301  Rochester Falcons / Rfalconcam Website News / Re: Live Video & New Camera Page In Time For Hatching on: 16-May-10, 08:26:21 PM
You know what we want next (besides hatching to begin)?  We need the LiveStream archive!

If there's a wish list for the website, I vote to add an archive of this.

My neighbor is in Louisiana, helping to put out boom lines, plotting where to put them and such (he's some kind of crew chief).  Anyway, he told his wife this week about the news helicopter buzzing the island where a bunch of Brown Pelicans were nesting.  The birds scattered, and then the seagulls moved in to snatch the eggs.  Wildlife, fish, and plants are going to have a hard enough time surviving the oil - they don't need the added disturbances from news slugs.

Two of the five eggs are hatched!  Beauty & Archer's can't be far behind.

I got a tweet this morning that had photo of Zeus and Hera changing places, and all five eggs visible.
306  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: Houston TX Peregrines on: 03-May-10, 10:59:06 AM
It is May 3, and they are still here!  I watch them perch daily on the building across the street from my office.  (How do I get any work done!?)  During winter, they would frequently perch together (Ms. Perrie and Silverback).  For the last few weeks, it has been individually, but spotting both at some point during the day.  Also see the occasionally 'feathers flying' when they are eating.

If by chance this pair is nesting here, how far away might the nest be from this daily perch spot?

Since we are a main migration flyway, and many birds fly across the huge Gulf to head back north, there are always losses.  This report is one of the worst in many years, that I can recall.  Jim Stevenson is one of the most knowledgeable experts around (came to TX from FL), and is always willing to share and educate.

Anxious for hatching - both Rochester & Woodmen!

I guess I could call this a small introduction of myself and my long-time interest in Peregrines.  It started with my spotting the wintering birds back around 2000.  This year's pair is still here, as of today!  Many of us Houston birders believe some are nesting here, but I haven't seen it yet.  Enjoy the article that appeared in our local paper in Nov. 2007.
