Boy, Donna! You get them first even when they are in my own back-yard!!! :paperbag:
Gotta check out these babies! I usually get calls from the twitching fraternity... their phones must need charging... (Is it something I said???)

"Mystery bird" is kinda godwit-ish... but what do I know?!
Glossy Ibis at Portmarnock? Just north of Dublin... autumn migration has begun... tho what these Mediterranean birds are doing here now, I do not know. (I do not know much...) Had not heard of their presence til Donna told me!

Imagine that, a peregrine falcon sitting on a rock. Our Rochester falcons don't do rocks! My best guess on the mystery bird is some sort of sandpiper. It would help to see the feet. Course I don't know much about shorebirds. :stupid: :good post:

Der, I forgot to answer....it's a Spotted Redshank. Look at all the bands on this guy! Who is he? Easy one, even though I didn't know! These are in Ireland Bobbie! another "who am I?"

Oh, we do rocks. They're a very important part of the Rochester Falcon territory. Beauty bathing on river rocks. Pride (and lots of other young fledglings) on Pride's rock. Mariah and Kaver on the rock wall of the gorge. and then there's Orville!, a rock among rocks!

[/quote] The one with the bling could be a Spoonbill... the other, the BoP, could be a Sparrowhawk - I think... but then... there's that word "duffer" again! (Sure do wish I could figure out Facebook... the things I must be missing... like who the niece is dating... what the nephew got up to at the weekend... that sorta stuff...)

OK, guys, stop it! I got a busy day going around here, so not lots of play-time...
That is probably not a Sparrowhawk... eye looks ok, but not the tail. And if it were a Sparrowhawk, why would somebody post its pic, as it is not rare.
And Donna, lissen here to me! Just because they are in my neighbourhood does not mean we are acquainted! :paperbag:
Here's a story along these lines... In my eagerness in my early years of birding, I used to go out with the Big Boys... kinda accepted, as I was vaguely amusing - but still viewed with suspicion and a bit of annoyance. One of the kinder members of the Twitcher Brotherhood, however, was very patient, and when I said "Oh! LOOK! Out there! Near the tide line!", he obligingly raised his bins and had a careful look. Lowering them, he looked at me as I gazed back in excitement... what had I found?! "Uhhhh, Bobbie..." (I hung on every word!) "Uhhhh... Love... It's a plastic bag."
I rest my case.

Bobbie, on the Ireland Bird facebook page, this one guy always puts up a pic and writes, "who am I" and has other people guess.
Yes, he wrote that was a Sparrowhawk, a female. I have no clue, so I go along with the answers, figured they know more than me.
Spoonbill is correct, a Duff you are not. But why so many bands?
Plastic bag!! :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical:

You mean I was right? Eeeeee-haaaaa!
Donna, what's the fellow's name who puts the pix up on FB? Might know him. Keep those pix coming... I'll take a stab at most anything... I ain't proud!
Why so many bands? I am only guessing, mind you - the BTO operates the ringing (banding) scheme in Ireland and Britain. It is also associated with other European schemes (tho the BTO is usually the main arbiter/operator). The Spoonbill would have been ringed somewhere in southern Europe at its birth site, and the rings would ID (perhaps) location, a particular ringing scheme, a unique bird ID, of course... and the list continues. I could ask one of ringing buddies, tho... in case the preceding is mere twaddle...
Yup. Plastic bag.

Here's an RSPB link, MAK. When they say "the size of a robin", they are talking about the European Robin... you can click to find this one on the link too... http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/s/stonechat/index.aspx

Saw my first (and only?) Phalarope there. A superb place during migration seasons. I am heading towards a Lark sp here. - we'll see! My own Rules for Identification: I have seen many birds in my ancient life - HOWEVER! I do not add them to any sort of real "list" til I can ID them myself. I have, for example, been "shown" a Bonelli's Eagle... looked like a flying postage stamp to me... So I have seen one... but can I ID one? Uhhhh... nope! (Spell check for "Phalarope" = "Flareup")

I have, for example, been "shown" a Bonelli's Eagle... looked like a flying postage stamp to me... So I have seen one... but can I ID one? Uhhhh... nope!
I am slightly more lax with my rules for listing. My rule is that I have to have a nice satisfying look to really feel like I've "seen" the bird, can appreciate the bird. It would be the sort of look that would allow me to identify it, if I knew more. For example, if I'm on a birding tour and my guide points out an Elegant Trogon, a bird I'm not familiar with, and I get a nice, luxurious look at this bird which makes my eyes pop out of my head, with nice definitive identifying colors, shapes, and markings visible, I'm definitely going to list it. Could I identify it again? Probably, but I'm not going to wait to see the bird again to test myself before I'll list it. But I agree with you, if I see a flying postage stamp or only get brief glimpses of an unidentifiable bird, no matter how much I'd like to add a bird to my life list, I don't. Patti

Yes, I say hoopoe also! Awwww, rats! I missed the Hoopoe ID contest! Yes, these glories do turn up in Ireland, and I have seen them in Wexford. First saw them in Majorca - they look like big pink butterflies in flight. Also saw a Hoopoe's nest, and believe me, for all their elegant appearance, they sure have poor house-keeping habits! (Missed the Reed Bunting too... I was headed towards a bunting sp. but never did get any further... Bring 'em on, Donna!)

And even the Big Guys can - and do - get them wrong. Two warblers here the Willow Warbler and the Chiffchaff. Now, Mister Chiffchaff is easy when he is sitting there in plain sight going "chiff-chaff-chif-chif-chaff". But if he is just hopping about in the branches and doesn't say a word, he is usually ID'd as a Willow-Chiff. So I say Hooray for critters like the Hoopoe!

Looking at that big tummy makes me wonder about a goose sp... but what's it doing in that habitat? Could just be a pond on a windy day, of course... (and really, Bobbie... geese do migrate, so who knows where you might see them!)

Ok. I am going to make a "derriere" of myself and say Barnacle Goose. (Tho it could be a Canada Goose... or Brent Goose... or indeed any black and white goose.) The fact that it is dabbling and not diving is my only clue, apart from the colour... and the fact that the front could just as easily be the back... had to figure which way the feathers were going and am not sure I have that. There. Still... fun!

Today's Who Am I? The answer is Common Snipe. A Jack Snipe would show a dark crescent under the eye and streaking not barring along the flanks. (Not that I would know this but that's what the guy said in Ireland). :2funny: Annette is the winner! but you all knew it was a Snipe. Yay, Annette! (Doesn't everyone know about that dark crescent under the eye? I have often heard people talking about it...)

Useless fact for the day:- Did you know that the word 'Plover' is derived from the Latin 'Pluvia' meaning rain, presumably because their migration corresponds with the arrival of seasonal rains. Now you know.

The optimum depth of birdbath water, says the Audubon Society of America, is 2 and a half inches. Less water makes it difficult for birds to take a bath; more makes them afraid.

Yes I understand, it's funny that the babies have such a short bill, but it's longer than most water/shorebirds so it has to be a avocet or a curlew. And I was sure it was no Avocet. That's very fair of you Bobby not to sent the name after you saw the picture! greetings Aafke
