Title: Bird Counting Weekend Post by: Aafke on 22-Sep-11, 02:31:02 PM :birdhum: :hummer: :finch: :hawk: :falcon: It's always nice to look for birds, that's the reason that I like to organize a Bird Counting Weekend. We did it before and it was fun. You only have to go outside and look for birds, you can also look when you walk to your work or to the shop or when you are in your house you can move a chair to the window and look outside. It's real easy. But be careful when you drive in your car. Write down the birds you see and send them to this topic. I will put all of them in a list and we can see what birds we saw over the whole world. Start counting the birds on Friday (tomorrow) and Saturday and Sunday. I hope it's clear to you and that you will participate. greetings Aafke Title: Re: Bird Counting Weekend Post by: Dumpsterkitty on 22-Sep-11, 03:22:22 PM :birdhum: :hummer: :finch: :hawk: :falcon: It's always nice to look for birds, that's the reason that I like to organize a Bird Counting Weekend. We are cycling the whole weekend,it's going to be fun. Greetings Carla Title: Re: Bird Counting Weekend Post by: Bobbie Ireland on 23-Sep-11, 07:22:16 AM My first birds - swallows swooping around and contemplating whether they should take off for warmer climes. I always find this a sad sight. Yet the swallows maintain their joyous demeanour.
(Aafke, do we post each new bird, or do we count them up for the weekend, and then post?) Title: Re: Bird Counting Weekend Post by: Aafke on 23-Sep-11, 07:33:52 AM Carla, you will have very nice weather!
Bobbie, for the topic it will be nice when you send a post about what you see at this moment. At the end it will be very nice and easy for me when you put all birds in one post. I haven't seen any bird for the whole morning. greetings Aafke Title: Re: Bird Counting Weekend Post by: Bobbie Ireland on 23-Sep-11, 08:11:37 AM Thanks, Aafke. Although there are many birds arriving on our West Coast - apparently the after-effects of hurricanes - things are very quiet in our garden. But I will keep my eyes open and post as soon as something shoots by. You know birds, tho - the minute you start "looking", they hide in the bushes!

Those feeders are a regular Old Country Buffet: cardinals, redwing blackbirds, sparrows of many descriptions, house finches, goldfinches, doves, bluejays, waxwings and even bluebirds sometimes . . . mallards come to eat what falls from the feeders . . . all sorts of stuff. Lots and lots more. not yesterday, though . . . just Mr. Coop. Go figure ;) did see Canada Geese in great numbers all over the place. Heard lots of rain, too! Today I
have heard a couple of really angry blue jays several times, and this morning I heard a cardinal. A drive to the beach would yield lots of seagulls and Canada Geese. They're always there. I'm just not motivated to go see them! And I'm sure a hummingbird has been at the feeder but I haven't been hanging out in the kitchen to see him. A partly white one was hanging around a couple of weeks ago but has moved on. Guess she was just passing through. I think Chickadees typically stick around all winter -- they cache seeds and nuts to get through the winter when there aren't as many insects and caterpillars to eat. There have been some interesting studies about Chickadee brain growth during the caching period... Title: Re: Bird Counting Weekend Post by: Dumpsterkitty on 25-Sep-11, 06:55:13 PM I saw more of the same today...mourning doves, titmice, blue jays, crows.
I did see one string of Canada Geese heading west toward the reservoirs. And a chicken. Also among the domestic birds was a bunch of ...not sure if they're small white geese or large white ducks. The only time I ever see them is on a Sunday morning on my way to work. The farmer in question lets them roam around the front yard then. And I'm always moving too fast when I see them to stop & get a picture. Some of them have light gray wings, the others are all white as far as I can see. I did a quick browse of Cornell & I don't see anything that quite matches. Title: Re: Bird Counting Weekend Post by: ~Ruth on 25-Sep-11, 07:17:18 PM My weekend list:

They're very cool to watch, with their flight patterns and the way two or more groups join together and keep going!

Re: Bird Counting Weekend Well, those P.O.d blue jays were making lots of noise again this morning. I guess some neighbor must have let the cat out! I also heard the neighborhood cardinals talking to each other. Then, after grocery shopping, we were motivated to buzz the beach. The action there included many sea gulls (two of them tried to get hit by our car but failed), Canada geese, an egret and one swan in the distance. Also heard lots of LBJs at the grocery store. Probably house sparrows. This Bird Counting Weekend was fun. Thanks Aafke! Jan in CT Title: Re: Bird Counting Weekend Post by: Aafke on 26-Sep-11, 01:01:49 PM Thanks everybody for sending your birds.

:sparrow: :sparrow: :sparrow: :sparrow: Thanks everybody for sending your lists, next time it would be nice when there will be more lists. I tried to make it as carefully as possible, but I had some problems with the birds like the Sparrows and the House Sparrow, are they the same? There were more. Let me know when you see a mistake. I made this list starting with the bird that is seen the most, by different people and on different days. It’s the number after the bird. The birds with no number were only seen by one person. The winner is the Mourning Dove that is seen by 13 different persons.
