Title: Fledge Watchers Weekend
Post by: KapiVT on 24-May-10, 10:32:52 PM
Has there been any discussion of, or plans made for, a Fledge Watchers Weekend this year?  If so, what are the dates?  Out-of-towners need to start thinking about motel reservations.

Let's hope it's not during that corn festival.  I'll be coming up in any case.  Donna,  wanna ride up with me?

I am looking forward to coming up this year.  Don't we plan for the weekend after July 4th?

P.S.  This is my first post!!  I think I have finally figured out how to use this site

Congratulations on your first post!  It's not so bad one you get the hang of it!

I think we need to come up with a new usually...these 2 hatched about 10 days after M&K's typically hatched.  In 2008 the official weekend was June 27 and that was really too early to see good flying...they didn't quite have their wings under them yet (except for Zephyr, of course-gave us all heart failure!)  2007 was July 7 and was just about right.  So maybe July 17th?

I know this subject is up to the discretion of GVAS and the Rochester Falcon team.

Donna, I have a motorhome.  It is very comfortable.  It has a bathroom.  Come with me.  You will love meeting everyone face to face.  More important.  Everyone will LOVE to meet you.

July 10 & 11 should be the Corn Hill Festival.  The following weekend might not be so hard getting a hotel room.

And JC has the same intent.  I have to get to Barbara the building security person.  She has talked about the building naming the birds.  Just learned today that there are some who aren't connected yet to the falcons.  The cake is a great thing.  I just sent pictures.  I just have to send the funny pictures with great quotes.  Water St is totally committed to the peregrines

Bonnie, thanks so much for the invite. Funny, I was just talking about that with my daughter and her boyfriend. They want to go but depends when. I have to house sit the week of  the 12th, watching 2 dogs. My daughters BF has family in Vermont and wants us to come up. We were thinking leaving on a Thursday, driving to VT then on Sat back to Rochester until Monday. Not sure if it will happen and it all depends on which weekend they are having it. I'll keep in touch and let you know. (I could easily hop a train to NY)  ;) Thanks again.

This piglet will be in Maryland, as we hope to have the pool completed in July.  Indy is 7/25, NC and Fathers Day is 6/20, GWL is 6/5, so we are pretty full already.  I will admit to considering a trip north, but it isn't going to work out this year.

My biggest hassle is getting the time off from work...I'll sleep in my car if I have to  :nap:

I just put in for July 15 & 16th off-even if it's not the "official" weekend, if I don't grab it now someone else will.

I'll be going up in any case.  I am very flexible.  There is room to sleep three adults very comfortably in the motorhome.  Sounds like we will all get to finally meet Donna!!

I've got a room booked for 07/15-07/18 at the Radisson...hopefully my math is right and there will be some flying to see!  As I said before, even if it's not the "official" weekend it's the only one not spoken for already, so I don't have much choice until late August.

I'll plan on being there that weekend as well.  Hope I can get Donna to come with me.

Darn...Jeane and I have a long vacation planned for July 23rd through August 1st, which means if I took off for Rochester the weekend of the 15-18th, I'd been gone three weekends in a row.  That's probably more than my stress level can stand, so I 'spose I'll miss this year.  I hope you guys get some good flying, and I hope B&A get an earlier start next year!

Now that a shame that you won't be here. We'll miss you (and the gang of three!).

We are booked for July 16-18 at the Radisson. The other nearby hotels are full that weekend, so it may be a good idea to get a reservation now and cancel it later if you can't come.

I have made reservations for July 16-19 at the Super 8 in Henrietta, through Orbitz.  I got the room for $68/night.  I stayed there in 2008 and liked it well enough.  The drive into town might take longer during the week but, on the weekend, it only took me about 10 minutes.  It's pretty much a straight shot into town.  Due to some unexpected expenses (like a tree falling though the roof during a storm), I am not particularly flush this summer so the savings on the room is worth any small inconvenience.

I hope that we can work in a visit to Dinosaur BBQ at some point.  The KAVER car is now a Honda Element but you will still know me by my license plate!

The Henrietta Super 8 is conveniently located near the Thruway (I-90) for those driving in from east or west, and it's also located near I-390 for those coming in from the south.

Parking downtown may be a bit more challenging this year given the location of the nest box. If we are lucky, the juvies will find the gorge, and there will be excellent watching opportunities from the pedestrian bridge at High Falls.

Re parking, the South Ave ramp garage (on the top level should provide excellent viewing) if the juvies are still by Times Square. Larry O

It is a good vantage, but we've had some issues in the past with not being allowed to watch from there.  June Summers is working with the city to see if we can iron those out, but I wouldn't count on that as a spot to watch from.  On the other hand, it's an excellent place to park if spaces on Broad Street Bridge are not available.  If they are, parking is free on the weekends.

Question about June 19.  On Friday night, Jim, you mentioned a meeting at the Rundel Library for those interested in being fledge watchers.  Will you be sharing additional information about time, etc.  soon?

There will be another announcement, probably after banding day.
