Says off-line but there are 260 viewers online. I'm not seeing it. Can someone check it out and see if they get the live stream? Eggs are due to hatch any day now. 3 eggs.

I'm not getting it either.  Pretty sure it's off line at night.I'm guessing the viewers are either checking in or never closed their browser.

After a huge write-up in the NYT about Violet and Bobby's eggs not being viable-way overdue to hatch according to a Hawk expert, they have their first hatch today!

I had a feeling something would happen to one of them. She had that plastic bag around her neck a few weeks ago. Plus, she brought a lot of cra# to that nest that wasn't nesting material. This makes me so mad but what can you do?  :(

No matter what they decide, the lone baby will never be released unless Violet's injury from her ID band isn't that serious. It's a sad story no matter the outcome.

Updated, 3:31 p.m. | Today is the day that a team including rehabilitators and a veterinarian will try to capture and treat Violet, the red-tailed hawk and new mother whose injured leg has become dangerously swollen in recent days from a metal wildlife band.

Since early morning, rescue workers have been at New York University’s Bobst Library, where Violet and her mate, Bobby, have a nest on a 12th-floor window ledge, but as of 2:45 p.m. they had not disturbed the nest. In the afternoon, rescuers appeared briefly on the building’s roof, a site where officials had said they might put a baited trap.

The many questions that remain to be answered include: if Violet is captured, will the rescuers be able to treat and release her immediately (in which case the week-old baby hawk, or eyas, on the nest will stay put)? Or will they have to take her to the Bronx Zoo for long-term treatment (in which case they would bring the eyas with her)?

Will be on the news at 5 on CBS

Updated, 5:27 p.m. | A medical rescue team, which spent Thursday observing Violet, the red-tailed hawk and new mother with an injured leg, decided not to try to take her from her nest high above Washington Square Park in order to treat her.

The wildlife specialists said that Violet was functioning well enough — and that the risks to her and her week-old hatchling were serious enough — that intervention could not be justified.
Violet, her injured leg, and her week-old baby are staying put after all.

After observing Violet on the nest up close for a full day, the team led by the state decided that she was functioning well enough, and that the possible dangers posed by intervention - both to her and the baby - were so great, that the best course of action was not to act.

"In the final analysis," said Stephen Zahn, a regional supervisor of natural resources for the State Department of Environmental Conservation, "there was not a medical imperative to intercede on behalf of the bird with such high risks to both her and the hatchling."

Elizabeth Bunting, a veterinarian specializing in wildlife from Cornell's School of Veterinary Medicine, said that while Violet was obviously having difficulty using her swollen right leg, which has a metal wildlife band stuck high on the shin, she was using it nonetheless and was still able to extend her toes.

And, crucially, she is still able to use her right foot to hold prey while she pulls it apart to feed her baby, or eyas, Dr. Bunting said. "She is compensating very well on that foot," Dr. Bunting said at a news conference in the lobby of New York University's Bobst Library building, home of the hawk nest. "She doesn't appear to have any problems feeding him."

If the specialists were to try to capture Violet on the nest, Mr. Zahn said, and she reacted aggressively, she might knock the nest off its narrow ledge; it's "a very precarious situation," he said.

Even if Violet were to be trapped away from the nest, Mr. Zahn said, she could injure herself as tried to struggle free, or while she was being held as the doctor tried to remove the metal tag.

"There's a risk at every step of the way," he said.

Dr. Bunting said that the team would continue to monitor Violet on the Hawk Cam - "We'll be able to use the webcam to have really incredible access watching this bird's progress," she said - and would not hesitate to intervene if things turned worse.

"We'll remain cautious but vigilant in observing the bird in the upcoming weeks to make sure that this hatchling will fledge," she said. Members of the rescue team will also visit the site in person, Mr. Zahn said.

Dr. Bunting was reluctant to offer a prognosis for Violet's leg. The swelling, she said, could have been caused in part by the fact that she has spent so much time lying down on the nest, and "could go down as she starts moving around - or it could progress."

