Title: MAK'S surgery
Post by: Donna on 17-Oct-11, 10:56:32 AM
I guess this is an event!

All is well, MAK came through like a trooper. Little bleeding and she handled the anesthesia just fine. In recovery right now and will be in a room around 1ish!  (http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww173/prestonjjrtr/Get%20Well/crutches.gif)

More when I hear!

Kathy O and I visited with Mak this evening.  She is in good spirits and feeling ok considering what she went through this morning. She really enjoyed the wonderful basket of goodies that Kathy brought her, including a pig named Sniffer!

Dinner came while we were there, so we were able to help get things ready for her.  I have to admit that the sliced turkey, mashed potatoes and squash smelled yummy.   :hungry:

So glad that you visited her tonight.  How long will she be in hospital?   It's a good one for joint replacement!
Good name too!

MAK called me tonight, she sounded very groggy, guess she's getting her pain meds regularly. She can't wait to get up, she's been in that one position all day. Tomorrow she goes to Physical Therapy. Yes, Carol, she sure likes her basket full of goodies. She keeps sliding down on the bed and they have to move her up as she can't do it alone. I know the feeling! All in all, she is in good spirits and we had a few laughs. Tomorrow should be better for her. She says HI to all and she misses the Falcons and everyone. If they have WiFi there, (which Hosp usually do), Sue will bring her PC over and she can do her own updates!!  That's it until tomorrow!

Not sure the hospital stay Margaret but she may have to go to PT for a week, which she wants.

(You may just see her riding that bike DT to do her watches)

So wonderful that Mak's surgery is over and that she feels good--it would be
really cool if a peregrine came by her window--it would make her day for sure!
All the best to her! Christiane

So happy to hear MAK is on the road to recovery!  What did she have done to her "foot"?  I guess I have been out of the "loop" on this one!  Well lots of them probably, but I am trying!

You go MAK!  I doubt much will keep you down and away from the computer and the falcons and such.  Keep up the therapy and do what they tell you to do!

She'll be going to PT twice a day while in the hospital-at 9 & 1.  I think you meant to say that she wants to be transferred to Unity's Rehab unit for a week after her hospital stay-which is usually 4-5 days. The "group" there decides whether she gets to go to rehab or not depending on if they feel she needs to have more therapy -that's what she told me.

She had one knee replaced...the other will be done depending on how fast she recovers from this one...

Imagine that Shaky! LOL

Annie, MAK had the 1st of 2 knee replacements. Just talked to her and she is going to PT in about an hour. Sounds much better than yesterday. She's up and sitting in her chair. Drain coming out in a few. She is trying to get into PT for at least one week but her insurance will give her a hard time the nurse said. We'll see what happens. If no Physical Therapy, she will be home by Thurs or Friday. She is watching the birds migrate outside her window.

Just talked to MAK, she's in LALA land, almost fell asleep on the ph. She's been up and about but in pain, not from the surgery but her other leg and her arms. Hope she gets to go to therapy when they release her but that's up to her insurance and they are making a stink...(what else is new!). All tubes are out...YAY! We'll see what tomorrow brings.

She asked about the falcons! I said ??, none at nest today and not sure if Archer is still around. We know Unity is. :)

Hope today MAK is feeling MUCH better!  Hopefully the PT isn't too much for her, but sure it will tired her out.  Hang in there MAK!  This too shall pass, then see if you want to return for more torture!  LOL!  I've been told people really hesitate to do #2 if #1 was rough!  Talking about knees here!!   :silly:

Actually, when I had my first knee done, my husband didn't think he'd ever get me back for the second one because it's a tough rehab. But the wear and tear on the non-operative knee with the first operation made me want to get the second one done which I did 2 months later. It was well worth it having both knees pain free than have one good one and still having pain in the other from the arthritis.

I also would recommend going to rehab although I didn't go after either knee because my husband was home to help me. He took me to PT 3 times a week for several weeks plus I had a CPM machine at home (Dr. ordered) to exercise the knee for several hrs a day. MAK really wants to go to rehab but her insurance might not OK it. Hope she gets to go.

:hello:  Just a quick update and thanks for ALL the well wishes and birthday greeting. I will be rehabbing at the Transitional Care Center room 531 as soon as it becomes available. I've had a setback with some nerve issues but it shouldn't impede my recovery. This is a very busy place and so my computer time is limited. I will get on the forum and fb as often as I can. I don't know how busy it will be at the rehab center but they did tell me I would getting occupational therapy as well as physical therapy. Gotta go for now but want you all to know that I love you and you have brightened my day beyond words!   Keep Smiling!  ;D

She needs to motivate on her own two feet, not race down the halls in a wheelchair!   ;D

Visited with her for a few moments in her new room.  There were four other people visiting, so I didn't stay long.  She seemed in good spirits and the area she's in now is all new.  They've really done a great job there.

