Marin animal care workers are warning about the dangers of sticky Halloween decorations after an owl was found caught in an artificial spider web in San Rafael.

The quarter-pound western screech owl was found alive by a resident caught in the strands of a fake greenish-white web strung from a tree in a yard on Riviera Drive in East San Rafael, said Carrie Harrington, a spokeswoman for the Marin Humane Society.



A humane society officer transported the owl to WildCare in San Rafael, she said. "It could have been worse if we weren't called out," she said. "We were able to respond quickly."

The owl appeared to have been stuck in the web for several hours  (http://www.marinij.com/marinnews/ci_19217711)and was dehydrated, but was in otherwise good condition, Piazza said. WildCare treated the owl with intravenous fluids and plan to release it in the same yard where it was found. The family there has removed the fake spider web material.

Talking parrot woke owner with news of premature puppies
A talking pet parrot has been hailed a hero for saving the lives of five premature puppies. Mimicking his owner Suzanna Bolton’s voice, 18-year-old African Grey parrot Sam squawked a distress call in her ear after going upstairs and jumping onto her bed in the dead of the night. Sam woke Suzanna with calls to ‘come on, come on’ before leading her to the pups. Mrs Bolton’s four-year-old Pomeranian bitch Sally had gone into labour a week early and both she and her puppies were in distress on a cold and wet kitchen floor.

Mrs Bolton, 55, of Anchor Avenue, Darwen, said: “Sam is allowed to roam around out of his cage, but parrots are not known to move at night. That night he seemed to know what was going on and came looking for me to help. He’s never been in my bedroom before in the eight years I’ve had him, but he came up the stairs, climbed on the bed and started talking to me in my own voice with the words “come on, come on”, which I often say to Sally.

“I wondered what on earth was going on and took Sam back downstairs to his perch, but then he looked at me and squawked. It was then I looked in the kitchen and saw the puppies. One had died and the other five boys were all very, very cold and wet. I quickly got the heat pads out for them and got them next to a radiator, and luckily they’re now doing well. I honestly believe that if Sam hadn’t have acted how he did, then the others could have died too during the night.”

Mrs Bolton bought Sam from an Urdu speaker when he was 10 years old and he knew no English. Now he is able to accurately mimick several members of Mrs Bolton’s family. She added: “He’s really very intelligent and everyone says how amazing it is that he’s managed to save the puppies.” Mrs Bolton hopes to give the puppies to new homes once they are old enough.

Two brave mice set up home in owl's nest
Two brave mice are creating a stir after setting up home in an owls' nest. The wood mice moved into the Barn Owl Tower, which was specially constructed for the nocturnal birds at the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall. And their antics are being captured thanks to a "Mouse Cam" set up to watch them.

The gardens' managing director, Peter Stafford, said: "For the autumn our team have moved the cameras underground to show life for a mouse. It's perhaps not the wisest place for the creatures to make their home but it makes for fascinating viewing."

Fortunately for the mice - a major food source for the birds of prey - there are currently no barn owls in residence, though earlier this year the webcam followed the latest brood courting and raising their young.

Heligan Wild is situated in a hide in the middle of the estate near St Austell, designed to give visitors close and intimate views of the wildlife, either immediately outside or through a selection of remote cameras placed around the site.

Cat cafés are huge in Japan right now. As the name suggests, these are coffee shops where cat lovers go to sip overpriced lattes and hang out with an adorable smoosh pile of kitties. In the past five years, exactly 79 such cafés have popped up all over Japan. What’s weird is that the café cats aren’t expensive pedigreed felines like Persians or those other ones with the funny bendy ears, they’re just the everyday mixed breeds you might find in the back lot of your local supermarket, cats who, in the immortal words of Brian Setzer, “slink down the alley, looking for a fight/Howling to the moonlight on a hot summer night.”

Police officer carries dazed deer to safety
A Sheriff's deputy in Michigan, United States, resorts to carrying a confused deer out of the path of traffic after it refused to move from the middle of the road following a near miss with a car.

Deputy Ryan Swartz of the Huron County Sheriff's Office was responding to a car accident on Friday when he discovered the doe deer standing dazed in the road. His attempts to encourage the deer to move were captured on this patrol car camera.

Desperate to get the deer out of the path of oncoming traffic, the deputy then picked it up and carried it to the embankment where it recovered its senses and ran off. Despite the successful outcome, Sheriff Kelly Hanson warned that his deputy's actions were "not recommended".

A two-week-old ant-eating aardvark has been unveiled at Antwerp zoo in Belgium. Little Nuru, which means 'light' in Swahili, is only the tenth baby aardvark born in the zoo in more than 50 years. Xavier Beghin, a spokesperson for the zoo said it was difficult to get aardvarks to breed.

Aardvark mothers can be rather nonchalant with their offspring and not very loving, he added. At night, accidents happen with mothers knocking their babies with their powerful feet. The mothers also often do not produce enough milk so their young struggle to put on weight.
It was the baby aardvark's mother Curly's fourth attempt to give birth. Her first three babies did not survive. The spokesman said she may have learnt her lessons, adding Curly had become very protective towards little Nuru since the baby was born on January 6.

During the first two weeks of her life, she was kept under 24-hour surveillance. Mr Beghin said that it was too early to see if baby Nuru is a boy or a girl. 2) The dormouse spends up to one-third of its life in hibernation, and typically begin that winter "sleep" when the first frost hits, and their food sources are gone.

3) They loose about a quarter of their body weight during hibernation.

4) The word "dormouse" comes from the Anglo-Norman dormeus, which means "sleepy (one)"

This Dachshund is fostering this little guy for another mom who couldn’t take care of him. He is just a little bigger than her other pups.