John Blakeman, a hawk expert from Ohio who has been observing the situation on the nest with varying degrees of alarm, said that he was particularly encouraged Thursday to see Violet "rouse," the term for fluffing, shaking and reshuffling her feathers.

"A hawk will only rouse when at relative or complete ease and comfort," he wrote in an e-mail. "Violet is not in the state of distress most of us presumed.

"Nothing is as revealing as a good, feather-shaking rouse."

As for the baby, which has been growing quickly on a half-dozen or so meals a day and has begun wiggling its stubby wings as it tries to move about the nest, Chris Nadareski, a raptor specialist and section chief with the city's Department of Environmental Protection, said that it appeared to be doing just fine, a reflection of Violet's effectiveness as a mother.

"We can say she's doing a good job," he said.

I think they made the right decision.  Poor Violet  and her hatchling.  Keep her and her chick in your thoughts.  Nature can be kind.

Pip Sighting! Watch her fly! June 30, 2011
It was comical the way we found Pip tonight. She was on top of the same building she had been on since the day she fledged. We were so busy watching Bobby on top of the American Flag pole. All of a sudden I noticed a small shape of something dark and different between two structures on the building's roof and I cried out, "Ooh!" Within a millisecond, she began to move and make herself more obvious. She caught a gust of wind which carried her aloft and to the top of the antenna dish Violet has been favoring. Within several seconds she flew.. FLEW(!) from her perch atop the dish, across the street, and to the roof of the first building on the other side.

While quite so sad and uncomfortable for all, humans and especially Violet, birds hide their problems almost until it is impossible to treat them.  If she is captured, she may not be happy in a captive environment which is ultimately the case.  It is a very tough call on this one.

Many thanks to Marie Winn, author of Red-tails in Love , andhttp://mariewinnnaturenews.blogspot.com/ for posting John Blakeman's thoughts on the injured Washington Square female, Violet, while I've been out of commission.

There is no hope for Violet. Absolutely nothing can be done to save, treat, or cure her debilitated foot. She's doomed. It is impossible for a hawk to live on only one leg. Sooner or later, the un-rested, always-stood-upon remaining foot will get bumblefoot, an infection and loss of tissue very similar to human bed sores. Once that begins, the hawk will die.

So far, bumblefoot hasn't set in, probably because she's able to spend some time in the air, allowing microcirculation in the foot. But in Dec and Jan, with 16 hours of cold nights, the leg will be stressed. The game will be over.
And nothing could be done to treat the dead foot if she is trapped. Bumblefoot and death would result, just as in the wild, but perhaps with a short delay.

The sad, biological truth is that Violet is doomed. My scenario is this. In a few weeks (or sooner), bumblefoot will set in. Violet will become sick and sedentary, and will fly off to an obscure building nook or cranny and die without human observation. She'll just disappear, unseen.

With that, a new floater female will fly in and in a week or less take up with Bobby. Pair bonding will occur. A new pair will take up reproduction at the NYU nest.

And once again, the band had absolutely nothing to do with any of Violet's tribulations. It was properly and safely applied, at the right size and right place (the tarsus), five years ago. The injury was a squirrel or rat bite that crushed bone and ripped tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. Healing was never complete. It couldn't have been. Too much tissue damage. She was fortunate to survive as long and as well as she did.

And some will ask how I can know all of this. Well, in the 70s and 80s I did hawk rehabbing and had several foot-injured hawks, caught in animal traps, with crushed toes or foot joints. I was able to save only those where a single toe was crushed, by the toe's amputation. When there was greater damage, the hawk had to stand on the uninjured foot, which in time, usually a few weeks, always had lethal bumblefoot set in. My vet and I tried tetracycline treatments for the bumblefoot infection, but it never works. The bird always dies. Bumblefoot in one-legged hawks is universally fatal.

Violet isn't the first haggard (adult) or immature red-tail to die from injuries caused by prey attempted in capture. Rabbits and jack rabbits can give lethal and skin-tearing kicks. Even rats, if not quickly dispatched, can bite severely. And wings can be broken on limbs or fences when plunging onto fleeing prey. Many red-tails die with broken wings on the ground.

