Title: New Falcon in Town
Post by: Dumpsterkitty on 07-Sep-11, 11:34:40 AM
You sure that's Archer under the pigeon box? Head looks too dark & the malar stripe looks too wide. Could just be the lighting, but still... Edit: Photo taken from Morning watch 9-7-11 (http://rochesterfalconcam.com/falconwatching/?p=2921) report by MAK under FalconWatch.

Well Ei, we do assume it's Archer... but if it's not then YAY Unity has herself a new gentleman caller! ;D

Just looked at it close up also...I don't think that is Archer either. Looks more like Beauty's head! Oh boy, who is that falcon? I compared it to Archer's head, doesn't match.

Perhaps this explains why Archer is downtown so much lately! Another chapter for "As the falcon flies!" :gum:

You're not serious are you? that it could be Mr. T? :o I think they made a movie like this in the 70's...called Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice
..or something like that!

Neither Ei nor Donna think it's Archer. They are very good at comparing photos. Anything is possible Margaret. Oh I wish I had some wheels right now! Well I guess we watchers have a job ahead of us. If we can see B&A downtown at the same time as Unity and another falcon at KP we will be onto something! Oh boy!!! ;D

I'm hoping to look at some more file photos tonight, but just the few I could browse quickly, Archer's malar stripe end is a bit more pointy to me. And the area over the cere looks dark-dark-dark except for what may be a loose feather parked there. Now would be a good time for another tiercel to move in when Archer isn't in high-alert-territorial mode.

Here's a side by side of Mr T and the falcon at KP. Not sure it's him either.

Just got on the computer and saw this. Well, I guess the alert must go out to the Watchers to attempt to get pics of the 2nd Falcon at KP and to report all sightings at both KP and Downtown, especially when you see two. This is the way we figured out that it was Archer visiting both nest sites. Let's hope there is a new Tiercel in town.

I only got one photo the evening of 9/6. For comparison...
Mt. T has a larger malar stripe almost hood like. Mr. C doesn't. I think it is a new visitor.

For comparison (both are 1000x800), here is a photo of Archer under the pigeon box taken on 7/23/11.

The only pic I could find of Mr. T quick yesterday looked like pretty much a full hood, but it wasn't a full profile. Never a dull moment...

Good pictures...MAK, I think these are yours? Good looking falcon! Good size too! It is a male? Without a comparison it's hard to tell, but it is an adult - judging from plumage. Maybe the word is out that Rochester is a cool place to nest, and there are some BEAUTY-ful females, and wild watchers, and who knows, ..could be a reality show in here somewhere! :D
Thank you to all you wild watchers out there! :notworthy:

This will be interesting or it won't! Seems like Mr C is taking after Archer. Beauty or Unity? We don't need a 4 way!! Funny how he found KP and DT. I'll never figure this mess out!

He seems to have a very dark belly and very distinct "bib". I'm feeling some familiarity too, but I don't know from where. I'm wondering about the tiercel that was hanging out in Brighton at the Psych Center...have any watchers been over that way lately? I can't recall the last sighting over there-feels like maybe a couple of years at this point.

I hope it is Zephyr. He had hung out with Beauty at the Psych Center before she hooked up with Archer but Z was too young. And if it is Zephyr, I hope he stays safe and stays

I was thinking M&K offspring as the familiarity piece-Rhea Mae has that distinct belly/bib thing...

Here are a some shots of the mystery falcon that spent quite a bit of time on Xerox SW corner then flew around the buildings and landed on Chase. He was only on chase momentarily. The lighting was poor, but this was the only opportunity to catch his legs.
What do you think...does it look like a silver band on the right leg?

Is there now a fifth falcon in town? Is this new falcon at KP the same one that all the watchers are seeing at Medley Centre or St. Annes? Is the one at Medley Center number five?

I think the St. Ann's/Medley center falcon is a female and Carol just referred to the falcon as a "she". An unbanded female? We are going to need a score card again. Who knew that Rochester would be such a popular PeFa town? As long they all stay safe. Could they be falcons passing through the area and the high-hormone time is over so for right now there are no battles?

They certainly could be early migrators and the pressure isn't on to defend against all comers. You know, we've often wondered over the years why Rochester doesn't have more PeFas. Look at Buffalo...Toronto...Cleveland...can't blink without entering the territory of a different pair. We'd often joke that it was M&K keeping the whole county clear...maybe it wasn't a joke after all.

And true, I have wondered why Buffalo, Toronto have so many nesting sites compared to Rochester. So maybe now ROC is now PeFaTown!