Congrats on the new room!  PT here she comes!  Something tells me she may get down (don't we all from time to time) but she won't stay down!  You go MAK!  I am so glad that insurance co. came through.  I would think it would be automatic especially for joint replacements like this.  They say knees are the roughest!  Hang in there MAK!  There are alot of people out here who are keeping "tabs" on you!

Hugs from Indiana!

 Thanks Annie you have inspired me! I have a news update: they discovered that my fever of Friday night was caused by a UTI so I will be going on antibiotics for 7 days to clear that up. The Ulnar nerve in my left arm is giving me some weakness and numbness in my left hand so it's a bit tougher to grip my walker. Tomorrow the regular physical therapy crew will be on duty and I will be starting some intense work on getting rid of that walker I'm sure! I look forward to walking out of this place on my own as soon as I can so that I can go see our Rochester falcons once again!  Keep smiling everyone!

:hello:  Donna told me I should write an update since some peeps were asking her about me. I was discharged from the rehab center last Friday. I continue to rehab on my own at home with home health care coming twice a week. A nurse and physical therapist check on me and both are happy with my progress and think I should be released soon from their care so I can finally get out of the house and maybe go falcon watching. There have been some bumps in the road...I developed a UTI while in the hospital and the ulnar nerve in my left arm became compressed and so half my left hand is numb and tingly,I developed hives for over a week from the pain meds I was on, they switched the pain meds this past weekend and I had a bad reaction from those on Halloween night so now I am on just plain Tylenol. Phew!!! I'm glad the knee hasn't given me too much trouble. I am still using a walker but I feel and so does my therapist that I should be ready to go with just a cane real soon! I look forward to the day when I can leave the house, have some fun  and SMILE!!!  ;D

MAK!  I am so sorry I haven't checked on you til now!  We arrived in Florida and have been moving ever since!  Yesterday I told myself to take a few seconds and check on your progress, well that didn't happen, :paperbag:
But so happy to hear you are home and doing better!  My cousin had BOTH knees done at one time this summer and she too had problems with UTI and not sure what that is but she had blood clots and rough recovery!  The reactions to the  pain meds are not good, but glad you are off them now.  Keep up the GREAT work, it is long and hard but it will be well worth it!  Maybe you really didn't have a bad reaction to the pain meds on Halloween, it was just the trick of the night?   >:D  :hysterical:

Talked to MAK before her therapy session. This surgery was more involved and her recovery will be a bit longer. She has staples instead of sutures, (as she was rejecting the sutures the first time). If I know the MAK-ster, she will make sure she heals quick and will do what it takes to get back on the falcon watching track!! Good luck girl.

 Hi everyone! Thanks for the kind words. I came out of anesthesia much more alert than the last time and thought ok this a good omen. Unfortunately my pain is much more intense this time around. My surgeon visited me this morning and explained that this knee was in really bad shape compared to the other one. There was a whole lot more bone spurs to remove, more inflammation and arthritis and he said the alignment was totally out of whack. Therefore the surgery was more involved having to do a lot of sculpting of the bone to straighten my leg. As Donna told you I have staples this time as my body rejected the internal sutures the last time so there will be more drainage and also the drainage tube came out after the incision was closed so I will not regenerate my own blood in case I need a transfusion like the last time. He also told me the recovery time will be longer because of these factors. So I guess I'll have to be that much more determined. With support from all of you that should not be a problem. Thanks again and keep smiling!   ;D

 What a difference a day makes! Day 2 after surgery has been a whole lot better than yesterday. Less pain and I'm moving better. I even did 3 stairs today. My therapists think I'm doing well enough to go home from the hospital. They're afraid that if I go to rehab the insurance company won't pay for it and I'll get stuck with a huge bill. I can't afford to take that chance so either tomorrow or Friday I will be heading home. Thanks for all your love and encouragement.  ;D

I think this shows that MAK is a pro (she just did all of the "stuff").  Home is always better for healing AND if she doesn't behave  , it is easier for her friends to "help" her!

Great news, MAK!  Let's get that healing started!

Actually I will be using the walker in the house again. The crutches are easier than the cane on my weak arms(from nerve damage in my neck) for doing stairs. Using the cane I was a bit shaky and unstable. This way I can shift my weight to my armpits with crutches for going in and out of the house.  ;D

Update on MAK via Joyce:

"Between the time her brother left and I arrived, she had an episode of heart racing and dizziness. She was up at the time. Since then she had to lay down, ate and is in her recliner. MAK'S BP is low and heart rate is up. 2nd reading is slightly better. Staying for a while to keep her company and check her vitals. She's in some pain and very tired."

On ph with her now, she sounds good and Joyce is still with her. 9:20 pm  114/57 right now....oh boy!!