Customers can stroke and interact with the cafe's five feline hosts, named Sonja, Thomas, Moritz, Luca and Momo, who all came from an animal shelter and now freely roam about the cafe and take naps. The cafe was opened by Vienna resident Takako Ishimitsu, a 47-year-old woman originally from Nagoya, Japan, who moved to Vienna some 20 years ago. She had to spend three years negotiating with city officials over hygiene issues for the cafe to be allowed to open.

Ishimitsu said she decided to open a cat cafe in order to introduce some aspects of Japanese culture to Vienna. "Showing unknown Japanese concepts is good for Austria. I had various ideas, and the cat cafe project was the least difficult to realize. And at the same time, I can do something good for the Vienna animal shelter which I have been supporting for years," cafe owner Takako Ishimitsu said.

She added that the 50-seat cafe has been an instant hit with locals and tourists alike. "Surprisingly, more than 99 per cent the reactions are positive. One of our goals is to provide some happiness to people who cannot have cats on their own, because of their jobs or family members suffering from allergies," Ishimitsu said.

Henry Vilas Zoo's white handed gibbons found a squirrel nest in their exhibit and adopted one of the babies! Richie and his mate Moe carried the baby around for 2 days, never letting it out of their sight! Zoo staff was finally able to relocate all the babies to a local wildlife rehabilitation facility.

A stray dog has completed a 1700km journey across China after joining a cycle race from Sichuan province to Tibet.

The dog, nicknamed "Xiaosa", joined the cyclists after one of them gave him food.

He ran with them for 20 days, covering up to 60km a day, and climbing 12 mountains.

Cyclist Xiao Yong started a blog about Xiaosa's adventures, which had attracted around 40,000 fans by the end of the race.

Yong now hopes to adopt Xiaosa.

The homeless dog, known as Xiao Sa, has been following a team of cyclists for 24 days along 1,700 kilometres of highway from Kangding, Sichuan province, to Lhasa in Tibet. Zhang Heng, 22, a student in Wuhan, Hubei province decided to face the challenge of riding to Lhasa alone. On the way he met a lonely dog.

"She was lying, tired, on the street around Yajiang, Sichuan province," he said. "So we fed her, and then she followed our team." They thought she was following for fun, but found she insisted on sticking around them day and night. "We felt she might want to come along with us, so we decided to bring her along to the end. We thought the dog was encouraging us," he said.

They created the name Xiao Sa by combining xiao meaning "little" with the last syllable of Lhasa. During their journey, Xiao Sa, Zhang and his team covered more than 1,700 kilometres and climbed 10 mountains higher than 4,000 meters. Xiao Sa just ran up the mountains or along dirt roads. "Many people stopped cycling in some sections, then took the bus, but the dog made it," he said.


Zhang put the dog on the back of the bike when the team was riding downhill. "The speed can reach 70 kilometres per hour, impossible for the dog to catch us." Zhang Heng, who accompanied Xiao Sa for 20 days, called her "a buddy and a friend". "I would like to take the dog home and take care of her. She has been a stray on the road for a long time. She needs a home."

Monorail passengers at DisneyWorld had a 45 minute ride between stops because a squirrel got on the track and the woman driving couldn't bring herself to run it over. They made progress a few feet at a time, honking at the squirrel to continue further down the track.

And the squirrel was being chased by a bird! LOL  I would have done the same thing......waited!

A family in Arlington, Virginia, had their chimney capped, unaware that a raccoon and her babies lived there. The United States Humane Society came and removed the raccoon and two babies and set them free outside. But there were actually four in the litter, which wasn't evident until the next day. The last two babies were removed and put in a "reunion box" and left for the mother to find. The best part of this story is the camera trap footage of what happened when the reunion box was left out overnight.

Eating food from a dish looks to be old hat for this cat who’s fed treats with chopsticks. In reality, the method actually keeps kittens from biting or scratching for treats during training. The chopsticks allow the human to help their cat learn patience while honing muscles and balance.

A seal pup has been rescued after being spotted in a busy lorry park at a ferry terminal in south west Scotland. Workers at the Cairnryan port spotted the six-week-old earlier this month. Despite their best efforts to encourage it back into the water the pup refused to go and so the Scottish SPCA was called in. One ferry worker tried to put the animal in the boot of his car to keep it safe - but it broke out and was found on the dashboard.



The pup - which has been named Smartie - was recovered by Scottish SPCA animal rescue officer Alistair Hill. He said the weather in the area had been "particularly bad" at the time with strong winds and stormy seas. "The seal pup had made its way into the lorry park via a steep, man-made banking," he said. "It would have taken a lot of effort for him to get up there and he had no intention of returning to the choppy waters.

"Normally we'd ask people to leave seals alone until we arrive but there was a risk he could have been injured in the busy lorry park so a member of staff put him in their car until I got there." However, the seal managed to escape from the boot by pushing down one of the rear seats and wriggling up onto the dashboard. "He is clearly a very smart seal as he ended up watching the storm out the windscreen of the car from his warm, dry spot on the dash," said Mr Hill.



The seal is recovering from his adventure at the Scottish SPCA's National Wildlife Rescue Centre near Alloa. Centre manager Colin Seddon said: "Smartie was weak and dehydrated when he first arrived but he's now doing really well in our care and already feeding himself. I think they are burrowing owls. They take over burrows made by other critters, like ground squirrels. They are very tiny, too.

My dog I had when I was a child, a poodle, used to do that as a last resort, when no one in the house would play ball with her.  She'd always beat the ball down the full flight of stairs and catch it on its last bounce, then up she'd go again.

Orphaned fawns are prevented from seeing human faces and forms during their time in the rehabilitation setting. In keeping with that policy, this video was filmed from behind a camouflage blind in the woods, by a volunteer.