Life for red-tails is not always as calm or tranquil as it can appear in a Manhattan nest cam or through a pair of binoculars there. Sadly, we are witnessing the other side of red-tail life, the inevitable death that eventually frequents them all.
--John Blakeman

As it does for all forms of life, including ourselves. Therefore we must not forget to use the time we have, to watch, to truly see, to revel in the beauty of all life, including our own.

When the time comes for these beautiful, smart, infinitely fascinating creatures, these well loved Red-tailed Hawks who have shared their lives with us, to go before us, we grieve deeply their passing.

Without fail we wonder if we could not have done more to help them, somehow to have eased their last hours, and perhaps to have kept them among us for a little longer.

There isn't a day that goes by that I do not think of sweet Tristan of the Cathedral looking down at me with a "So-there-you-are-where-have-you-been?" expression, or of no nonsense Charlotte, clever Pale Male Jr. training Big and Little to about face in the air, long-lived, wise Hawk-eye, the giant Athena, Riverside Dad building nest after nest, of Houston St. Dad and his son Hous, both we did manage to lay hands on near the end but who left us anyway, and Lola the valkyrien who brilliantly battled intruders with her mate Pale Male but who also diligently and with another kind of courage sat on eggs year after year that never hatched.

And though, in some cases, we may not have been there to "help them" at the end, not showing themselves to us was their choice. Perhaps if they had to go, even perhaps with pain and discomfort, they preferred to pass free in their own land-- with their mate, the trees they had roosted in, a view of the beautiful sky they had flown, and with the wind rippling gently through their feathers.

New updates on Violet and Bobby-report by Roger_Paw:

Violet is eating well and resting - December 25, 2011
Good morning and Merry Christmas. The report from the Horvaths is that Violet ate well last night and was given pain medication and antibiotics. She is resting well.

She was skinny but surprisingly not emaciated so she had been getting some nutrition out in the wild (most likely in the form of small mice she could swallow whole since she had so much trouble holding and tearing into prey as large as rats).

Her good foot is in pretty bad shape in all actuality. It does not have much mobility so it was surprising how well she was able to hold onto perches. She is able to balance on her own though as we've seen in the wild.

She is in a quiet, calm place so she can rest.

Bobby and his new mate(?) - December 25, 2011

Bobby palled around with a new red-tailed hawk friend today in Washington Square Park. All signs indicate the new hawk is Bobby's new mate. They hung around together all day. They flew together, perched together, fought off dive-bombing peregrine falcons together, did a courting talon-lock dance in the sky together, and ended up roosting together in a tree.

If this new partner 'keeps', we'll most likely see new eggs in the spring. Today was full of activity so I will get right to it and start fleshing out this post with all the pics from the day but wanted to bring you this update now.

Thanks to Kris G who sent this to me.

Then you have this article: Violet on the mend!

http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/violet-red-tailed-hawk-washington-square-park-mend-article-1.997069?localLinksEnabled=false (http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/violet-red-tailed-hawk-washington-square-park-mend-article-1.997069?localLinksEnabled=false)

This just in from Kris G!

Make no comparisons with human mating or dating practices or ethics. These are wild red-tailed hawks, with very different biological instincts and behaviors.

Yes, Bobby has “taken up” with a new mate, so very quickly upon Violet’s capture and removal from Washington Square Park (which is best for her, given her declining state). But the appearance and acceptance of the new formel (female) is quite typical, particularly at this time, the very start of the reproductive season.

At Christmas Eve, upon learning of Violet’s “rescue,” I predicted that a new formel would be in the area within a few days; a week at most. I was wrong. It was just a few hours, the very next day. Understand that this was not perfidy, indiscretion, or selfishness on Bobby’s part. It’s pure, natural, and quite perfect red-tailed hawk biology.

