Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: On Chesapeake Bay, an Island Saved from Sinking

I've had the great fortune to visit Poplar Island and Hart-Miller Island which has also been the recipient of the dredge material. When Poplar is full, they will have to look for another place to dump the stuff, so Sharp's might be next. Peregrines have nested at the light house nest to Hart-Miller. Not only are birds enjoying the rebirth of these islands, but butterflies, turtles and all sorts of other animals have found a new home or stop-over.

I only have a few cardinals and lots of sparrows left - everyone else has migrated, so this is a nice treat while I wait for the Eagles to return. You should have doves, titmice, chickadees, house finch, goldfinch all visiting your feeders. And robins are eating all the berries on my dogwoods plus a scarlet tanager has been visiting my birdbath. And keep your hummingbird feeder up to feed and entice migrating birds.

Looks like a Mantis.....but is it? Thanks Janet again I think this is a mantis as the walking stick does not have the triangular shaped head. Have been seeing mantis and katydid around the house recently. Just don't take a praying mantis egg thing (is there a better name?) into the house unless you want a zillion little mantises all over the place.

We can't blame you really. It's been about 2 weeks since we've posted one. The problem isn't with the data, it's with the money. You may recall that the money for the Quest tracking project came to the Genesee Valley Audubon Society (GVAS) in the form of a grant made by the...

OK gals, why are you afraid of a non-poisonous snake? Black snakes, either black rat or black racer, are beneficial and will keep the nasty little rodents out of your garage and house. They are probably more afraid of you than you are of them. I'm not a huge fan but am also not going to overreact if I see one.
Well for me Helen, it goes back to my childhood. My brother put LIVE snakes in my bed. Granted, they were only Garden snakes but in my BED??? I was 10 or 11 and when I felt it moving down by my legs......OH I SCREAMED and ran right out of the house, up the street and kept going in my PJ's. Sorry but I never got over it. Oh before that, snakes didn't really bother me, we had them all around our house. Donna, The Big Do you speak to your brother? Not sure I ever could. to your brother!
