What a "bit" of snow can do, huh?

Male cardinal throws a fit

This male spent the entire morning chasing other male intruders all around the yard, intent on driving them off his “patch.” He would not just fly toward them to drive them off, but would pursue them, flying just a few feet behind, until they had flown off into neighboring yards.

 I think the sweetest sight in the world is when a male Cardinal places food in the females beak.  I have witnessed many a territorial chase by the males. They are non-stop motion! Thanks for sharing Donna!  :2thumbsup:

One of the spring rituals when I lived out in Hamlin was to fill the coffee butler and travel mugs stop at K&K(convenience store/gas station)for a box of donuts and head on out. The cornfields out in that vicinity would be filled with thousands of migrating Canadian Geese. The sound was deafening with their honking. The dogs would go crazy(they went everywhere with me) over the sight of them. Windows only opened slightly cuz my little cocker spaniel Kasey would have jumped out the window after them! There was plenty of nature out in Hamlin, I miss it.   :gum:

Title: Snowy Owl in Braddock Bay?
Post by: Patti from Kentucky on 02-Apr-11, 12:13:42 AM
I ran across this article...it sounds like there has been a Snowy Owl hanging out at Braddock Bay:
http://php.democratandchronicle.com/blog/birds/?p=4386 (http://php.democratandchronicle.com/blog/birds/?p=4386)

I don't remember seeing/hearing any of the locals posting this sighting (it's possible that I just missed it), so I thought I'd pass it on.

The article was from Tuesday, with the sighting on Monday, so it's possible the bird might have moved on.

I’m rooting for the wrens

All of our nest box plans have gone awry this spring.

Maybe the House Wrens can set things straight.

Back in early winter, Cathy McCollumn and I decided we would order nest boxes to attract Black-capped Chickadees. We knew full well that the entry holes must be small enough to allow chickadees to enter, but not the invasive, nuisance House Sparrows that would otherwise take over.

We ordered a couple advertised as “chickadee nest boxes” from Duncraft, and put them up, only to discover, to our dismay, that the entrance holes were too large, and the boxes were soon confiscated by House Sparrows.

So we ordered another chickadee nesting box from Audubon Workshop that was just the right dimensions, only to have a Downy Woodpecker enlarge the opening, then decide not to nest there after all. And THAT box was also taken over by House Sparrows!

Aaaaarrrrggghhhh
!

How about a portal protector?

This (http://www.leevalley.com/us/garden/page.aspx?p=67399&cat=52&ap=1), from Lee Valley, or something like it, is a great solution!