So let’s watch what happens. There is now the highest chance that the new pair will fledge three eyasses this summer. In the meantime, hawkwatchers in Washington Square Park should be looking high above, to watch some thrilling courtship flights in the coming weeks. Bobby and the new formel (“Noelle?” – Seems right, since she appeared on Christmas Day.) will loft together into the sky in circling soars. Then, Bobby will soar much higher, with “Noelle” just a few hundred feet above the building tops. From his height several hundred feet above, Bobby will fold his wings and descend in a thrilling, accelerating dive directly at his new mate, soaring below. Just as he’s about to strike the new formel, at over 200 mph, she will instantly tilt sideways and allow Bobby to plunge through her formerly-occupied airspace.

Bobby will instantly open his wings and divert his momentum in a U-shape flight back upwards, bringing him back to the level of the formel. It’s one of the most thrilling avian flights on the planet. Only a few get to see it, and so seldom in cities. New Yorkers in January and February need to be looking above the trees and buildings in search of these red-tail spectacles.

Here’s to a wonderful new breeding season at NYU and Washington Square Park—and to Violet’s peaceful care and passing now in the least stressful conditions. My best regards to the Horvaths, the New York Times, NYU, and all the WSP hawkwatchers who are making all of this possible.

–John Blakeman

Violet could be given a chance to live. A 12 year old peregrine, Zephyr, living wild in South Bend, Indiana
with only one foot, adequately provides for himself and his family.  If Zephyr can kill and feed himself, then Violet should be able to do the same since Violet would be hunting ground prey rather than prey on the wing.
I am so praying Violet's "good" foot can be healed so she can have a chance to live.

We are extremely heart sick to have to announce to everyone that Violet has passed away . She came through the surgery very well . She woke up and was sitting up fluffing her feathers . All of a sudden she had a heart attack . the Vet did CPR on her for 20 minutes to no avail. xrays showed that at some point after her right foot had deteriorated , her left femur was broken . we don't know how she ever survived for as long as she did . We are somewhat relieved that at least Violet wasn't suffering alone somewhere . She was warm, peaceful and had a full belly and pain medication .We just couldn't get her in time .

She seems very used to people.  Our red tail pair at Croton Point Park allow visitors to walk right up to them.  I believe our female is now on eggs, but our guy is out and about trying to catch the very fat rat at the nature center.  We can get up close and personal.

I'm sure DEC has an eye on things and those Washington Square folks are very protective of their hawks.

"Our human instinct is to wish young birds to soar high, as I suppose we project onto birds our dreams of flight and freedom and transcendent perspective. I think this would be especially true in the context of New York City, where inherent dangers lurk low on the pavement. Imagine, then, young red-tailed hawks, noble birds of prey, taking their first steps off a high window ledge. But instead of swooping up to the top of an Art Deco New York skyscraper, as we would fantasize in our big city dreams for them, they end up landing flat on their feathery young backs on a hard New York sidewalk or somehow flopping around on the windshield of a police vehicle or awkwardly landing in a bush or on a park bench during a crowded festival. Watching big young birds negotiate the hustle and bustle of New York for the first time is not for the faint of heart." Teri Tynes

Interesting article by Bruce Yolton...looks like one of the Washington Square juvies may have gotten itself banded. Odd band though...

   I like that band!

Update 8/14/13: Follow up by members of the WSP Hawk watching community has solved part of this riddle.  The band NJ 30 was placed on the bird at Teterboro Airport, Tererboro NJ on July 13th as part of a Bird Air Strike Research project.   Teterboro is the "celebrity airport" for NYC, where many small corporate jets land.  It is about 9 miles away from Washington Square Park.

Although the bird was banded at Teterboro, it was released in Central New Jersey about 60 miles away from the airport.  It may or may not be a Washington Square Park fledgling.  Either way, it's had an adventure very early in life!

Another update

...What remains unclear is if NJ 30 was a Washington Square fledgling.  Many facts support the idea that it was:

The bird returned north rather than continuing south after being relocated
Bobby and Rosie both socialized with the bird
Bobby allowed the bird to take a rat from him last Saturday
The plumage and markings are consistent with past fledgling photographs, although there are no distinct field markings that make it a sure match.

I'll leave it up to the reader to decide if we have enough evidence to declare NJ 30 a Washington Square fledgling and not a vagrant first year hawk passing through the park.  I know I have too much of a bias to make a clear call!
