Anticipation at Loch of the Lowes is reaching fever pitch as we eagerly anticipate the arrival of our osprey pair. The male returned on 21st March last year so could he turn up over the weekend or even today?… we’ll all just have to keep watching and waiting. Needless to say we’ll let you know as soon as there’s any news to report.

March 20th

From the blog today:

We are delighted to announce that at 5.38am this morning the resident male returned to the nest at Loch of the Lowes. Having been observed fishing on the loch the previous night, he arrived back at the eyrie in the early hours and immediately began housekeeping duties. He left at 6.18am and has since reappeared briefly at the nest at 7.28am.

We will be releasing a full statement and pictures later on today – in the meantime keep your eyes peeled on the web cam for more osprey action!

Hoping Lady will arrive soon  . . .

Today's update from the blog:

Since his arrival in the early hours of Sunday, our resident male osprey has been busy organising his nest for the coming season. He immediately got to work, displaying some interesting cleaning techniques by using his body and splayed wings to flatten the growing grass tufts in the centre! It is possible for a female to reject a nest if it is deemed untidy enough upon her arrival, so this is a very important behaviour to witness.

On Sunday afternoon, the male treated spectators to a wonderful sight of himself returning from a successful fishing trip with a large pike grasped firmly in his talons. After returning safely from his arduous migration it’s a relief to see him demonstrating his great condition and hunting capabilities.

There is no sign yet of his usual mate, our resident female, but it is still early days and we have only just entered the typical osprey arrival period. However yesterday we received reports of 4 ospreys over the loch, and at 8.10am this morning an unidentified female arrived on the nest. She began making herself quite at home, kicking out grass and adding a stick to the nest. So far, there has been no observed interaction with our male but we will keep you all informed of any interesting developments as and when they happen!

The update also has a couple of photos.

I haven't seen anyone at the nest today so far.

Unfortunately, the female is not Lady.  :( The blog has just been updated:

At 4.25pm this afternoon a female osprey arrived at the nest and a ripple of excitement immediately washed over the staff, volunteers and visitors at the reserve. Following detailed reviews of the footage we can confirm that it is not the veteran female “Lady” but is a new unidentified female. Her initial arrival went unnoticed by our male who had not been seen on the loch for several hours, so she took a few short flights around the nest to survey her new surroundings. She has quickly settled in despite being met at first with some hostility from the male. He has since been busy delivering large sticks and moss clumps to her at the nest, and we have witnessed multiple successful matings already.

A more in depth blog will be published tomorrow, but in the meantime please enjoy the views from the webcam as the story unfolds.

NEWS: SECOND OSPREY EGG AT LOCH OF THE LOWES
17th April 2015

The Trust can confirm that the new female osprey at its Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Reserve, near Dunkeld, has laid her second egg of the season.

On Tuesday evening, the new female osprey laid her first egg and brought delight to osprey enthusiasts around the globe. Ospreys can lay up to four eggs in a season and the gaps between eggs is usually around 48 hours. The expert team at Loch of the Lowes had been alert to the possible arrival of a second egg but had not seen the tell-tale egg-laying signs from the bird such as laying low in the nest, tail-lifting and panting.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust Perthshire Ranger, Charlotte Fleming, said: “At around 2.36pm, the new female osprey laid her second egg of the season. It came as a surprise to the staff and volunteers at the Scottish Wildlife Trust Loch of the Lowes Visitor Centre and Reserve, as she was not displaying egg-laying behaviour for very long beforehand.

“Eggs on the nest means the Osprey Protection Programme is now in full operation. This is only possible thanks to the Trust’s range of supporters, including players of People’s Postcode Lottery. This vital funding means the Trust is able to operate a 24-hour watch on the nest site to ensure the safety of the birds and the eggs.

“Hopefully, in the coming days there will be more eggs as ospreys can lay up to four in a season. The average is three. The Scottish Wildlife Trust is encouraging people to visit scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/ospreycam and see if they can spot the next egg when it is laid.”

Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, Clara Govier, said: “Players will be delighted to know they’re supporting this fantastic cause. Ospreys are rarer than golden eagles and need protection. We are really excited to hear the news of a second egg.”

Missing Scottish osprey found 3,000 miles away in Senegal

An osprey that went missing from a Scottish nature reserve for more than 18 months has been found almost 3,000 miles away – on a beach in Senegal.

The three-year-old male bird, known as Blue YD, was tagged with a lightweight satellite tracker in July 2012 at a Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) reserve near Forfar.   :o

Yet the device stopped transmitting in May 2014, leaving the wildlife trust relying on eyewitness accounts to learn of Blue YD’s whereabouts, according to which the bird had been spotted various times in North Yorkshire and St Andrews in Fife.