Earlier her BP was 98/47  :o

I told MAK last night, when I call and you don't answer, I'll post a 911 on the forum!! Well I called her this am and no answer!!! I panicked a bit then she texted me she will call me in a few! PHEW!! This girl has so many alarms set, like 6 of them. One for her pain pill, another for her injection that she gives herself, no wonder she can't sleep, all them alarms going off at different times. She was up at six, (Joyce tucked her in at 11pm), then left. Thank you Joyce for taking care of MAK last night. She did her exercises at 6, then fell back to sleep for a while, got up, washed her hair, (now that was a feat)!! Way to go MAK, ate some breakfast, went to her recliner, fell asleep for a while. Brian called her, then me. Now she waits for the nurse to come check her. Not easy when your on your own but ya know what....she's TOUGH!!! Her friend Tesa may come over today and help out with lunch and stuff, good!! Other than that, if I forgot anything, she will correct me and be on at some point! I'm sure her pain is awful and she is weak, she will bounce back soon!! GO MAK!!!

Wow am I exhausted! I was a week stronger the last go around before I came home. The home nurse was here for 2 and a half hours today wearing me out so I slept the rest of the afternoon away. This is the first time I've even been on the puter since I got home yesterday. Sleeping a lot!!! My blood pressure was 113/61 and pulse 89 when she checked it so that is improving. I have a blister on the side of my knee that I have to keep an eye on and the sight where the staple pulled away is still draining so I have to change my dressing twice a day and keep an eye on that to make sure it doesn't become infected. My incision is swollen today probably from the salt in the chinese food Joycie brought for dinner last nite so I gotta be more mindful of my sodium intake. The nurse thinks I'm moving around pretty good at this point. Soooo if there are any new things to report I'll give you an update. Thanks to all for your support, it means the world to me!  ;D

:hello: This morning the home physical therapist came to evaluate me. She is concerned about how swollen and hard my thigh is as this will prevent full range of motion. It certainly is as when I got measured in the hospital I could bend it to 75 degrees and this morning only 65!  :( So my goal is to take it easy, keep it iced and well elevated so we can get that swelling down. She has recommended PT 5 times a week until this clears up. I had a restless sleep last nite having a hard time getting comfy. Still bleeding from the incision site where the staple worked it's way loose. This is slowing my recovery down even more as my surgeon said it was going to be a longer recovery this time around because of the extensive work he had to do. Don't worry I am a very patient person and I do as the medical people tell me to do so I will NOT overdo it. I must thank my falcon friends that have come to visit me in the hospital and since I came home including Joyce,CarolP,KathyO,Jeanne and SusanC. And those who have kept tabs on me either by phone,fb and this forum. You know who you are! There's too many to list and I don't want to forget anyone so I won't. Kinda hard to when all you do is take pain pills and lay with your leg above your heart all day long! Sat at the table for lunch today and a grapefruit bulged out the side of my thigh so back to my recliner I went. PT came yesterday and took a couple exercises out of my regimen and told me to baby the knee. Home care nurse called today and said she got an order from my doc to take the staples out on Friday. I see my surgeon next Tuesday the 7th. Hopefully things with my thigh will start calming down soon. That's all folks!!!  :gum:

Grunt!

;D I did a little grunting today when the nurse took out the staples in my knee! A little ouchie but not too bad. She put some strips on the entire incision and 2 gauze pads over the area that's still draining. I'll have to clean and change the dressing once a day until it stops draining and the strips fall off. My thigh continues to be a problem. My doc must have really messed around in there for it remains swollen and very painful but better than it was. I am getting around better on it and I figure I'm about 10 days behind the last knee at this point! :phew:

 Saw my surgeon on Tuesday and he gave the ok to step up the pace on my exercises since the thigh swelling had decreased. He explained that the hardness in my thigh was caused when blood from the surgery pooled there after the drain fell out. I wouldn't have had that issue if I'd had a drain. I'm not able to bend the knee too well BUT I am walking very well for which my therapist is quite pleased! I walked down to the corner of my street twice this afternoon(trying to take advantage of no snow or ice). I saw my home care nurse today and she released me from care and though I still have a physical therapist coming to see me I will now be able to leave the house for more than just doctor appointments. Sooo hopefully I can get out soon to see Beauty and Unity! YIPEE! MAK is on the loose!  ;D

Well, both my therapist and I were concerned about how hard it was to get my newest knee bending. Just the beginning of last week it measured at only 62 degrees. After having to basically sit on my butt and elevate it my first week home because of swelling and blood pooling in my thigh (and let scar tissue take over). I'm happy to say I have made a break through this week working through the pain and stiffness to do my exercises I was able to bend my knee to 90 degrees today! My therapist and I breathed a collective sigh of relief and fist bumped each other. Anything past 90 is a bonus! Thank you Lord. Amen! :)

Happy for you, MAK! I was concerned about you not exercising and bending the knee as much as you should postoperatively because of your problems but 90 is good! Keep up the good work!

Congratulations, MAK!  That is good news.  That's what I call togetherness...you and Beauty doing "rehab" together!  Will you be able to fly after your rehab?
