No one knows why they do it. Yet each fall, thousands of starlings dance in the twilight above England and Scotland. The birds gather in shape-shifting flocks called murmurations, having migrated in the millions from Russia and Scandinavia to escape winter's frigid bite. Scientists aren't sure how they do it, either. The starlings' murmurations are manifestations of swarm intelligence, which in different contexts is practiced by schools of fish, swarms of bees and colonies of ants. As far as I am aware, even complex algorithmic models haven't yet explained the starlings' aerobatics, which rely on the tiny birds' quicksilver reaction time of under 100 milliseconds to avoid aerial collisions-and predators-in the giant flock.
Despite their tour de force in the dusky sky, starlings have declined significantly in the UK in recent years, perhaps because of a decline in suitable nesting sites. The birds still roost in several of Britain's rural pastures, however, settling down to sleep (and chatter) after their evening ballet.
Two young ladies were out for a late afternoon canoe ride and fortunately one of them remembered to bring her video camera. What they saw was a wonderful murmuration display, caught in the short video - URL is below. Watch the variation of color and intensity of the patterns that the birds make in proximity to one other. And take a look at the girl in the bow of the canoe watching the aerial display. Enjoy.

A truly beautiful account of the basic element of life.  Thanks for finding and posting it, Dale.  T.E.D. used it at one of their conferences.

Yellow-billed Hornbill

The Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill is common in Djuma, South Africa where WildEarth conducts its live safaris.  These are screen captures from safari.tv.  Hornbills have a unique breeding strategy.  Prior to laying her eggs, the female creates a nest in a cavity of a tree.  She builds a wall using mud, droppings and fruit pulp until there is only a small aperture remaining.  She lays and broods the eggs.  The male feeds her, and later the chicks, through that small hole.  When the chicks are ready to fledge. The wall is torn down.  By sealing off predators, there is a high hatching success rate.

There are 54 species of hornbills in Africa and Asia.  More information is at:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbill  and at:  http://www.earthlife.net/birds/bucerotiformes.html

A great article appeared in this morning rag on the birds that winter in the Central Valley.  I know we have few California members, but some of you birders may wish to make this area a destination point for the future.  Also the article is just plain interesting!

We have discussed Whooping Cranes in several other threads.  Here are two chicks from the class of 2010 in the pen at Necedah prior to departure.

Willet

The willet breeds inland in short grasses.  It is a favorite shorebird and was found in Elkhorn Slough near Monterey.
