I just have a Kodak point and shoot, used from a looong ways away.) ezsha

How wonderful that one of Belle's offspring is being named Unity! This video is awesome. Those birds don't mess around. They hit the wooden shields, and hit the hard hat wearing person! They do protect their young. It is interesting to think that such 'deadly force' is used in a 'robbery' where jewelry is added and not taken way... One would hope that their talons don't get scraped up by hitting the wood or plastic - just the thought of high-speed slivers makes me wince! However, seeing the aeronautical skill she uses to fly through the arch without hitting the wall after she hit the hard-hat? That's impressive!
