Title: Peregrines at the seaside, by Glenn Nevill
Post by: Paul Hamilton on 10-May-10, 09:22:36 PM
I've always been partial to peregrines nesting on wild cliffs, and San Francisco's Glenn Nevill has taken a picture that shows falcons as I like to imagine them (http://raptor-gallery.com/2010_05_04-PM/images/2010_05_04_GN47545.jpg).  This is how they are in my dreams.

I remember pictures from that nest last year too...quite a nice place to raise eyases!

OK now that's an awesome pic Paul. Wish we had them around here. Maybe we do but haven't heard of any.  :2thumbsup:

You probably do, Donna, on the Palisades.  They're pretty quiet about where to find cliff nests to prevent disturbances.  There's a known nest near here in the Shawangunk cliffs.  They block off the hiking trails, but there's never a peep about it until after the eyases fledge.

Here's that same scrape last May in a shot from his 2010 calendar (http://raptor-gallery.com/2010-calendar/index.htm) - he has some gorgeous pictures on his site (http://raptor-gallery.com/)!

I also love the one of White-tailed kite.

Thank you, Paul!

Are there any nests in the cliffs at Letchworth?  Seems a likely location.

Good question, Amy. None that I've heard of.

Peregrines at the Palisades. Linn Pierson told me years ago there were some but that they had to find someone to rappell to them. I guess Kathy Clark (Linn's boss) learned and is doing it!

I do have a picture of the box that was installed.  Sadly, I learned on Monday, that Kathy Clark thinks the nest may have failed.  It is very close to a trail and perhaps the falcons were disturbed.

Sadly, I think Glenn Neville passed away a couple of years ago.  I think that is at Morro Bay.  If you go to scprg and check out the web site you might see it active again.

He is still blogging. Here's his About page (http://raptorgallery.wordpress.com/about/).

(Don’t take care of it and we’re all pretty much screwed.)
Words to live by, really.  I use this blog and my photography website to inspire people to take care of the planet, to care about what happens to the environment and do the right thing by it. Doing design/drafting which I love, involves sitting in front of computer, so when lunchtime comes I head out in search of bird life in the city. During the nesting season, my lens will be most likely focused on a falcon if I can find it and just about anything else that flies if not.  My goal in photography is to bring to others the joy of flight and the incredible speed and grace that birds exhibit. I hope it will awaken a greater appreciation of nature and the need for conservation of all that we hold dear on this planet.
Married to Charlene, my favorite person.
I make a living drafting, designing, and occasionally photographing birds.
Home: San Francisco, California since 1980, before that, Houston Texas.

Hmmm, one of the scprg passed and it was a big thing.  Sorry, I guess I got the wrong person.

Gad! I hope you got the wrong person.  I had to pinch myself to make sure I was still alive when I read your post. :surprise:

The person you are thinking of that passed away was Brian Walton.  He was one of the original members of the SCPBRG and kept it going for over 30 years.  The group went through tough times when the economy went bad, funding was cut and the university had to let three people go.

Now the only full time member is Glenn Stewart and he concentrates on education.  He's been doing the banding at several sites and I was there when he banded the chicks in San Francisco and in Alameda at a bridge the next day.
I have a day job drafting just two blocks from where peregrines are nesting on a 34 story building, so I photograph them at noon and after work.

Here is one I  took  of the female, Diamond Lil soaring over the city.

I also volunteer by helping to run the web camera at that site: http://www2.ucsc.edu/scpbrg/nestcamSF.htm (http://www2.ucsc.edu/scpbrg/nestcamSF.htm) and I am a co-moderator on the yahoo discussion group for that camera.

Which you can find here:http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/SF_PGE_Falcons/ (http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/SF_PGE_Falcons/)

Glad everyone liked my cliff shots, being a city boy I don't get to see them very often, I only manage a couple of visits a year. Location has to remain a secret, but I can tell you it was not Morro Rock.  The peregrines are doing well in California now and can be found up and down the coast where the cliffs are right for nesting.

My workplace is blocking this forum, so I can't respond during the day except by email which I would be happy to answer should any of you have questions.  Will check back in here evenings. Best to all.

Regards,
Glenn Nevill

Nice to see you here, Glenn.  Like Mark Twain, the reports of your death were greatly exaggerated!  Sorry to hear about staff cutbacks at Santa Cruz.  I have enjoyed your outstanding photographs for years.  Thank you for sharing them so liberally.

Sorry about that.  Yes, I was thinking about Brian Walton.  Aren't there two Brian's at SCPBRG?  I, too, love your pictures and reports about the falcons.  So glad you can post a bit on this forum.

Thanks all,  I'll try to check in as best I can. Seems with a day job and helping out on the other list, I feel like this guy most of the time... :hyper:

And having this list blocked at work makes it hard to check in at all.

Best regards,

Glenn Nevill
