insane weather!!!

Was just looking at camera 1.  Seems Mama has taught baby Orion to keep his "poop art" in the front yard where the rain will wash it away-- instead of on the back walls as previous eyases have decorated.  A well trained son will make a well trained husband someday. laugh

I really hope they get this baby banded soon. Losing track of her, after all the love we have for her, would be like losing track of Quest.

It boggles my mind what lengths some people will go to help a wild creature get on with its life  and others will stand by watching obvious suffering and do nothing and let it die unnecessarily.

The little Stone Owl has died!  crying  June 25
Ronald Harxen has already announced on the blog for the bird to investigate. Hopefully we get a result at least a little more clarity about what exactly was going on.

There was nothing wrong with that owlet.  It was perfectly healthy and could have been saved
with proper attention to the leg when it was still only a week old and the problem was discovered.
The leg could have been "hobbled" and the chick put back with the mother to continue raising.
When the leg corrected, the hobbles could have been removed and the chick would have grown
normally and fledged to the wild. They have access to band, so why not help the chick??
This is bound to happen again if they do not put some kind of "rough" surface on the nest floor.
This problem is usually caused by the chick not being able to gain footing as it crawls around
and is unable to keep its feet under it.
Just my opinion, but it comes from experience.......successful experience.

Sorry, Donna, it's too late to help the leg but they could still rescue it and keep it in a sanctuary.  This little darling will never get out of the box with that leg, he will starve unless someone does something before the parents expect it to start it's fledge routine, which it can never accomplish.

Beauty's feathers covering some of her bands. Looks like you can't read them. Her little leggy fethers are long!

Somebody has the Beautiful one on their mind??????

Finally,..... a smaller door that the owls can have some peace.  I love pigeons, but, that was so unnecessary to subject those tiny owls to such stress.
144  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: Mouth To Beak CPR Saves Bald Eagle on: 02-Mar-12, 01:59:42 PM
I just cup them in my hands and blow gently. Not with my mouth right on their beaks but with the hand enclosing the bird and the breath. Then (if you need to know this...), they go into the bra in the cleavage for warmth... then more puffing til they are better. Really!

If the little bird is infested with red mites......you might not want to put it in your bra......
Rubbing your palms together very briskly for a minute will heat the palms and you can cup
the bird in your hands to warm it.

She is spending a long time on the Main cam, just like Beauty did.  Is there a heat source coming from the cam that makes it desirable to perch there in cold weather?

We could lose Archer too.  Unity may select a new mate to share her new territory and drive Archer away.

Just shows to go you..........some people should NOT keep birds.

All good birdkeepers KNOW the birds are 10 times more clever than us
and will always "have it their way"!

If he wants information.....

That is the worst solution to his problem!! In fact, it is cruel!
Maybe you could convince him that a re-home would be best for him & the tiels.
Lemon is not going to "be his friend" either and Cricket is not yet weaned, cricket needs
her Papa still.
149  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: A case of mistaken identity!! on: 16-Feb-12, 12:07:23 PM
Gregg needs to act very soon or he is going to have possibly 8 more "problem" birds on his hands. It's very hard to sell or even give away "untamed" pet birds.  Those eggs could hatch even before Cricket is weaned.

FYI: I am not a breeder, just a birdkeeper with a 16 year old Quaker that all my friends call "Dracula" because he has gotten a bite from them all and me too!

There is not a single thing wrong with Perlie! He is acting 100% normal....he is protecting his nest, his mate and now, his family!!  It's instinct. You can take the bird out of the wild, but, you can't take the wild completely out of the bird.

If you re-home Perlie, you must let Lemon go with him.  She will simply take over the "protection" duties if Perlie is gone.  She will "awaken" the same in Cricket and Stormy.

Also, clipping a 'tiel's wings will not solve your problem.  A 'tiel is so aerodynamically (sp) built that I have seen them fly quite well without a single flight feather.

Good luck finding them a new home....possibly a breeder would adopt them.
